Historically, King Charles-Felix (1821-1831)initiated the project and its foundation was laid in 1840 by his nephew Charles-Albert. But following a torrential rain in 1841, the almost completed edifice collapsed. Finally it got completed in 1896. It is from this church that in 1860 all the electors left to cast their vote on the annexation to France.
Church provide a scenic view to the harbour and also a place of quietness in otherwise busy and noisy harbour area. Facade is in greek peristyle supported by huge granite columns. The bell tower was never finished. In the interiors there are 24 columns holding a plain roof and church looks like Roman basilicas. There is Virgin at master-altar. The big organ situated at the entrance was built in 1914.

Courtesy of Nice city, the harmonic orchestra of Nice plays classical music concerts every Sunday at half three. Recommended entertainment.

Pick up the pamphlet just inside the entrance to read the history of this church, quite detailed. On Sunday afternoon, start time 3:30, get there early to get a seat up front. And enjoy the free classical concerts by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Francois Leclaircie. This concert in March had five selections of three different composers, and at least three solo performers. including a solo with the instrument known aa as Euphonium.
A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Nice.

Eglise Notre-Dame du Port is a church built in the 1840s in Port de nice. There are other more popular churches in the old town of nice which I would recommend visiting instead.

Sitting majestically overlooking the port we were happy to see the door open as the exterior is impressive.
Sadly needing work as some area of the interior were showing signs of age but we loved spending 10/15 mins in a quiet historical church full of interest .

We drove by the church a few times last week and had no idea it was a church. It reminded me more of an old Roman palace then a church. That being said, the columns in the front gives it all its charm!

During the winter, there are free symphony concerts each Sunday here at 15:30. It was a well-done concert (hour long) and gave us a great opportunity to see the architecture of the church. It's easy to access the church from the old town: you just follow the promenade around Castle Hill and up into the port.

This is a bit small for European churches, but it is very pretty nonetheless. The place around is also very interesting. Recommended
