It’s not a terrible walk up, but some sections of stairs are steep. You will be rewarded with amazing views of the beach on one side and the harbor on the other. Well worth the walk. Start your day there, knock it out, then enjoy eating lots of food knowing you earned it.

This viewpoint is more than just a viewpoint, there is a park and cafe at the top as well. The views from the very top near the cafe are gorgeous! You can see Nice beach and city from one side and the marina from the other side. There is even a lift for anyone that can’t manage to climb the steps up there.

It was free to go to the top and see a panoramic view of Nice, specially the old town area. In the right weather and the sun out, you could spend an hour here. There are some garden/parks in the vicinity as well.

You can access the castle hill of Nice both by walking up the stairway (around 20 minutes) or by lift. Once on top of the stairway you will find a nice park and you will be able to walk around, take nice pictures from different angles and admire the town from some of the best views you can find. We suggest to bring some water with you, as it can be challenging to climb the stairs when it's very hot (the whole stairway is not covered and it's very hard to find repair from the sunrays).
Additional tip: if you have some spare energy we highly recommend a walk in the old town, which is located just 5 minutes away by walk. There you can rest, have a drink or a nice meal in a typical restaurant.

This is a great spot to walk up to and look back at the beach and promenade. It was pretty busy on the Saturday with people in fitness groups and walking groups but they moved on quickly enough. It’s not a far walk from Old Town and my five year old enjoyed the walk up so it’s not taxing by any stretch.

Strolling past the Opera down to the waterfront, back into old town crossing the flower market where you can sample some local street food and fruits before starting your walk up the hill.
We’d recommend walking up to castle hill through the old town and to come down on the sea side where the elevator is.
If you’re not good on foot the elevator is of course a good option upwards, too.

Climb up the hill, admire the greenery all around and the cute cut stone art laid on the steps. You see the white huge luxury yachts on the harbor and the blue blue sea. (August 2012)

We started to walk up as it seemed that the elevator was not functioning as it was already autumn. The hill was still greenish and there were nice plants to check. From time to time, people can stop and admire the view and for who speaks French, there are also small boards with interesting history and cultural information. We went till the top, there are nice sport for photos, either with the hill-space or with the town remaining at your feet. There is a nice waterfall up there and it is easily reached if you follow some signs. The funny thing is that, there in the dark, the administrators of this natura park were trying to help us and guide us back as they had to close soon.

This is a small, historic area of a ruined fortress - how we wish the fortress still existed! That said, the walking paths up the stairs by the "I LOVE NICE" sign on the east end of the Promenade are easy and quick, and take you up to the lovely cool waterfall and the terrace above it at the top. If you walk down to the port area, keep in mind it is easy to be waylaid and find yourself on narrow car roads without a way to get down to the port as the walking path has been closed for work. There is a small cafe at the top of castle hill with benches and a small park for kids. It's a lovely place with amazing views.

We walked up. It's not particularly difficult but there is a lift. We've been coming to Nice for years and never been up the hill, so I'm glad we did it. The waterfall is lovely and the cafe serves a cooling beer. There is more space at the top than I had imagined. Locals were playing a boule competion which was fun to watch for a bit. The views are of course, great.

As of Aug 2022 the Nice Fr website says the playground at the top of Castle Hill is closed for renovations for 2021. Are they back open yet?

Hi! My fiancé an I are planning a trip to Nice in May! How long should we plan to spend at Castle Hill including climbing the stairs, taking in the view of the city, and looking at the waterfall, descending the stairs, and/or anything else we may be missing with the experience?

Hi! I’d recommend 2-3hrs max to do it all. When you get back to the bottom, if you walk down the way past the graveyards I’d highly recommend wandering through all the little streets and shops, that was one of our favourite bits. Pop into LAC patisserie too if you get time!

You can’t you have to walk up the hill. You can go with an elevator by the beach side. It’s worth it.

As you face the Hôtel Suisse, its to the left - there is a doorway into a tunnel that leads to the lift. It is signposted, which helps as you cant see the actual lift from the road

I went to Castle Hill last week and made it to the top, but I didn’t see the waterfall. Is there a waterfall?

Google Cascade Du Casteu and you'll find it. It's basically on the west side of the top of the hill where the highest viewpoint is.
