As others have mentioned, I would simply recommend enjoying the exterior of the castle. Inside, they have some temporary art exhibits but that's it. I was expecting more of the traditional castle environment with period furniture and rich history, but everything historical has been cleared out. It also costs seven euros to enter! But the castle is beautiful from the outside, and the surrounding town centre is super cute.

Gordes looks amazing as you approach, then you get there and realize you shouldn't have bothered. There is nothing there other than a castle which you can't visit and some over priced tourist shops. Hence forbid if we thought we could have had lunch there! Looks brilliant in all the tourist literature but my recommendation is not to bother there are lots of other real villages to visit in Provence

The castle was built in 1031 and rebuilt in 1525. It is an imposing monument with its high stone walls and round towers combining the medieval and renaissance features. In the morning sun, the beige stone walls of the castle glows orange.

Gordes itself is a lovely town and the exterior of the castle is really impressive. We couldn't wait to see what was inside. We have done many castle tours in France and I have to say this is the only castle that was a complete disappointment. There was nothing in the rooms but some art that I really didn't get (an artist that painted on stones and rocks I think). There were only a few rooms open and the cost to go in was 4 Euro. It should have been free for what it offered and even for free I don't think I would have wasted my time if I had known how little was there.

We did a late afternoon visit to Gordes & at the last minute decided to visit Chateau Gordes. We were unaware that the €7 entry fee merely covered the cost of viewing an art exhibition & expected to see some authentic pieces from within the history of the chateau. Unfortunately, except for the huge fireplace & the spiral staircase, there was nothing else to see. Even from the small windows, there was no vista & no way to get up to the ramparts or around the area outside at the top of the building that we could find. The art was ok as a distraction, but not really what we expected to see. Very disappointing attraction from a tourist perspective, especially in an area that is full of tourists & tourist sites.

Beautiful to view from outside. Lots of side streets and nooks to take photos of.
Inside is rather meh. €7 and they usually have an exhibition going on. Don't feel bad if you don't go in. It does not have too much to see.

You can take a tour of the mostly empty rooms of which there are five for about €7.50 per adult. It was an exhibition of sorts for some really crap modern art which we were not at all interested in. We were hoping to learn more about the castle and see some decorated rooms. We were sorely let down by this tourist trap. Best to avoid if you see it open.

The chateau (more like a castle) with its high walls and turrets dominates the center of town and all main roads run through the square immediately in front of it. We weren't able to view the interior as it was closed to the public when we were there but we did admire it since it is in incredibly beautiful condition. There is a small open air market in the square and a number of very cute shops close by---we left the area much lighter in the wallet so we can attest to the finery they have to offer, especially beautiful linens and children's clothing. Our granddaughters love the embroidered dresses we purchased---Caution... these are not outlet prices!!!!
Parking is difficult so better served to park outside main town and walk in.

We visited Gordes on a Tuesday morning when the Place du Chateau was filled with a bustling market with produce, baked goods, charcuterie, flowers, household goods, lavender soaps and local art works. A historic monument since 1931, the first fortress was built on the high point in Gordes in the 11 th century with renovation and enlargement during the Renaissance. After being used as a warehouse, the castle became property of the municipality in 1811. Once the home of a boys school and now an art museum, the chateau is open for visits from 10 am-noon and 2-6 pm. Entry was 4€

Do what I did - get up at 6am and see the sun rise over Gordes. You will be alone. Then drive on into the town and walk around - you’ll have parking in the center of town, it won’t be hot and there will be no other tourists. Bliss.
