Yes the neighborhood is gritty and covered with graffiti but it also has an incredible energy. We strolled here at midday on a Wednesday and had lunch at one of the numerous places with seating in the cours. The vibe was lively, young and local and we loved it.

Marseille is known for its ‘places’! Wherever you go you find plenty of interesting squares boasting different atmospheres. This is a trendy, hippster style area with lots of bars and restaurants. Very colorful with all the graffiti and the stairs leading up to the square.

The biggest open space with dozens of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops around the square. All Marseille meets in the early evening for an apero and to continue all through. There is also a market of fresh produce several days a week.

With art boutiques, the Noailles market, interesting clubs and cafes, and a whole lot of good, reasonably-priced restaurants, this is easily my favorite neighborhood of the city. The constantly-shifting graffiti and playful crowd make it a great place to just hang out. Don't miss the tour at the Savonerie de la Licorne, where you can see for yourself just how the famous Marseille soap is produced. Concerts at Le Cafe Equitable and Le Molotov, a drink at le Champ de Mars, outdoor concerts, street fairs, and weekly Wednesday morning markets are a great way to experience Marseille culture.

I came here in a whensday around noon, and all I found was a dirty area, foul smelling and a bit crowded. There are several cafés (not bad-looking) and a children's playground. The streets around it are also dirty and there aren't any interesting stores. Really not worth the effort.

If you're wanting to relax on your trip to Marseille, look no further than Le Cours Julien. There are numerous little shops to browse around and if you want to take home Savon de Marseille, avoid the touristy places around the Vieux Port and head for La Licorne. It's soap heaven at 34 cours julien where not only can you find the original olive oil variety, but lavender, old rose, mimosa & numerous others. You can also visit a workshop at the back of the shop where the soap is still produced.
It's definitely one (if not 'the') best areas to eat and drink too, not as touristy and expensive as some others. The locals far outnumber anyone else.

This is definitely the place where you wanna spend your afternoons smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer in Marseille. Located near Le Canebière and La Plaine, this quite short street is riddled with brasseries and bars. It's the place where all the young students and hipster artists hang out. The only negative aspect is that it is almost empty at night after 10 pm, even on Fridays, so the only people you can find are homeless bums. Where do all the young people go?!

After wandering around the beautifully raw city of Marseille for a week I came to the realization that Cours Julien was my absolute favorite neighbourhood.
The beautiful staircase leading up to the neighbourhood is cluttered with street art. It invites you to the heart - the cours. The beautiful square with the shops and restaurants/bars carefully ornamented with art creates a masterfully hippie-ish vibe. This vibe is further strengthened with the The smaller streets lead you to cool stores selling hand made clothes, second hand items of clothing and other vintage nicketynacks.
Only downside of Cours Julien are the stores opening hours - which are somewhat unpresictable.

If you do however tend to prefer a more secure and tidied up neighbourhood - Cours Julien isn't for you.
I am, however, a person that sees beauty in what conventionally is considered ugly, so I much appreciated the grafitti and the somewhat dirty sidewalks. Cours Julien has a soul.

The place is literally a dump whole. Or rather a nice little neighborhood ruined by filth and poor graffiti. Urine smell, trash and homeless is what to expect.

This is the place where the young, artsy folks hang out. Dozens of cafes and bars. You'll even find some cinemas, and a farmers' market one day a week.
