a must visit
Sep 2020
excellent presented museum of Roman artifacts, some of the best restored mosaic floors we have seen anywhere, remains of an iron age chariot & the tablet of Claudius. Well arranged across 5 floors, with great views of the odeon from the large windows. We took the hop-on hop-off tourist bus to the top of the hill & walked down the 1,000 or so steps to the old town (takes a good 10-15mins to walk down)

Very nice Roman site
Aug 2020
The visit starts with a museum. The building by itself is brutalist and very nice. The expo itself is very nice and gives an impression in Roman live and the early history of the city of Lyon.
The best are the two amphitheaters outside... a must visit when in Lyon.
TIP: there is an audioguide that you can download on your smartphone.

Nice Museum
Aug 2019
A nice museum with some wonderful collections of Roman, Gallic, Celtic and other artifacts. It is very close to the ancient Roman theatre on Fourviere Hill, so you are bound to see it when you visit the Hill. It is quite good and merits a visit.

Very basic, not as impressive as I expect
Nov 2019
This place is very close to the train stop, however this place is not that impressive as I expected.
To enjoy it, just enough to go from the upper section of the hill and enjoy 15 mins there to take some pictures.

Do this first to fully appreciate amphitheater
Mar 2020
Museum gives an excellent overview of the history of Lyon and the amphitheater. The building itself is unique because it has been tucked into the hillside so visually it does not interfere with the amphitheater.

Gallo-Roman Museum
Mar 2020
Over several floors there's a large collection of Roman antiquities including large Mosaics. Good to visit this museum on the way down form the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere and take in the amphitheatre.

Highly recommend
Jan 2020
Would highly recommend. Offers good value for the 4euro entry fee (free with the Lyon City Card). The building itself is discreetly built in to the side of the hill, with two large picture windows at lower levels, offering great views of the amphitheatre. The exhibition is well laid out and the accompanying audio guide (free) provides interesting and informative background to both the items on display and Lyon’s place in the wider Roman Empire. You can visit the amphitheatre for free.

Beautiful floor mosaics
Dec 2019
While I had a bad experience in the Theatres Romains de Fourviere, we really enjoyed the Gall-Roman Museum. Because they were in between special exhibitions, we got in for half-price. I'm continually amazed by tile mosaics from thousands of years ago--who has that patience! This museum has a TON of mosaics. Really interesting space.

Interesting day trip for couple of hours

I would recommend a trip to this museum, funky design almost into the cliff with a wealth of interesting exhibits. You can also scroll through the actual ruins too and the hop on hop off bus stops there.

Fascinating archaeological site and museum
Nov 2019
I really enjoyed this archaeological site and museum - it was rich with the history of Lyon during Roman times. The Theater site is remarkable - so large and well preserved. Beautiful views from the hilltop as well. The museum has lovely examples of public tablets, mosaic floors, glass, and other artifacts of daily life at the time. I would recommend taking the funicular all the way to the top and walking down but it's certainly a good workout to walk up the steep hill either from the bottom or from the first stop on the funicular - not a bad idea if you're up for it! We did not use it but they had two areas for children to play while learning about Roman Lyon which looked fun and informative. A bit of dress up, climbing, and hands on activities for restless kids.
