Yes, you've read it right - in Geneva. Geneva is a pretty dull town for which we wrongly planned two days. All attractions in Geneva you can pack in half a day, so we drove to Annecy on our second day (it's only a 45 min drive).
The second we arrived we were blown away by the beauty of this small town.
Annecy old town has a fairy tale setting - charming small winding streets with pastel colored houses around the river, big lake, plenty of restaurants and cafes...double cheaper than Geneva. We regretted we didn't plan a night here, so we stayed until after dinner when we drove back. Beautiful small town.

We loved Annecy old town. Very picturesque. Heaps of restaurants and ice cream places.
We parked at the castle on the top of the hill as we wanted to start our day there (beware it is closed between 12 and 2pm so we ended up by finishing our day with the visit of the castle)
Most parkings seem to be at the same rate inside the town so don’t waste too much time looking for the cheapest.. unless you want to park outside of the city.
We then headed down to the river ‘Le Thiou’ and walked on the ‘quays’ all the way down to Lac Annecy. The ‘Palais de l’île’ is a building not to be missed on the way - old 12th century prison.
Once you arrive at Lac d’Annecy, best to go for a stroll in the Jardin d’Europe to admire the lake. You can rent a pédalo or motor boat to go out for a tour, or there are organised boat tours with commentary that take you out on the lake.
On the opposite side of the ‘gardens’ is the Pont des Amours. If you cross it, there is a great playground for kids. We spent half an hour there before heading back into the old town for a bite to eat. Plenty to choose from.

Lovely old town, some nice shops and restaurants. Very much on the tourist trail so very crowded and cramped.

Moving away from the old town, Annecy town is beautiful. Sitting on the lake, lots of opportunities to hire bikes and cycle on the safe and plentiful cycle routes. Great restaurants and bars, and some great places to shop. A very active town with cycling, hiking, running and water sports happening everywhere you look.

The beginning of august sees the Festival Du Lac, which makes the town very crowded for a couple of days but we’ll worth it to see the fireworks over the lake.

Did a half day trip from Geneva to Annecy and was not disappointed by the decision. Old town is everything you'd expect from an aging, small french town. It did rain the entire time we were there, which didn't stop us from walking as many of the small alley's that we could, but it made for a wet/cold remainder of the day. Definitely suggest walking up the hill to get a different view of the city & also recommend walking out towards the lake.

It seems every French city or town has an Old Town district in the city center, the medieval core from which the greater city expanded. Annecy is no different, and its Old Town, or Vieille Ville, is especially charming and picturesque.

Known as the “Venice of the Alps,” it is surrounded by majestic mountains and Lake Annecy. It’s large and well-preserved, built around a twelfth-century chateau, with cobblestone streets and a multitude of shops and restaurants. Its streets are largely no-go zones for vehicles of any sort, and can be swarming with pedestrians at times. It is also the site of street markets on Tuesdays (food items only), Thursdays and Sundays, where one can find fresh produce, meats, cheeses and a range of prepared foods, along with clothing, shoes and jewelry.

Its charm brings tourists here in droves, so expect to see souvenir shops and other venues catering to the tourist trade.

The city is really nice with all the bridges, the water, nice walks with nice shops.

But unfortunately it is extremely dirty, you have garbage on the floor everywhere, if you find a garbage its completely full.

The place is very smelly.

People are rude and not friendly, we were not welcomed in most restaurant when they know we are here for dessert mentioning that people are only welcomed for dinner and it was just 5:00 pm.

The public restrooms are catastrophic and very dirty.

The parkings are available all around.

A wonderful gem in the French region of Savoie. Surrounded by high mountains, a wide lake and a large park which offer wonderful recreation opportunities for all ages and a perfectly preaerved medieval old city, where water and bridges are dominant. The people friendly everywhere. A surprise: The capital of ice cteam in the Alps!

Beautiful old town situated on the river and lake. Old buildings are painted in vibrant colours with consistent styles. Lots of good quality shops restaurants around. Views are beautiful everywhere in the old town itself and on the lake shore.

However, nobody needs to spend more than 1 day here. Visit Geneva first then take a train here for a day trip!

The location of the city itself could not be better - by a lake and nested in among the mountains. To top this the old town is very well kept and cozy. This of course draws quite a crowd, even on a rainy day in October. So be prepared that you will not be the only foreigner wandering around the old town. It is however well worth spending a few hours wandering around, people watching, drinking coffee/wine and just enjoy the cozy place.
More restaurants and bars than shops. Most shops sell typical tourist stuff, and quite a few sell the local cheeses and other things to eat.

We arrived in Annecy late afternoon and headed straight into the picturesque and historic old town. Our visit was limited to what we could see tonight, so as much as anything we just wandered and enjoyed the Atmosphere. We walked along the river/stream until it flowed into Lake Annecy and provided views of the Alps.
Many historic buildings, bridges, bars and restaurants lined the river. As we walked back to find that special place for dinner, we were treated to a lovely sunset. I would have liked longer to explore.
