You will surely spend a lot of time here as it is the focal point of the city, which is a huge port. We picked up a terrific cruise to the Calanques from here, but also wanderer around admiring the boats and the views of the rest of the city. Lots of places to eat and drink.

the central point of the old town, the life of the city with boats, peaople, metro station, fishermans, bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and many many more. Not so good late the night and perhaps a little dangerous with strange people. Nice the roof mirror in the port, a very good point to have a photo shot !

You can’t visit Marseilles without visiting Le Vieux Port. Thousands of little boats bob about in the inky blue water. There are plenty of restaurants mainly catering for the tourist but quite acceptable to sit and watch the world go by! In the evening EVERY place fills up with drinkers & diners. I recommend going 2 or 3 streets back to find a more local bar/ restaurant.
We found the main drag to get very crowded whilst we visited in August. An interesting place!

The old port of Marseille is the heart of the city, very close to the antique Hellenistic port. Nowadays it offers a nice walk on both side, with many bars and restaurants.
If you want to understand the strategic location and to feel the beauty of the port you should walk up to the Emile Duclaux public park around the Pharo palace. From this upper location you’ll have a wonderful overview.

This large port area reminded me of the port in Valletta, Malta, only much bigger. It’s protected U-shape harbor is home to hundreds of sailboats which look absolutely stunning in the shimmering waters. The lovely architecture of the buildings that surround the water compliment the overall scene. There are countless cafes and restaurants here. Fishmongers are selling their catch right at the edge of the port basin. Lots of tourist-related activities in the area, but never felt tacky or Disneyland-like. There is an air of authenticity here. Great photo opportunities here, especially on a sunny day.

Le Vieux Port is the old port of Marseille and is predominantly now used for leisure boat facilities and berthing. There is a plethora of restaurants all around the port and there is no shortage of people and customers. This is also where Le Bateau (ferry) which takes you to the Frioul Archipelago for 11.10€ each return on a very regular schedule. As a tourist the port is a must visit and Frioul is a definate visit for its historic and biodiversity interest.

La Vieux port is the central place at Mersailles. Tourist should visit here all day of their travel....one would find all season food , mix varieties....& also lot of desserts.
Boating is a must go from Port to either Chateau d'if or frioul
It's approx 11-12 euro per head.

The word that best describes this location is utter filth. Garbage everywhere. You can't take a step without stepping on vomit, piss, phlegm or snot. Rats are about the size of a cat. There is a heavy smell of garbage and piss everywhere. It is full of drug dealers and members of the underworld, beggars and homeless people. Restaurants charge exorbitant prices for what they offer, many of which are frozen. I don't recommend.

A compact area around a sea inlet. Very pleasant to stroll around and soak up a Mediterranean atmosphere. Masses of restaurants and bars to chose from but mostly based around seafood as one would expect. Those nearest the Quai Belges tend to be more expensive, some very. However, if you take the trouble to look around you can find some very good deals. It's on the Quai du Port that you get the Petit Train to take you to the Notre Dame de la Garde, As with all major tourist areas take care of your belongings. A must visit place in Marseille.

I would guess that few tourists come to Marseille and fail to visit the Vieux Port.
It certainly didn’t disappoint me. It’s huge and full of life. You will not struggle to find a cafe, restaurant or bar. Many of the city’s other tourist attractions are within walking distance. It also seemed to me to be a very safe place to be.

2 jours a Marseille suffirat.

We have a few hours in Marseille, we fly into the main airport and then need to train to Cassis. Is it possible to see the old port in 2-3 hours while I transit?
Written September 18, 2016
If you get a taxi to and from, yes you cold spend an hour or so here. Well worth it, if you don't mind rushing.
