About
For over 400 years, the Citadel rings the city. Element of the defence of the port the most important between Antibes and Toulon for centuries, it is now one of the few monuments of this magnitude of the Var coast. Proud of its rich maritime past, Saint-Tropez has decided to create a modern museum in the dungeon of the town's citadel, allowing all visitors to discover the daily lives of men and women who shaped over the centuries the Saint-Tropez of today.

- hannahstravelexperience96Austria56 contributionsMaritime Museum overlooking Saint-TropezAfter a short walk you reach the citadel, which towers over Saint-Tropez. From there we had a good view of Saint-Tropez, the sea and the opposite coast. The fortress grounds are easy to explore from the outside. Inside the fortress there is a museum about shipping and the history of Saint-Tropez. Unfortunately we only had a short stay in Saint-Tropez, so we were not able to see the entire exhibition. Nevertheless, a visit was worthwhile for us.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 12, 2024
- Sarah CAmiens, France67 contributionsGood surpriseMuseum located in the citadel, high above the city, which provides access to an exceptional view of the surrounding area. The entrance price is very affordable (strangely given the prices in the city). We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and richness of what was presented to us in this museum. Very rich, very well presented. Lots of information through videos, models, paintings, drawings, etc. 1h45 visit, and we could have stayed longer.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 18, 2024
- Sylvie S9 contributionsBeautiful use of the citadelHow to revive a magnificent building, very well restored: with the creation of this maritime museum! The breathtaking view takes us to another point of view of Saint Tropez and its bay. The little extra: peacocks on the loose! Do not miss this visit during a stay.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2024

A excellent place for history of St Tropez , Set in the old town , paid to get in 4 euros (Sept 2022 prices) for adult.
It used to be a fort many years ago and basically it tells you all about the seaman plus ordinary town folk that lived there and made St Tropez. With models and artifacts and short films about some of the objects you see, Like a Torpedo and what boats were used in the voyages around the world..Go and see the Power Boat models that were used for World Power Boat championships back in the day.
You get lovely views of the town as well..
Toilets are on site and a souvenir gift job as well

Very interesting and informative visit. The place contains a museum on 3 levels linked to the history of St Tropez and the sea. Very fun with photos, videos and reconstructions of scenes, boats... allow 1h30 to 2 hours for the most passionate. Very beautiful views of St Tropez and surrounding areas

Climb up a few steps from the old city of Saint Tropez and you find the nice old fortress which includes a lovely museum of the sea, historical regional scenes. All located within the old walls of the citadelle. You have a nice look over the bays surrounding Saint Tropez. It is very lovely and interesting for children and grown ups as well.

Why don't we go back to the audio guides?
Museums where you have to read everything are dead
The view could be beautiful if a few branches were cut

A visit not to be missed if you go to St Tropez.
The Citadel is a magnificent place with superb views of Saint Tropez and the coast.
The maritime museum located in the Citadel is really great. The scenography of the rooms, the content, the models are really well done.
And finally you may have the chance to see a temporary exhibition which adds character to the visit.
Finally, the staff is very friendly. We had a good chat with the gentleman at the ticket office who loves his job, his city, the Citadel and human contact.
Brief ! Do not miss !!

Great idea of placing local maritime history in a wonderfully preserved fortress. Beautiful views on the surrounding town and bay with reasonably priced tickets. Really worth visiting!

A must see, beautiful property, outstanding views, night and day. Gives you a glimpse of the past and what a beautiful town this was. Historical marine cemetery blow. Hard to park on busy summer months, but worth visiting.

This is worth a visit, We climbed the Citadel on a hot day to come up and see the best views in St Tropez as you walk the ancient grounds you will see Pea Hens wandering around and you can get 360 degree views of St Tropez and inside the towers is a very informative and modern museum. This is a must do when coming to St Tropez.

Honestly, the last thing I expected in St Tropez was a museum. So reluctlanty I climbed up the steps on the park, got to the top only to discover a real gem.
The view, as other reviewers already stated, is excellent as you can see basically the whole city, bay and surrounding hills.
But the best part was getting into this fortress turned museum. Absolutely fantastic, it is part History of town, part nautical museum, very clean and nice, with very interesting displays.
The entrance fee was 3 euros, not even a cup of coffee in this town, and you can have a great time. Recommended espcially if you have kids.

Scenic old fortress turned into an interesting, unpretentious naval museum, with stunning 380° views.
The location is superb, but the best part is getting into the museum. With information in both French and English, the mixed media exhibits are appealing for both young and old.
Quite low cost by St Tropez standards, the 3euros entrance fee is a steal!
The exhibits are tastefully displayed and cover the true identity of Saint Tropez in the past 500 years.
Indeed, St Trop was not just a picture perfect fishing village, but it turns out it had much greater importance.
The exhibits cover commerce and fishing trips along Provence’s coast, as well as long hazardous voyages aboard large merchant sailing boats beyond Cape Horn, journeys along the coasts of Africa and India, and the age of luxurious liners. Amongst notorious Tropezian celebrities,
I discovered De Suffren, who had volunteered to help the colonists during the American Revolutionary War.
Highly recommended !

Hi - How close can you get to the citadel, and more importantly, can you get a great view of the harbour/town after the citadel has closed? I was hoping to go up there around 20:00 when the sun is setting, but the museum will have closed by then.

Hello, there is a path on the Citadel feet where you can have a lovely view to St. Tropez harbour. Even if the view from the Citadel is of course worth to see.
