One of the great traditions in France (in parallel with the large, famous art institutions), is the smaller Musee d'Art, often in a renovated small public building, house or villa.
The Musee Estrine is a
wonder! I could have spent all day in the beautiful, long, upper modern gallery with the adjacent splendid roof garden. The collection is small, the pieces large and the work significant. The lower temporary Arroyo exhibit was stellar as well, featuring defining pieces from early career until now. And finally, the exhibit on Van Gogh's work-featuring reproductions of his work, his writing and letters;
various interpretive documents, a slide show comparing his work to those before and after him; and a wonderful film describing his work in the context of Provence and his life issues- is one of the best and most comprehensive efforts of interpretation on an artist that I've ever seen. How sad that the place he was so prolific and felt sheltered, has no original of Van Gogh's work.
The Musee Estrine has a fantastic, animated and knowledgeable 'first face'
on the front desk, who explained everything that we'd see SO clearly and in perfect English. She really knew her stuff and was incredibly helpful. And finally, I must say that we found the renovation of the fine old building to create the Musee Estrine was exemplary. A wonderful half day- however you could also do it in 1-1 1/2 hours.

First thing to say is this is free to artists. Otherwise only 5euros. Just remember your art society membership card. When I visited the receptionist spoke great english and had spent time in the Uk including my home town of Edinburgh. There were 4 different art exhibitions. Contemporary but all very different styles. Plus an informative display with audio and videos included about Van Gogh. St Remy is on a Van Gogh trail with the St Pauls Sanitarium only a 1 klm walk away where VanGogh stayed for treatment and produced many works. The art in the gallery was a joy and the Van Gogh centre informative but dont expect any original work of his. Look carefully for opening times as well as those of the sanitorium, prior to organising your visit. Recommended

The temporary Bernard Buffet exhibit is interesting but somber, with paintings that are darker in nature. The Albert Gleize paintings are nice and the Van Gogh overview is also worth the time with a good documentary that shows current scenery and his work.

There is a bit of a movie and time line about Van Gogh, none of his work though. Saw a few other exhibitions which were interesting. Very friendly staff.

We'd hoped the Musee Estrine would open our eyes to the life of Van Gogh but unfortunately our lack of French meant we left unilluminated. Visually attractive but some brief English summaries /audio translations would have made a huge difference. I know... French museum... But global audience....?

Really enjoyed our visit here. The staff were welcoming and very helpful. The audio tour was interesting, along with the information on the walls - not much of which was in English!! The building itself was interesting too, and the gift shop sold a huge range of Van Gogh posters. Would thoroughly recommend a visit here.

The Musee Estrine is located in the center of the village of St. Remy de Provence. Located in a gorgeous building, the museum features an exhibit on the history of Van Gogh, which is handy because of the likelihood that visitors to St. Remy will have visited the asylum on the edge of town that cared for Van Gogh after his breakdown in Arles, and the still visible sites where Van Gogh painted some of his most famous works. The Van Gogh exhibit is small but comprehensive, including a video, a chronology of his life and copies of the nearly 800 letters he wrote to his brother Theo. The asylum, while extraordinary in its ability to evoke Van Gogh's tortured life, does not have a historical exhibit that sets forth this sort of detail The Staff at the museum is quite helpful, and suggested we also visit their current contemporary art exhibit, which was outstanding. Those exhibits change periodically, of course, but if the 2017 exhibits were any indication, the curators have an abundance of good taste. Because of its central location, you could visit the museum, and then have dinner at any of the numerous fine restaurants in the old center of St. Remy, or spend an afternoon shopping (and spending a fortune) in the high end boutiques.

A beautiful venue, with a great exhibition of art. While not a great art enthusiast this was special and the movie about Van Gough's life and art was special and entertaining. Not sure if it costs anything as it was national historic day and accordingly free, but frankly would have been happy to pay.
The gift shop at the end is also a rare gem.

I visited Musee Estrine recently and enjoyed my visit thoroughly. It had a lot of information about Vincent Van Gogh and their permanent collection helped to provide context on his influences and who he influenced.

There was also a Mario Prassinos exhibit, which was extensive and informative.
