The Fort du Mont Alban is located in Agradavel and was built between 1557 and 1560 as a defense for Nice after the siege of Nice in 1543. It is one of the most striking French military defenses dating back to the 16th century, and it has remained amazingly intact. It was declared a historical monument in 1909. Though it is not open for touring, it is definitely worth a visit. Most come here for it offers one of the best views on the French Riviera. Its location atop a high hilly region yields really marvelous vistas.

I have been staying in Villefranche for over 25 years and we regularly take visitors up to the fort to see the spectacular views over Cap Ferat and Nice. Plenty of parking too and usually only one or two cars up there. However, last year we made the mistake of going up on a Friday evening 5- 6 pm. There were loads of cars parked at the top and going back down along the road. All cars leaving (never saw other cars before) were driven by single males and on the drive near the top and whilst up there there were single males coming out of the bushes some adjusting their trousers if you get my drift. I'm not making any comment on adult behaviour, in privacy I think anything goes but I would not personally choose a red light district as a tourist attraction and this is not far off that. Don't wander off into the bushes unless you are prepared for a big surprise!

My wife and I bought a couple of pastries in Villefranche so we could have breakfast at the fort. The climb was about 45 min. And it was steep. I’m 60 and it didn’t kill me and the views from the fort are worth it...Nice on the west side and Villefranche on the east.
Can’t get to the inside, but the grounds are very nice.
We were unclear as to the route up so I have included a picture of our route.

The foot path is signposted from M6098 Princess Grace Boulevard. We walked up very steep steps through the woods and the Parcourse exercise area. Joined the road Chemin du Fort. It took about 35/4O mins brisk walk quite strenuous at first.
Stunning views over Villefranche-sur-Mer to Cap Ferrari and Nice on the other side.
You can walk around the base of the fort. Visiting is v limited. We did not but you can book a tour at Centre de Patrimonie in Nice or on line. It is Eu5 and I think you get the bus up from Nice with a guide.
The return down to Villefranche was via a track to the west of the fort. The start of the track is off the main road up by the fort but tricky to find. Persevere as it is there and one on it way to follow a steep rough track down to Avenue General Leclerc and into town.
We were up and back down in 1 1/2 hours but if you take a picnic it is a nice spot to linger.
PS you can drive up or walk via the road but not so much fun!

The structure is steeped in history and provides some great views of the harbor. Not much more then that. Need to take a bit of a climb up hill to reach it. If you have the time it is worth the visit.

Spectacular views from the top to both east and west. Much quieter than the other castle in Nice, but there is no access to the fort itself. There were fewer visitors on my visit, so it was not crowded. Some nice walking trails around the fort and nearby. Buses run from the city up to the fort and there are picnic areas nearby. Certainly worth a visit!

Our tour guide Ingrid drove us up here, and the views are simply stunning. Overlooking Nice and the port, the views are even better than those on Castle Hill.
Highly recommended especially on a clear blue day.

Although you can drive to the fort, we always enjoy the short and easy hike up from Villefranche-sur-Mer. It takes about 35 minutes. The views of Villefranche, Cap Ferrat and the sea on the way up and from the fort are lovely. You can walk around the fort but can’t go inside. You also have limited but pleasant views of Nice from the top. We like to walk back down through Mont Boron Park, then walk along the port of Nice and back to Villefranche along the beautiful coastal paths (or we walk into Nice).

It is a quite big park. So we can see the FORT DU MONT ALBAN but also we can go around. It was clear day, so we could enjoy go along there.

After a steepish climb up stone stairs, through meandering woodland, steadily getting higher and higher, then a short walk to the fort for fab views over Villefranche - we could see our apartment from there! Talk a walk around the Fort - you can't get in but worth taking a look about and on the other side of the fort Nice is revealed and you can see the airport and planes landing and taking off - take a pair on binoculars for even better sightings. Takes about an hour of slowish uphill walking but helps to get those calories burned after indulging in all the food in Villefranche!

Does anyone know where I can find a trail map of the area incuding up to the fort from the port of Villefranche?
Written February 20, 2017
On peut visiter le fort uniquement en juillet - aout et septembre; sur réservation au centre du patrimoine de la ville de Nice. tel : +33 4 92 00 41 90 et son site internet dont malheureusement on ne peut pas donner ici le lien.
