Hike & History in Ollioules: Medieval Village in Provence Tour

Not many people know about the old medieval village of Ollioules and even less know that from the village there is direct access to the fabulous ridge of the Gros Cerveau mountains (Big Brain). Only locals know the trails.

We will start with a visit to the old medieval village penetrating the small alleyways discussing the glorious history of Ollioules. We will observe houses, fountains, olive oil mills, and time permitting - a quick visit to the 130 year old nugat factory! Every corner is photo op. A vertiable village in provence experience, far far from the tourist trail.

We will start to climb slowly up to the old chateau where glorious views of the bay below will mesmerize us. We will continue climbing up and taking an old well marked trail to the plateau of Gros Cerveau. From there we have incredible views of old fortresses, the gorges of Ollioules and the entire bay of Toulon. Must see. Not in any guidebook.

We spent the morning in Toulon walking around and visiting the market then headed to the museum after lunch. Not difficult to find with free entry and parking. It's small but cute with lots of information and things to see. Recommended.

This town has a local museum which is packed with interest and allows a tour of an 800 year old castle as one moves from one exhibit to another. This is not curated like the big museums where one is more conscious of the security than of the exhibits. The exhibits are truly fascinating, and some very old indeed. There are many of them, and you know that the splendid result is not the outcome large amounts of Government money, but of the enthusiasm of talented local people. The lady at the desk spoke English, and I wished I had more time there. Stair climbing mobility to be preferred.

Easy to reach from Toulon centre by bus and well worth a visit. The museum is quite compact but very informative with excellent exhibits and entry is free. Good way to spend an hour

Spent a relaxing couple of hours here. There are some very interesting exhibits, I particularly liked the fossils and beautiful collection of rocks and crystals. Take a stroll in the grounds, an oasis of peace in the suburbs of Toulon. Free entry, take the 36b bus from Place de la Liberté.
