About
Soak up the breathtaking views from the top of the hill where the Castle of Nice once stood. Castle Hill, which towers over Nice’s historic core, is the most popular park in town. Hike (or bike) uphill through a set of winding trails or ride the elevator to the top for free. The park is worth visiting any time of the day—you can see the sunrise over the harbor (perfect time for beating the crowds) or watch the sunset over the Promenade des Anglais. A cannon shot goes off at noon every day. – Tripadvisor

- LindaSusanStafford13 contributionsBeautiful views on a lovely sunny dayQueue for lifts up took about 45 minutes. Amazing views at the top; make sure to visit on a clear day. There's a number of paths to walk around with viewing spots and the waterfall was great.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 9, 2023
- Alanah ReeveBury St. Edmunds, United Kingdom484 contributionsPerfect place to watch the sunsetMaybe one of the most beautiful views for the sunset over Nice and the sea. The walk takes about 10-15 minutes (I'm quick!!) but there are many places to stop off and appreciate the views/ beauty of nature. The waterfall is magnificent and provides amazing views of Nice and the med. I recommend visiting about 30 minutes before sunset for the best 'golden hour' and views as well as being able to get down in the daylight!! Do be warned however, the waterfall is very misty and you will get wet if you stand too close!!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 16, 2023
- Em Allen4 contributionsBrilliant, a must if you're in NiceAMAZING! Well worth the visit up. There's a little tour train and a free lift if you can't manage the steps. Just Google where the lift is, it's straightforward. Was closed due to repair when we visited so may be worth checking if you can, but you can sit and rest on the way up. Big area at the top with interesting parts and walks and views are stunning. No castle but some interesting ruins and just go up, you'll not regret it. There's also drinks and snacks and ice cream up there too, and shady areas, and a wee playground thing and somewhere the kids can kick a ball around. Toilets are 0.50 euro, they take cards but then it's a minimum 2 euros.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 22, 2023
- Christine PVancouver, Canada306 contributionsViews for days!Incredible views all around. On a sunny day, the Cote D’ Azur is spectacular. There is an elevator that takes you up the hill, or you can walk. Once at the top, there is a whole park to explore. Keep climbing for the best views. Pay washrooms and snack huts at the top. Go early in the day.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 1, 2023

It is very relaxing, park is clean, there are people playing, a couple of cafés with great view and good food. You can take the free lift up (note in December it stops running at 5.20pm) or walk up. Walk around the headland for views not just of the promenade but of the harbour with expensive boats too. A great way to orient yourself as well as to take in the amazing sunsets.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 7, 2023

When coming from the Promenade side, go to the left to find a lift which can be used to go up for free. Once up, there are multiple view points and also look for the waterfall. While coming back down, take the stairs to get the full experience.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 22, 2024

You can see right along the coastline for miles. Wear good footwear for safety as there are a lot of steps. The Colline du Château is the crown gem of Nice in my opinion. It provides some of the best views of the entirety of Nice and its towns, as well as its coastline. Depending on what time you visit, the crowdedness can vary. However, you will never feel like you there is one path you have to stick to when visiting as there are different routes you can explore upon in your climb towards the top of the Château. I would personally recommend going as early as possible to visit as there tends to be less visitors or if you are coming during the Autumn or Winter seasons, to go during the evening as you watch the sun set upon Nice. There is nothing to fault when visiting Colline du Château and thus it truly is a perfect site to visit.

It’s not a terrible walk up, but some sections of stairs are steep. You will be rewarded with amazing views of the beach on one side and the harbor on the other. Well worth the walk. Start your day there, knock it out, then enjoy eating lots of food knowing you earned it.

I underestimated how special Castle Hill was going to be. My husband and I casually went up about an hour before sunset (closing), and could have easily spent multiple hours up there exploring. I highly recommend going around 2 hours before sunset, or more. Bring a picnic lunch and drinking water. Additionally, the stairs up are not incredibly steep, but there are a lot of them. We noticed the top is accessible by car/bike, if that helps.
The medieval waterfall was truly spectacular, and the views of the rooftops, sea, and port were breathtaking. Lots of little moments for photography. Once the sun fell behind the hills, bats started fluttering in the trees. If you forget to look up you may miss them.

