About

Peaceful And informative interlude
Sep 2019 • Solo
Very nice small museum housed in a beautiful Renaissance building safer by huge plane trees in the place Favier - carefully curated yet diverse range of displays including agriculture, artists, antiquity, local Provençal culture and artefacts from the surrounding area. Nice calm escape from the busy crowds in summer.

We liked this museum!
Sep 2018 • Couples
We liked this museum, especially the section where old implements and equipment was displayed. It would be great to have more English explanation, though.

Glad we popped in.

Nice history of the area
May 2018 • Friends
I popped into this museum and enjoyed the displays featuring the old Provencal items. It was fun to see these historical items and learn how they were used. It is a small museum and was an especially nice respite from the outside heat.

A great overview of the town history and culture

This was a surprising find. It is a good size museum, walking through the history and culture of Saint Remy. There are temporary exhibits (about sheep when I visited). The building, an old mansion, is also lovely.

Dear Ada B, Thank you for visiting the museum. Actually we have a temporary exhibition about sheep until December 31th but also, on the second and third foor, there are permanent exhibits about Provence. The building was built in the 15th century and the courtyard is one of the most lovely place in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

A quiet interlude
May 2018 • Friends
This is a small provincial museum, so you never know what will be on display. The show on sheep raising was interesting and informative, worth about half an hour. My average rating shouldn't put you off, it's just not the Musee D'Orsay. I love small museums like this.

A good place to visit to learn a bit of local history, and it is also very centrally located. Lots of things to look at, and well worth a visit.

Historical Information
Jul 2017 • Solo
If you are interested in the history of the area it is worth a visit. The exhibition downstairs was only in French so I was worried that the upstairs section would be the same but actually there was information in English as well. It had displays that explained the history of the area which were interesting.

Absorbing visit
Dec 2016 • Couples
Having an hour to spare one Thursday afternoon I decided to go into the Musee des Alpilles. It is housed in a beautiful renaissance mansion in the Place Favier, the most attractive square in St Remy de Provence.
There was a temporary exhibition of paintings by Jean Baltus, who worked in the area between the World Wars. Th e paintings, supported by photos and diaries, were tastefully displayed, and took up most of the hour I had available.
The permanent exhibition has sections on local history, archaeology, bull-related events and famous characters of the area. For my next visit I will give myself more time to explore these more thoroughly!

Only go if you have done everything else
Oct 2016 • Couples
We were underwhelmed by what was on offer here. First of all, descriptions were all in French. In each room there were pages that were in other languages, however if someone else had them you were out of luck. Not very inviting place, not very friendly staff. We learned more about Provence by other museums and walking and looking at it's beauty on our own. It was a shame. Such potential for a great museum in this sweet corner of Saint-Remy.
