Beutiful small island with great beaches.
We went here without knowing anything about it, but it was the highlight of our time in Marseillles. We took a short ferry ride which was beautiful. We found some beaches with almost no swimmers!! Beautiful hiking. Take sun gear, a water bottle and maybe a picnic. Everyone age 1-70 enjoyed it.

A nice simple excursion from Marseille
Marseille is a great place to visit but if, after a few days, you fancy a break form the city the trip to this island may be the answer. Tickets were easy to purchase at the kiosk in the old port and the journey across to the island takes approximately 25 minutes. There are numerous hiking opportunities and in the summer months there is the option of relaxing on the beaches and swimming. You can take lots of lovely photos of Marseille. There are some bars and restaurants on the island too but expect to pay higher prices.

Beautiful - ferry needs booking ahead!
Stunning destination a 30’ ferry from Marseilles. Walk left from the ferry and up the hill for the best and most secluded calanques. Book your tickets online as daily availability is limited in busy periods - we rocked up at 11 and were only able to go on the islands at 16:30!

Another place in Marseille that should be done if you’re here for a few days. You can pick of the ferry in the southeast corner of the harbor but make sure to go by before you need to go out as certain times of day could be completely packed so you should plan ahead. Also be aware that later in the day, the boats can also fill up quickly and we stood in line for about an hour to catch a boat back after some time on the island. We finally made it on the third one out. If you can also pair this trip with a stop at Île d'If as well would be best. We were unable to do it the day we went due to the wind and choppy seas not allowing for safe docking at the smaller island. We spent about two hours wandering the island and that really consisted of getting off the boat and walking out to the Batterie du Cap de Croix and the old abbey and back. As noted before it was very windy so the beach was just a little cool on our October day. we went prepared but was not meant to be. On a less windy day, we would have likely spent some more time and checked out more of the island and all its little inlets. Calanque de Morgiret and Calanque de l’Eoube offer some great photo spots if you can get to them and have the time. Best option to come here is to plan for a day and get on an early ferry out to have the most time to explore everything as much as possible. There are some bike rental options during the high season, otherwise you’re walking so plan your footwear accordingly.

most beautiful day trip for Marseille if you can sacrifice a day. The boat trip was 20min per ride and was fun, too. On the island you'll find many different hiking trails (but don't worry, they are quite easy - I managed to do it in a skirt) through the rocky landscape. There are ruins to explore and beautiful sights to see. I really enjoyed watching the seagulls all over the islands. We spent about 5 hours hiking across the two bigger islands. At the end we enjoyed a drink on the docks. Highly recommending the experience!

Beautiful island with lots of stunning vistas. Many old forts and rundown buildings present. Asked ourselves many times why there was so many abandoned buildings! The nice thing is there is a calmness rather than eeriness on the island. Short 20 minute walk to the beach in a bay (away from the main marina). Would recommend bringing food and water and comfy shoes. There are restaurants in the main marina area, but nothing too delicious, and pretty pricy.

A Must! This was by far my favorite activity in Marseille. We took the ferry in the morning and arrived on Frioul with our picnic. We stayed all afternoon on a private beach with hardly anyone near us. The water was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to come back again!

Well worth the 20 minute navette from Vieux Port Marseille. We enjoyed both the Calanque de Morgiret and Plage de St Esteve for swimming. And then grilled fresh sardines and battered calamari lunch at Le Phocea on the Quai D'Honneur.

Had a wonderful afternoon visit exploring these islands. You can purchase a ticket that allows you to get off at the Chateau d'If, and then get back on the boat and to the rest of the Iles du Frioul. Boats depart from the old port in Marseille. Short trip, perhaps 20 minutes or so to get there. Great views of Marseille and the surroundings from these islands. Well worth a visit.

We had a gorgeous day to spend on the island, which we reached by a crowded ferry. We'd neglected to bring a lunch with us, so we ended up eating an early dinner at one of the tourist traps(restaurants) that face the dock. Specifically, we went to the one serving various incarnations of paella. The pictures were totally misleading, as we should have figured by the empty tables, but we thought it was empty because it was still early evening. We each had a different version of paella. Mine was made with "squid ink," which darkened the sauce nearly black in color. While this was not unexpected, the lack of seafood was disappointing, to say the least. I don't remember the name of the place, but it specializes in paella - don't patronize them unless you want to pay way too much for substandard food.

The Frioul islands are a great getaway from Marseille--you feel very far away from the city when you're there since there are no cars, and you have a direct access to the sea. Go early, buy tickets online and bring a pic-nic lunch. Stay for the day to relax, swim and enjoy.
