About Montenvers - Mer de Glace Train
Enjoy history and glaciology It takes about twenty minutes to climb the 1,000 metres up to the Montenvers-Mer de Glace attraction. Simply hop on board the famous little red railway train. Time will stand still, and you’ll enjoy this vintage method of transport. The track climbs the mountainside, running through the forest, tunnels cut through the rock and over viaducts. You enter the realm of the high mountains, and round the last bend you’ll feel the magic: you’ve arrived at your destination at the foot of the famous Mer de Glace glacier, at an altitude of 1,913m. A stunning panorama opens out before you, with the glacier below, an excellent testament to the climate change in this day and age.

Of you are in Chamonix, we highly recommend to go up the mountain. The view is great and of a trip to the ice caves also fun. 500+ steps down and later, up are a serious quest but with normal health everyone can do it.

Go and see the glacier before it finally vanishes. But try to avoid busy times (like the end of the day).

This was a lovely afternoon out. We really enjoyed the train ride up the mountain and then taking the gondola down to the stairs which leads you to the glacier / ice cave. The views are breathtaking, no matter the angle. As it was my first time inside a mountain glacier I didn’t know what to expect but I really enjoyed it and was fascinated by it. The little cafeteria serves delicious tarts and we do recommend trying the Mont Blanc beer. It was very refreshing and thoroughly needed after traipsing up and down the stairs. If you don’t have reasonable level of fitness then the stairs will be a bit challenging but there are plenty parts of the stairs you can stop to pretend you’re not gasping for air ha-ha. Also, not suitable bring your dogs! The stairs are steel with rigid edges and their paws and nails can get caught.

We took the red train to visit the Mer de Glace as part of the Mont Blanc multi pass. We visited the Aguille du MIdi in the early morning and the train around noon. It’s about a 10-12 minute walk from one to the other. The cool thing about the multi pass is you just use your multi pass card to board the train. You do not need a specific reservation or to trade it in for a paper ticket. My number one piece of advice is to bring at least one water bottle per person down to the ice cave. There are no facilities or opportunities to purchase water once you board the gondola. You will probably want to stop occasionally when climbing the 500 steps back up from the glacier. The nice thing is there are spots where you can pull over and catch your breath I would also be very hesitant to take dogs or small children. It’s a heck of an effort to get up to the gondola. Many of the steps are open metal treads that are rough on dog’s paws. We saw people carrying small dogs. If you are very fit you can do that but it would be hard. Do not underestimate how hard it is walking up all the steps to the gondola!! After we survived walking up the steps we stopped at the bar/cafeteria and the sandwiches were very good. (You can buy water bottles here if you didn’t bring it with you.)
