This museum in an impressive former palace contains some interesting exhibits related to the history and prehistory of the Grenoble region. The displays are not especially extensive so a visit need not take too long if you just want to get a feel for the collection especially as it is all in French and some of the (temporary?) sections are... All the museums in Grenoble are free for everyone, unless special expositions. The museum is mostly for its underground Romain ruins of Cularo, ancient name of Grenoble. / It is worth of stop there when in downtown Grenoble. Especially a nice place to cool down when it is hot outside in summer in Grenoble

It's great that it's free, but it's too bad there's absolutely no English, so tourists who don't understand French are left simply admiring the exhibits. The exhibits and the layout of the museum were nice, and I felt like my experience would have been great if they included English explanations. If you don't understand French, I would only recommend to... More

The museum was small, but all of its displays were very beautifully presented, especially the basement area where there are walls left over even from roman times. The signs are not in English, so having a basic knowledge of French is beyond helpful. If you have an hour or so to spare, definitely try to visit this museum.

This museum is a combination of an archeological/historical museum for Grenoble and an archeological in situ display. When a new tram system was built remnants of walls and buildings going back to Roman times were discovered and excavated. This site, including the old baptistery is available in a way similar to the "Histoire de Paris" on the square in front... More

if you are looking for an interesting way to spend an hour this could be the place for you. The underground baptistery which they discovered when building a tram way is a fantastic trip back in history. Not sure how old it is but it looks Roman and is presented really beautifully, although not overly English language friendly as no... More

Take a trip back to the 3rd and 4th centuries by just going down a few steps to the basement of the museum, to see amazingly well preserved fortified walls from Cularo (name of Grenoble at the time). These walls used to be 1.5 mile long (2km), and almost 30ft high (9 meters), and 11ft deep (4.5m)! The baptistery, which... More
