As an American, we were geographically removed from WWII. History is so much more alive and memorable when visiting museums that preserve and explain events as well as this museum does. Although the English audio guide wasn't available, the museum provided an excellent notebook with English translation of each exhibit. I actually appreciated the fact that the exhibits were in French because for me it emphasized that the Resistance in Lyon was a French experience. The 45 minute movie of excerpts of Klaus Barbie's trial was powerful and informative.

Seems really to have been set up for the French (understandable I guess). There is no English translation of anything anywhere in the museum, which you really need for an international audience. I speak some French and used the English audio guide which was available but still struggled through trying to read the French on a lot of the information boards throughout the museum. So all up I would give it an ok but nothing more, as an experience for a non- French speaking tourist.

As we didn't have our passports we couldn't hire the audio description but instead the museum furnished us with a written guide containing translations of every explainer board in the museum (or so it seemed). Would have taken hours to read the lot properly - but worth while to sit for 10-15 minutes and speed read it. Found the oral testimonies of the resistance members very powerful and perhaps the most important reason to have the museum to preserve this experience of Lyon during the Nazi occupation.
Over all though, found the displays rather flat and not as engaging as, say, the resistance museum in Amsterdam - where they really put you in to the situation.

This museum is la reminder of what Max Ophuls called ''Le chagrin et la pitie'' of war, of occupation. The heights of heroism and the depths of depravity are illustrated in the extensive colletion of text and artefacts.
It really IS worth a visit ! For those who do not speak French, photo ID is required in order to hire the audio guide. This ID may be e.g. a driving licence, pensioners' bus pass, as well as passport.

Very interesting, a 45min documentary on the trial of Klaus Barbie awaits you to see and hear the testimonies of the victims of Barbie's torture. Very moving. The museum is full of information, a must for fans of the WWII period. Small negative point: we did not have an audio guide because "Everything is written in French".

I visited this museum as I always love to visit any arts or history museums. The displays are all in French and some audio and video screen sets were out of orders. Mostly, photo panels with notes are displayed and there are not much objects. Overall, it was very informative and Interesting to learn the past history. If you have no knowledge of French, it is better getting English audio guide set.

We are interested in WWII and particularly what was happening in Lyon. We loved this museum! My one recommendation is to not spend too much time at the very beginning. It gets better as you work your way into the museum. We ran out of time because, not realizing how big the museum was, we spent too much time at the very beginning. The film is fully subtitled and well worth seeing.

Displays in French but we got the 2 hr English audioguide for 1€ well worth it! You need 3 hours or more! ESP if you are interested in WW2 history. There is a temporary (?) exhibit so the price is 8€ & includes a 45min movie on the trial of klaus Barbie which was very good & I think you should not miss! It was in English & when we bought our admission tx the lady informed us of the next showing time. There are free lockers for coats/backpacks. Also 1€ coffee vending machine & snack vending machine. Bathrooms were very modern & clean. Easy access/ transport from Lyon metro.

A museum rich in documents, testimonies and period objects which deserves to be a little more supported. This recalls the first centers of resistance with the underground press. A very moving visit! The bookstore is interesting with the writings of Jean Moulin. Unavoidable!

Found this museum very moving as it documented the French resistance activities in and around Lyon. Everything is in French (of course) but we understood the basics and the pictures of the heroic Resistance members and some of the tactics they used were very interesting. The museum is housed in the building that the Nazi SS used as their HQ in Lyon.

Is this museum suitable for a 10 year old and an 8 year old? For example is there a children's audio guide?
Written July 16, 2017
It all depends on the maturity of the children I think. As for the audio guide I have no idea, but as I mentioned in my review it's some heavy subject matter, mostly dealing alot with the deportation. One of the first exhibits, is a small auditorium where you can watch portions of the Barbie trial, and while subtitled it's extremely graphic in its verbal descriptions of torture. Walking around the museum I didn't see little sort of things for kids to do, or sets designed for them like you would find in other museums to keep them "entertained". So it all depends on the kids and what they think is important. My first reaction is no, unless they really have the understanding of what's going on and the importance of the exhibit at that maturity level. Most kids that age in my opinion just don't, let alone the history and background understanding, but then I wouldn't tell some family not to bring them if they did. My first instinct I would think hopefuly is that if a family was bringing real young kids here, it was to teach them an important lesson. But then other times a kid just has to be a kid.

In what year was the museum founded?

Dear 46nim2016
Sorry, I've only just noticed your question now! I believe the museum was opened in 1992.
