- Philip CYork, Maine583 contributionsRussian Orthodox Church of Exquisite DesignTalk about exceeding expectations. The church is remarkable and, for once, we were smart (lucky) enough to accept a guided tour by an incredibly knowledgeable docent. Her ability to explain the sophisticated iconography took us to a new level of understanding. And the history of the unrealized tomb of the son of Tsar Alexander and the subsequent support of the monument as communist Russia essentially expunged the church was truly revealing. Not to be missed!Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 29, 2023
- nick wLondon, United Kingdom1,346 contributionsBeautiful Cathedral with Bonus Rabbits! We had expected the exterior and interior of this Cathedral near the train station to look spectacular. We had not expected to encounter two white lop-eared rabbits happily bouncing around in the grounds, despite the rain. They were delightful. Entrance to the Cathedral is free but if you want to walk beyond the rope barrier or see the small exhibition in the crypt there is a €5 per person cost. It does allow you to get a better view of the ornate interior though. The Cathedral is located quite close to the main train station.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023
- Gabriel HBurlingame, California29 contributionsA beautiful placeIt is a beautiful building. Great history of the Russian nobility who spent their winters in Nice… I remember older ladies. Obviously Russian aristocrats with their companions having afternoon yearly. That was in the late 60’s a must seeVisited October 2023Traveled soloWritten January 8, 2024
- Thomas VOakland, California18,889 contributionsBig and DecorativeThis is the biggest church in town and has a Russian design. It can be found in the 19th/20th Century part of town with some open space around it. Quite ornate, decorative inside, and worth a quick visit. If you are a believer, attend a service here for a special experience.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 6, 2024
- DejaZagreb, Croatia9 contributionsA piece of Russia on the RivieraStunning building.. very impressive… This was definitely on our to-do list and we weren’t disappointed. It is the property of the Russian Federation (the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate) and it was dedicated to the memory of Niholas Alexandrovich Tsarevich of Russia who died in Nice. The construction of the church was funded by his father, Nicholas II. After 1860, when the Nice region became French, the Russian aristocracy stayed in Nice. This led to important architectural heritage, because Russians built villas and buildings which still exist. I would definitely recommend you to visit the church, even with your young ones. Its green surroundings are home to white rabbits. There is a clean toilet if you need to refresh. Since we were in a hurry, we used Uber from Place Massena, which cost about 12 euros.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 11, 2024

Beautiful orthodox Russian church. Very photogenic and amazing looking building. It is very clean so not sure if it has been restored. Inside is very small but ornate with lots of gold artefacts.
I feel this church is actually too nice and pretty and looks in many ways like a Disneyland interpretation of a church and is disappointing in this respect. Definately still worth a visit as it is the best church I have seen in Nice out of the 3 cathedrals

Pretty, well decorated cathedral. There is a fee for the crypt as in many churches, but this is also the case here for a complete tour of the interior of the church, otherwise you have access to the entrance from where you can see most of it, but not all the details too bad. The reception was mixed, the person in charge explained to some people the subtleties of payment and what it brings, but not to us, we obviously weren't interested, so we left without paying and without having seen everything. The park is very nice, you can go around the cathedral, admire the colorful roofs and also enjoy all the rabbits that wander there.

The external architecture with onion shaped domes as well as interior religious decor of Orthodox churche's fascinates me and barring Russia have visited a few prominent Orthodox churches in Europe and Ethiopia. The St Nicholas cathedral( Russian Orthodox Church), consecrated in December 1912 in memory of Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsarevich of Russia, who died in Nice, was meant to serve the large Russian community that had settled in Nice by the end of the 19th century, as well as devout visitors from the imperial court of Russia. Tsar Nicholas II funded the construction work. The St Nicholas Russian Cathedral was impressive externally and tourists were allowed to enter the cathedral with photography being prohibited. This is the biggest Russian Orthodox church in Western Europe.

This place is magnificent. My girlfriend and I took the guided tour offered daily at 3pm (free with Riviera Pass otherwise €10, offered in English and French). The Sisters there were very nice and knowledgeable. The opulence of the interior is breathtaking, as is the exterior visage. It is a truly remarkable building and a must-see.
Very Impressed,

It is rather decentralized from the city center, but it is worth the visit. Very beautiful and large externally. There is a fee to visit the interior, but even just by staying on this side of the separating cord you have an excellent view of the interior which is small in size. Students do not pay for the ticket. In the outdoor park there are some free rabbits and games for children (bicycles, toy cars, etc.) to use freely. Visit to recommend

Viewed from the outside, the cathedral is very pretty and its architecture is superb. Once inside, it's a very different perception... The welcome is synonymous and not warm. We are told that with the free visit, we will not understand anything! We are therefore invited to pay 5€ per person to better understand... and visit a museum. Wow, what a museum!!! Finally, it is a film that explains to us that the Tsar is great and incredible! No point... Go your way! Save your 5€ for a beer;)

Yes, it’s true. When you walk to it and it comes in sight, you smile. It stands out. It is a lovely building, more outside than in. It’s impressive. I took many pictures and videos of the outside ( it’s verboten inside ). It looks bigger on the outside. When you do get inside, it’s pretty cozy and fairly pretty. It’s also somewhat elaborate, in the Russian orthodox style. If you are interested, you can spend 15-20 minutes examining the interior. Or you could walk in and out in 5 minutes or less as I saw a couple do. If you do visit Nice, I would highly recommend visiting here even though it’s a bit out of the way. It’s different than anything I have seen before and I always like seeing something new, particularly if it’s not merely new, but really special. Go.

The largest Russian congregation in Western Europe as wealthy Soviets went to Nicaea for vacations. 2 kilometers from the railway station. Unfortunately, I went in September around 19.00 and it was closed and I didn't catch it open.

Visually stunning to see from the outside, in an open space so you can also sit on park benches around the cathedral, I did this while having lunch.
Going inside was also good to see, very small compared to most cathedrals so you only need 10 minutes inside.
Located about 20 minute walk from main city area but easy to find.

kost het geld om naar binnen te gaan?

I see it opens at 10AM. If I want to come just to have pictures from the outside without actually entering it, is it open 24/7 ? I see in pictures there is a gate before the cathedral so wondered if also the gate only opens at 10 AM?

Is this part of the Church of Russia or is the head the Metropolitan outside Russia?

Apparently, it currently belongs to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate.

How is handicapped access to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral? My partner is an amputee that uses an electric cart. Can we walk from Promenade des Anglais to there without curb obstacles?
Written April 26, 2017
I have seen many people in a wheel chair around this area so I would say yes it is possible. Be aware of busier times for crowded space throughout the flower market on the earlier part of the day.

Bonjour Marie,

Bonne visite
