Worth a visit for the views and decoration, even if you're not religious
Even if you are not religious, some of the churches of the world are worth seeing. Perched on the hilltop, its worth coming up the funicular just to have a look at the views out over lyon. Once in the basilica, the decoration itself is extreme compared to many churches and cathedrals and the size is surprising. What's even more surprising is the size of the crypt. That in itself is bigger than a lot of churches. When you look properly at these buildings, you do wonder how on earth they built them and then how did they decorate them so elaborately.

    A must see in Lyon
Whether you brave the climb up, or take the metro, it's well worth a visit. A beautiful cathedral set on top of hill with views over Lyon. For culture lovers, a beautiful cathedral, for those who just want a panorama over Lyon, this place has both. Long walk down back to old town, but well worth it.

    A must in Lyon!
If you visit Lyon, this is for sure one of the places you must visit! What an amazingly beautiful basilica. It became instantly in one of my favorites I've been to! The hill where is located and it's view of the city, the building with its four towers, the decor with the stained glass windows and the murals mosaics wich such details, everything is gorgeous. From there you can walk down to the old lyon center wich is very near.

    Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière
I've visited Fourvière Cathedral many times since I was a child, and I still love the place to this day. Fourvière Cathedral overlooks the city of Lyon and at the night it is illuminated. Fourvière Cathedral constructed in the late 19th century. It's built roughly on the site of Emperor Trajan's ancient Roman forum. There are several options for climbing up to the cathedral. The first way up is by funicular. The funicular starts in the Vieux Lyon district. The people of Lyon are accustomed to calling the funicular "la ficelle". The funicular is an original way to get to the Fourvière Cathedral. For the more courageous, it's possible to walk to the top of the Fourvière hill. Once you've reached the top of the Fourvière hill, you can admire the view over Lyon. You can admire the whole city, the view is incredible. What's more, the interior of the cathedral is amazing. A visit to the cathedral is well worth it, and I'd advise everyone to go there one day!

Well worth the effort to get there.
This is certainly not the most beautiful religious building I have ever visited and it will not be everyone’s cup of tea however the whole experience of getting there, either on foot if you’re fit enough or by funicular if you’re like me, and particularly the stunning views from the church grounds makes it worth the visit. Both times we went up there we took the funicular up and walked back down through the Jardin du Rosaire and the steps into the old town. The basilica itself is worth looking around particularly the mosaics and the crypt. It is nicknamed the upside down elephant which speaks for itself. The history of the basilica and associated folklore is also worth delving into.

Unmissable during your visit to Lyon.
It is not the most beautiful basilica in the world but it is the unmissable monument of Lyon... So here are some tips: 1. To access, avoid the car, walking, the bus but favor the finicular. 2. Before or after visiting the basilica, visit "Vieux Lyon" at the bottom of the hill (funicular departure) 3. Enjoy the panoramic view of the city (outside the basilica). 4. After the basilica visit and the panoramic view, walk 10 minutes to the Roman theater (left road leaving the basilica towards the finucular) and take the finucular to go back down (roman site stop).

    Immortal bastion on a hill
Had first vistas of the stunning edifice from in front of the Cathedral down below. Looked forward with anticipation to a visit. It’s a remarkable construction with architectural features borrowed from Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic. Exteriors and facades are remarkably beautiful, themes that continue within. Fabulous ornate stone craft is everywhere. Much gorgeous statuary potently projects the central message of the faith. One marvellous one shows Our Lady in white atop of a spiralling ziggurat in brick. Undoubtedly an inspiring time.

    Absolutely a must see!
This was an absolutely stunning site! Wow! Catch either the hop on hop off bus to the top to view! A peaceful, cool, beautiful building with so much history. There’s a fantastic hotel right next door with a terrace that looks over the whole of Lyon! Take your fat wallet, a drink is very expensive! If you can’t get to the terrace for a drink, go to the back of the cathedral to see the view!

