A wine tour in Lyon is an absolute must! We booked with Rhone Trip for a morning visit to the vineyards. We were in an intimate group of 4 for our half day trip on Saturday morning starting at 9am. Julie collected us from Place Bellacour (very central) and we embarked on our journey to the Rhône Valley! From the outset, Julie was extremely personable and friendly and even brought us fresh local pastries for breakfast.

The Rhône district is split into the north and south. We visited two vineyards in the north which only make up 3% of the Rhône district! On the way to the vineyards, we stopped off at Côte-rôtie hill Belvedere to take in the amazing views and taste some grapes

By 10am we had arrived at our first vineyard – Les Vins De Vienne. The name comes from a Roman City and the vineyard is only around 20 years old, the owners having planted a vineyard on the site of a Roman vineyard. The company is owned by three wine connoisseurs, Yves, Francois and Pierre. They say that “Our tastes may differ but we share the same philosophy about wine and all agree when it comes to quality. We have this desire to do things well, like a musical trio where each one plays his own score whilst playing for the group”. What a lovely motto to have!

We embarked on a tour to discover how the wine was produced by the vineyard and the different methods for white and red wine! I didn’t realise that the barrels could be oak, concrete or metal. The vineyard produces around 43 different wines and exports to USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Thailand and the UK.

We sampled 6 different wines from the Croze-Hermitage, Saint Joseph, Cote-Rotie and Condrieu appellations, with one red coming from the Roman Vineyard (IGP Des Collines Rhodaniennes). Our favourite white wine was the JeanRaude from the Condrieu appellation made from 100% voignier grape. Red wine wise, we loved the Sotanum made from the Roman vineyard which is 100% syrah (as is all red wine from the Rhone valley) which was silky and smooth. Definitely the earliest I have drunk 6 glasses (small ones of course) of wine!

Around 11.30 we travelled to a smaller family run vineyard which has been operating since 1988 - Vignobles Verzier Chante-Perdrix. Situated up on the hills, it offers amazing views of Lyon! Similarly to Les Vins De Vienne, we discovered this vineyard’s process for making both its red and white wine. Our favourite white wine was the Authentic, another voignier from the Condrieu appellation which was floral and citrus-y and our favourite red wine was the Indiscrete, which was powerful and full of dark fruits.

It if wasn't for the pesky liquid allowances, we certainly would have been bringing back lots of wine from these vineyards!

Here are just a few snippets of what I learnt during my trip:

· The only grape for red wine from Northern Rhône is Syrah (Shiraz) and it is the types of soil that give the different taste to the wines

· The appellation d'origine controlee (AOC) is the French certification granted to certain French geographical indications for wines, cheeses, butters. It is not the easiest to obtain!

· For large wine makers like Guigal and Chapoutier, their names were historical and still are signposted on their land. This is no longer permitted for newer wine makers.

· The grapes are manually harvested for 2-3 weeks. Around 15-30 people assist depending on the size of the winery

· The vineyards are on the slopes to get more sun and the soil is better (granite)

I would thoroughly recommend a wine tour in Lyon with Rhone Trip! Julie was so friendly and knowledgeable, we learnt (and tasted!) a lot and the whole tour was well run and organised. Now where can we find a good voignier in London...

My husband had other plans so I decided to take this day tour and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Our tour guide Julie was lovely — she knew a lot about Cote Du Rhône wines and her English is excellent. We stopped at the top of the hills at our first stop on the Cote Rotie and enjoyed the view and seeing the workers tending the vineyards. Then we went to the Cuilleron winery and enjoyed samples of 9 wines including the only saki made in France in honor of a Japanese couple in our group. Next stop was lunch on our own in Tain-l’Hermitage. Julie was kind enough to invite me to join her at a delightful local restaurant since I was alone. Then we stopped at the Valrhona chocolate store and museum briefly to allow time to make some purchases. Next we drove to the top of the hills to hike up to the chapel that gives L’Hermitage its name. Glorious views of the vineyards and the town below. Finally we visited the Delas winery for a sample of five more excellent wines, and then returned to Lyon. It was a completely delightful day in wonderful company and can’t speak highly enough of the experience!