You can access the castle hill of Nice both by walking up the stairway (around 20 minutes) or by lift. Once on top of the stairway you will find a nice park and you will be able to walk around, take nice pictures from different angles and admire the town from some of the best views you can find. We suggest to bring some water with you, as it can be challenging to climb the stairs when it's very hot (the whole stairway is not covered and it's very hard to find repair from the sunrays).
Additional tip: if you have some spare energy we highly recommend a walk in the old town, which is located just 5 minutes away by walk. There you can rest, have a drink or a nice meal in a typical restaurant.

Such an amazing spot in Nice to enjoy the full views of the city and the coast. We took the panoramic bus to go there and the drive is wonderful with lost of greenery. What surprised me is that on top of the hill and all along the way there public toilets, which of course for some countries is normal but in my country nope.
the views you get up the hill are relaxing and inspiring. The atmosphere is joyful with people playing music and others dancing. I absolutely loved it.

FYI there is not actually a castle on this hill, but it is worth visiting nonetheless! At the base of the hill (by the #ILoveNice selfie sign) TAKE THE STAIRS (as opposed to the elevator) all the way to the top of the hill and be captivated by the breathtaking city and Mediterranean views along the way. Take a stroll through the park and make your way to the lookout offering a beautiful panoramic view of Port Lympia. On the way down the other side, cool off under the hidden waterfall...if you can find it!
Excitedly,

Castle Hill(Colline du Chateau) was a former military citadel overlooking the Bay of Nice. From the 11th century to the 18th century the castle was besieged several times especially in 1543 and 1691 and finally in 1705 the castle was overun by French troops and destroyed in 1706 under command of King Louis XIV.In the present era "Castle Hill" is the most famous and visited park in Nice. The view from the top of Castle hill of the French Riviera coastline and Nice Old port is a sight that is out of the World. There was some archaeological excavations in progress in a a part of the large hill side of the park this area has been made available to the public. The site contains remains of medieval walls and fortifications, as well as remains of the cathedral dated to the fifth century. Guided tours take place in groups of 20 and last about 30 minutes. There is also has a historical Jewish and Catholic cemetery at the other lower end of the park. Was at the right place at the right time and got to see a group of women doing dance workouts to the tune of loud music on speakers. Tourists can use the elevator to get to the top of castle Hill or walk the 300 stairs to the top.

This viewpoint is more than just a viewpoint, there is a park and cafe at the top as well. The views from the very top near the cafe are gorgeous! You can see Nice beach and city from one side and the marina from the other side. There is even a lift for anyone that can’t manage to climb the steps up there.

If you’re able to climb up to the top of the hill, it’s well worth doing for the views of the city and the coastline. It was overcast with a little rain when we visited, which kept us cool on the way up - there are a lot of stairs! A peaceful place with interesting little stops along the way.

Ciao a tutti.

Hi! My fiancé an I are planning a trip to Nice in May! How long should we plan to spend at Castle Hill including climbing the stairs, taking in the view of the city, and looking at the waterfall, descending the stairs, and/or anything else we may be missing with the experience?
Written February 21, 2020
Hi! I’d recommend 2-3hrs max to do it all. When you get back to the bottom, if you walk down the way past the graveyards I’d highly recommend wandering through all the little streets and shops, that was one of our favourite bits. Pop into LAC patisserie too if you get time!
Written February 21, 2020
You can’t you have to walk up the hill. You can go with an elevator by the beach side. It’s worth it.
Written May 26, 2019
Does this place close? Can you can still walk up late at night?
Written October 11, 2018
I don't know but assume lift will be out of action and gate locked due to waterfall etc for Health and Safety reasons.
Written October 16, 2018
Where is the lift to get to the top?
Written October 10, 2018
As you face the Hôtel Suisse, its to the left - there is a doorway into a tunnel that leads to the lift. It is signposted, which helps as you cant see the actual lift from the road