    Worth the trip
This is one place to visit if you’re in Lyon. The detail in the architecture is incredible. Our kids are 10 & 7 and they could not stop pointing things out and asking how they made things. The view over Lyon is pretty amazing also! Worth the time to visit

    Grand Cathedral
A beautiful cathedral overlooking the city of Lyon. The church is a functioning place of worship so please treat the area with utmost respect. The intricate details on ceilings and walls show how much the people cherish their religion. Downstairs there's a crypt that one can visit. Don't forget to go behind the church to see a beautiful panorama of Lyon. Best way to get here is to take the furnicular.

Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere is a beautiful building. It was built in the late 19th century in the name of the Virgin Mary who is supposed to have saved the city from the bubonic plague that raged throughout Europe in 1643. The church is a wonderful work of art in itself, both inside and out. It stands on Fourviere Hill and can be seen from a considerable distance away. It is worth a visit and you would be really missing out if you left this sight off your itinerary.

I have been to many cathedrals all over the world and this is one of my favourite. Looking at the amazing sculptures and artwork one wonder how talented the artists where in those times. In the modern era we rely so heavily on computer generated images. These artists had no such privilege. If you are looking for a cathedral with unsurpassed beautiful this is the one

This place gives you a view of Lyon from the top. The Basilique is rather small, but it's a warm and quiet place (compared to sacré-cœur for example). There are free translations of Bible in many languages, the priest is really friendly, and the church has a clam atmosphere.

The Basilique has a commanding presence on top of the highest point in Lyon. There are 3 ways to go to the top: funicular, walk up hundreds of steps or take a cab, highly recommend the latter. This church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary in gratitude for the relief from cholera in 1823 and the Prussian forces in 1870. It’s a Byzantine decorated church. We went on a Saturday morning and the church was entirely filled which was heartwarming to see. We were not sure of the occasion.

The history of the Basilique Notre Dame in Lyon is good. Fascinating? No. Good? Yes. My wife and I have travelled throughout most of Europe, and the vast majority of the tours teach the history of the Catholic Church, and the history of the Roman army. OK, I get it. Every town has a beautiful cathedral...and stories of the Roman Army setting up camps and establishing communities to support their needs about 20-25 miles apart...as that is a days worth of marching. I do find the engineering of laying out the Roman aqua ducts thousands of years ago, that are still operational a fantastic achievement! The one really great thing about the Notre Dame Bisilique is its location, high above the city of Lyon on the highest hill. There cannot be a better view of the city of Lyon! It is spectacular and beautiful!

Very easy to get to , the tram station is central when you cross the bridge. Simple to buy tickets , three euros buys you a ticket which you can use for the remainder of the day on buses, trams and local trains. Once you reach Fourviere the basilica is beside the bus or tram stop. Inside the basilica is delightful, the ceiling is a work of art and don’t forget to go downstairs to the crypt which is well worth the detour. Around the outside of the basilica past the couple of shops you can go to the front of the basilica and look down over Lyon, a great sight,

We enjoyed this church. It was lovely and is a must see if going to lyon. The view over the city is awesome. I would also recommend their gift shop if you enjoy religious icons it had a great selection. I would recommend taking an uber from main part of town it was quite the hike for us.

A beautiful church, in its style very much of another era, but very impressive nonetheless. Outside, there is a large open space with spectacular views over the city. Easily accessible via a funicular or by taxi from the city -- cost from Place des Jacobins to the cathedral door 13,5 euro.

Of course if you visit Lyon, you'll hop on the funicular for $2 and take some impressive photos from the view terrace and marvel at the interior. Actually, we like our churches to be evolved over centuries of change and steeped in history. This one is not so much ..

Be sure to take the F2 funicular to the top from the Saint Jean station. The treat is a panoramic wonderful view of the city, overlooking Vieux Lyon (the old town). Entrance to the Basilique is free so be sure to go inside.
