About
The Museum of Prehistory in Solutré contains exhibits from one of the richest sites in Europe. Solutré was a hunting site for ever 25 000 years. Man of the Upper Palaeolithic (35 000 – 10 000 BC) trapped, killed and dismembered thousands of horses and reindeers, so leaving layers of bones. This accumulation of bones gave rise to a famous legend, which we know to be untrue, that the horses were driven over the cliff by their hunters.

This is a very good little museum with some interesting artifacts, exhibits, and a stunning view of the cliff. It also has some great views of all the vineyards going down into the valley below. Descriptions are in English.

The views from the museum, built into the the great Roche de Solutre, are spectacular enough, with the views over the vineyards down to the Saone Valley. The museum itself is if excellent standard and there is something to interest all age groups.

Either before or after you've climbed la roche, a visit to the museum is well worth it. It takes only about 20 minutes and is very comprehensive about the history of the region, in particular the rock. There is an English commentary as well as French.

I have been to hundreds of museums in my life, but this one gets the very most out of its artifacts. The site is visible from many miles away. There is a shear cliff standing out on the horizon. You wind your way through picturesque villages as you drive to the base of the cliff. There sits the relatively small museum. The story begins with the massive bone finds, mostly small horses. The museum takes you along with the discoverer of the find. You read and hear about the first theory of a Stone Age stampede off the cliff. You work your way through the evidence and further digs until you come to a more realistic scenario. All the while you are learning about the life and habits of the Stone Age humans and animals. Once the story is clear, you set forth on a small circuit of some 15 recreations of the original habitat, learning about the geology and flora. This puts your experience into clearer focus. At the end of your visit, you have the feel that you have experienced and learned a great deal. Then you can take one of the trails to the top of the rock.
I would suggest that the concept and execution of this museum should be a model for the curator of any museum. It is certainly one of the very best organized that we have seen anywhere in France, or Europe for that matter.
Did I say that I liked it?

This is a very interesting museum explaining the area. It is located overlooking the Pouilly valley on a trail leading up to the rock at Soultré.

This museum is a gem, especially the kids exhibition (which seems to be temporary - it would be great to keep it as permanent part of the museum). Very nicely done, with lots hands-on exhibits for kids. The museum is located in a beautiful landscape, so pack your walking boots and enjoy the view over the Saone plain towards Mont Blanc.
