We wanted to see this chapel after visiting the Matisse museum in Nice. It is a chapel like few (or any) others. The place is small, very light and serene, bathed by mellow light from Matisse's stained glass windows. In addition, his huge drawings in ceramic walls are very impressive and present an interpretation of Christianity that is very much... More

This is, in some respects, a small, simple, modern chapel. But the integration of design with the building's purpose is a remarkable illustration of Matisse' vision and skill. So the shapes, textures, colours and images chosen work together to create a beautiful space, full of light and colour.

This chapel is an easy walk from the town. Check opening times before you go. We went at 2pm when it opened for the afternoon. The chapel is small so you don't need to plan a huge amount of time. There is an inexpensive entrance fee. There is a modern visitors centre attached and bags have to be left there.... More

We went for mass on Sunday and being a Catholic and an art lover this was a very special experience. A wonderful spiritual feeling surrounded by Matisse's creativity.

Matisse made a great job of this, it is highly thought provoking and the simplicity also hides a great deal of thought with regards to colour, meaning, symbolism, humanity.............a special place

Full of symbolism and simplicity. Visited 25 years ago when one could see the outside more easily and it made more sense architecturally, however it is still a beautiful experience.

A 20 mintute walk from Vence, opens at 10am. A beautiful chapel with a very special history. Stunning stained glass and tiles. Stay and listen to the talk it's fascinating, spoken in French and English. Some great drawing too.

If you are used to large churches or attractions with masses to see you could be disappointed. This is a small chapel for the resident 5 nuns. Designed by Matisse at his most pared back, you need to approach it with simplicity in mind. It gives a feeling of light and contemplation. The opening hours are very limited , 6... More

Been there at almost closing time. The lady selling tickets sounded strange. She accepted the payment without giving a ticket back. I think people can just walk in without being noticed. The chapel itself can be seen quickly (few minutes). Unfortunately I arrived during a guided tour and a big group was invading the space. Nice collection of drawings from... More

Having slogged up here by local bus and foot we were put out to find the place full with a coach party. But we just had to wait it out and we got a short precious time of quiet in the chapel before the next lot arrived. There was also an excellent guide on hand who clearly loves the place... More