Revisiting a city you have known in the past but somehow not returned for many years can either disappoint or in the case of lyon make you question yourself on why it has been so long. Much more to see as well. Please make sure you walk down the Quaiside of the Soane towards Confluence.

First of all, I would recommend doing a group tour. I was brave and foolish enough to drive and it was quite difficult even with Google Maps. We started in the morning from central Lyon and after navigating narrow streets and tunnels and heavy rush hour traffic, we finally were driving next to the river. We stopped at the first wine village on the map but everything was closed. So we put the next stop on the GPS and drove. Much to our dismay, we ended up back in central Lyon. The lesson: be very careful when entering destinations as one wrong letter can send you to the wrong place. We re-started and drove straight to Villafranche-sur-Saone. Almost no one in this small town spoke any English, so it was hard finding our way around and the signage was non-existent. We had lunch and then located the tourist office who were very helpful. She called a few wineries and found one where we could do tastings and gave us detailed directions. We then did the scenic drive along the Saone River and did some wonderful wine tasting. We stopped at Chatillon d'Azergues, where the wine maker and his assistant were super friendly and helpful and we ended up doing a free wine tasting. The wines were great and we also ended up buying a couple of bottles. On their recommendation, we then drove to the gorgeous medieval town of Oingt. This town is beautiful with an old walled city, medieval churches, houses, cobblestone streets and killer views of the Beaujolais region, as it is perched on a hill.
Fortunately, the drive back to Lyon was quick (on the freeway) and uneventful.

We were a group of four couples and this wine tour was perfect. We visited two wineries but they were both excellent in terms of information and wines and the welcome we received.
Our stop for lunch was for a set menu but the restaurant was very accommodating in letting couples share the three course meal and we enjoyed a complimentary glass of very good wine.
Julie went out of her way to make the whole day a wonderful experience and I am sorry that we made her late to get home to her family.

I was a bit hesitant to sign up for this tour because there were no reviews, but it was very enjoyable. Our driver/guide (sorry, I don't remember her name) was pleasant and knowledgeable about the area. The first winery was established in 1972; the second one in 2015. We had 4 or 5 tastings at each one. The only criticism was that the person who normally gives tours at the first winery wasn't there, and our tour guide had to translate so it was a summary of what was said. We got to go into the vineyard with the winemaker at the second stop and he did his best to speak in English with assistance from the tour guide.

My wife and I had a fabulous day touring Beaujolais with Julie from Rhone Trip this week. From the moment of booking until the moment she dropped us off at our hotel, we had a truly customized, VIP experience. Julie is fantastic. She is warm, laid back, and knowledgeable. She worked with us from the start to make sure the experience was exactly what we wanted. She was flexible as to the start time, the areas we visited, and what we wanted to do. She truly listened to our wishes and transformed them into reality. I was extremely impressed that she even reached out to another tour company that we were working with on a previous day, just to make sure the two tours complemented each other and did not overlap. On our full day (approx 6+ hours) tour, we visited a very charming negociant who was very proud to tell us all about Beaujolais and pour many wines for us (including some very old vintages -- a truly unique experience!) and we also visited a small, family run winery making excellent wine from some of Beaujolais' most coveted crus. We also had an amazing (and filling) lunch with extraordinary views of the area. We felt the price was extremely reasonable (a deal, even!) in light of the personalized service we received and the wonderful experience we had.

We've done many wine tours across Europe and USA, and this was one of the best in every way. I wish that Rhone Trip could do all of our wine tours from now on. If you are looking for a tour in Beaujolais or Northern Rhone, don't hesitate. Book Rhone Trip!

While in Lyon last week, I had seen this tour online and booked it. Turned out to be wonderful. Julie, the guide was excellent. Her command of English was superb and her guidance and question answering was perfect. On the way to the winery, we tried to identify various scents that are found in wines. This was fun. The goat farm experience was great. The goats are adorable. We got to see the whole process. We tasted various aged goat cheeses that were paired with wine. The whole scenery there and back was charming. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour anytime!

This private day tour was a wonderful day of great wines, lovely villages and scenery. Our guide Julie had in depth wine and history knowledge of this beautiful area. Our interaction with Julie and the local wine growers and wine makers made this trip memorable. Lots of fun with lovely surprises.
