It costs 3 euros and is on the Lyon city card. I would not go out if your way to visit. We were in Croix-Rousse anyway and followed Google map directions to get here.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 10, 2024
- Lode14 contributionsGood museum, but take a guided tourGreat museum, not only if you are into fabrics and textiles but also to get a general view on what made Lyon so rich in the 19th century. It is very small but all the relevant machinery is present. However, if I'd ever come back, I would opt for a guided tour because now, we lacked a little visualization with the machines. - Lee APhiladelphia, Pennsylvania682 contributionsWe ended up visiting 3 silk sites (didn't have time to do the 4th) and the best one was Maison des Canuts. When we were considering visiting Lyon we never even knew about the "silk tour." And after we did know, we didn't jump at the chance to do any of the sites. However, we ended up doing 3 of them (didn't have time to do the 4th) and loved it. The best one was Maison des Canuts. Our guide, Maria, was fantastic and gave us a really interesting demonstration of the silk loom.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024

This is a small museum with an option for an extra cost demonstration of weaving on an old Jacquard loom. The museum is interesting, the explanations are in French but they have an English hand out at the front desk. The museum is well done and attractive and if you read everything you will be well informed about weaving and the frequent revolts of the weavers against their selfish capitalist masters. If you opt for the weaving demonstration they will take you across the street to see three traditional looms, one of which will be used by your guide. The explanation will be both in French and English. Then you will watch a presentation on silk, your guide will comment in French only, but be happy to answer your questions in English. The museum and demonstration are included if you have bought the Lyon City Card. This museum is not air conditioned.

Having been to wineries before, we opted for a change and went to Maison des Canuts. Instead of taking a one hour bus ride to a Beaujelais winery, it was a short ride to the top of “Working Hill” in Lyon for an instructive and illuminating hour-plus experience with a delightful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic young woman from Brazil. She was wonderful! I had read some about silk manufacture and weaving, and we had traveled to China and toured a silk “museum” and manufacturing outlet, so knew about the growth and nurturing of silk “worms” (caterpillars) and the harvesting of silk from the cocoons. But as much as I had read or heard about weaving I never truly understood how weaving with punchcards worked…until visiting Lyon. Our docent at Maison des Canuts spoke French, Italian, English, and of course Portuguese and Spanish. Just as impressive, she was fluent in the language, function, use, and history of weaving and thus imparted her knowledge verbally and by example at the loom itself. She answered questions and demonstrated how to correct errors or accidents and how to fix broken threads. Seems detailed, and it was. But by her clear explanation and demonstrations, all was crystal clear, including the function of the punch cards…. a forerunner of the computer. Also of great interest was the history and details of the lives of the workers and their families. All in all, 5 stars, fun and enjoyable and illuminating.

A small museum but interesting to see how silk was made in the 18 & 19 century by the 'canuts' especially with living in a similar place in UK where lace was produced. The process was similar. Lovely to see the old looms and learn about Jacquard. The signage was all in French but a handbook was provided in English. Tie the visit in with a walk round the Croix Rousse area - it has great shops/cafes.

Magnificent guided tour. The museum is small so the visit is obligatory. An hour with Alix is a real joy. She answers all your questions with relevance and her passion is contagious. The group was very heterogeneous and she knew how to captivate young and old!

Very interesting visit. The weaving demonstration on an old jacquard loom is a rare and astonishing experience. Our guide is a passionate young woman and we really appreciated her explanations. This little museum is worth the detour. We learn a lot of things there, both about silkworm breeding and the history of canuts and the silk industry.

The simply furnished museum is a real gem for anyone who is passionate about the history of textiles. Visitors can learn about the production process of gold yarn, for example. The textile industry has contributed significantly to Lyon's economic recovery and prosperity. It is very worth watching the entire video - really fascinating.

This was the worst visit we have had in many years traveling all over the world. It is only two rooms. The local silk shops in Lyon are better museums than this. Plus, a group of school children came in to use the one toilet. Paying visitors, us, were left stranded. We left and found a hospitable bar down the street: used the facilities and had a nice coffee. Do not go to Mason des Canuts

the guided tour is unmissable, with lots of humor. We learn a lot from antiquity to the present day! a little cold... I'm talking about the temperature. The only criticism is that
Just bring a little wool... real stuff to please our guide.

Can you tell me how far the museum is from where Avalon docks their ships? Could I walk or would I need to take a cab? We will be in Lyon May 5th and your museum is at the top of my list of things to see.
Thank you
