About
While this military fort has been closed to the public for 360 years, the Citadelle de Marseille is gradually opening its doors on a permanent basis. The first major step will see our Gardens welcoming neighbours, Marseillais, and tourists from May 2024 onwards. Our ambition? To restore and transform this defensive military fort into a place of life, creation, and culture; a heritage third place of creations and innovations. The Citadelle de Marseille Association is a non-profit organisation under the 1901 Law, and a member of the SOS Group. Since 8 December 2021, it has held a 40-year BEA for Fort d’Entrecasteaux, the upper part of Fort Saint-Nicolas, with two missions: to restore the site and open it to the public.

This fort is a 17th century construction with some quite interesting history within its fortifications. it was built high on a hill, and was meant to warn against attacks to the city, but also acted as a sort of centre of attack against the citizens of Marsaille when they tried to show some kind of independence against the authorities. Today the fort is divided into two sections. As we found out, you can't just go up there and visit. You can only enter by prior arrangement! But you can go up to the entrance and have some pretty good views of the surroundings. Worth walking to the top!

Constructed in 17th century upon an order of French King Louis 14 , this fortress was built at the entrance of old port , having a form of a star , to protect the city from revolutionists

St Nicholas is located on one extremity of the old port entrance , on the other extremity lied the fortress of Saint-Jean , the 2 fortress are a famous landmark of the city

It is a part of the rich history of the great city of Marseille . Visit it if you have time , and if you haven't just take a souvenir photo from exterior

The Citadel of Marseille is finally ours!
I was present at the inauguration of Fort Saint-Nicolas and what a joy!
In addition to being an exceptional heritage site and one of the best viewpoints in Marseille, the fort treats us to a great cultural offering: exhibitions, artists' works, strolls in the gardens, evenings... A tavern completes everything, nothing is missing!
I highly recommend!

Wander inside this restored medieval fort and appreciate the many audio-visual shows in key rooms. Also, see the ramparts, with a nice view of the narrow entrance to the old port. Cross the two pedestrian bridges to either side of the fort.

Another interesting piece of history. All the forts are worth having a look if you have the time. Easy to get to by foot or use the efficient public transport.

Both these fortifications were built in the 1660's by King Louix XIV. During the 1790's it was attacked and badly damaged by the local citizenry. It was restored (sort of) in 1834 as Napoleon III saw the need for defensive measures. Restoration replaced the rosy pink damaged stone with plain, gray rock.

To help tell which fort is which, the Fort Saint-Jean has the rounded tower on the edge of its promentory.

At this time, the fort was split into 2 smaller forts; an upper and a lower. They have different names. It did not play the same kind of role that fort Saint-Jean played during the French Revolution: it wasn't a main prison.

The fort complex received historic designation in 1969 and can be toured, provided guests contact the Tourist Information Office. We found contact info for the office by going to cheminsdememoire and following directions.

As others have reported the gates were locked to enter. I looked online and the website said that you can only visit if you organize it through the office of tourism.

Tried 4 days to get in but it seems closed? - Wish they would put a sign at the bottom of the hill! If it was open would be a great view over the harbour
