About
The Marc Chagall national Museum, created during the artist's lifetime, houses the masterly cycle of the Biblical Message. It bears witness to the great diversity of the painter's artistic practices. Paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, ceramics as well as stained glass, tapestry and mosaics, constitute a unique body of work where technical virtuosity, colourful inventions and a universal message of peace are combined.

We enjoyed a rainy day experience at this museum. Much of the exhibits were closed to the public, but what we saw was really good stuff! Chagall's love of colors came through loud and clear. Because some of the museum was closed to the public the price of entrance was reduced to "free!" That made it even better!

We expected more from this museum as it was billed as THE Marc Chagall museum, with publicity saying that it has a large collection of his works. It doesn’t. It has a large collection of his religious stained glass windows.

These are truly stupendous.

However, there was virtually nothing about his life apart from a board as you entered, which we didn’t really notice as we were expecting more detail inside.

Why did he leave Russia? Why did he leave the USA?

We didn’t notice any of his actual paintings or sculptures.

There was a very interesting film in French and English showing how the stained glass windows were actually made, from design to finish. This was in a large room with just four small stools so most people had to stand.

The grounds were very calming, full of olive trees with a little café.

The museum doesn’t even have its own website and it was all a bit on the amateurish side.

It was a lovely walk up from the station with good views between the buildings but not sure it was worth it.

Such a wonderful museum. It’s not large and there is plenty of space inside to permit you to walk around and appreciate these beautiful works up close or from afar. Chagall was the maestro of color and the collection brings out the whimsy, pain, and poignancy of his creations. A perfect visit for a couple hours of provocative visual enjoyment. This collection is a feast for the eyes. On our recent visit, they were working on a new presentation for the stained glass pieces and these items were not available for viewing. C’est dommage.

Fantastic museum. Chagall is one of my favourite artists so it was definitely worth the 20 minute walk from Nice city-centre to get up close and personal with his works. The colour is incredible. It's such a relaxing experience. Also great to see information being given in English too on the works.
The building too is beautiful, there is a nice gift shop and a really peaceful garden café. The perfect way to while away an afternoon.

Surprisingly great art, really well displayed. The gift shop is also one of the better ones. And you can walk (though mostly up a modest slope) to the Matisse museum in about 20-25 minutes from here.

Nice museum. Horrible staff.
Not recommended for cyclists or people with standard size backpacks since they will try to tell you that a cycle helmet is the same as a motorcycle helmet with a visor (which is prohibited). Even if you put your helmet in your bag and make the bag fit into their test bag, they will insist on you emptying your bag once you're inside to waste your time some more.
Also, if you're a mature student, expect to have your student card refused.

Go to the Massena Museum, Leger, or the Renoir museum instead. The staff are far more polite and welcoming to visitors. And they won't hassle you for having work clothes or a cycling helmet in your bag.

Other museums WANT visitors.

Marc Chagall could teach the staff a thing or two.

This small museum packs a powerful punch with the largest collection of Marc Chagall art in the world. Honestly although I adore looking at those huge works of Chagall in Lincoln Center, I didn't especially fancy myself a Chagall devotee. Nonetheless, I wanted to go and now consider it a must when in Nice; my family members agree completely. We thought it was an absolute delight.

I understand the gallery is for Marc Chagall, but there is a limited amount of works here and half the space is empty.

Nice museum. ALL Chagall - which is interesting, but quite single-focused. The pieces I liked best were the outdoor mosaic and the details in the Garden of Eden. Stained glass in the auditorium was also a treat!
