Be sure to catch the 09:29 train to Tende to take advantage of the free live commentary of the journey. The scenery is breathtaking (and if you're sat nearest the window, at times a little scary!). Travelling through a 360 degrees tunnel and then coming out of it to be able to see the entrance of the tunnel lower down... More

The automatic ticket machines are very confusing and defeated a few people. Maybe they don't expect visitors? It took coin but not paper money; credit cards not debit; then it refused my credit card. We went to a different machine that had a totally different look and feel but eventually took a credit card. We missed the train.

Just come back from Nice, was there for a week, we took the train des Merveilles, which had some lovely views and goes to Tende near the border of Italy, once in Tende we had some of the nicest food from the boulangerie, nicer than most things we'd eaten in nice, not that the food was bad in Nice just... We took the train from Nice to Tende (en route to Turino) having no idea that it had a commentary, or that the scenery would be so spectacular. In hindsight, it would have been worth splitting the trip in two and stopping off at one of the historical villages overnight. The mountains are beautiful, and the medieval villages offer spectacular... More

The two hour train ride from Nice France to Tende in the Alps presents you with astounding feats of engineering and spectacular mountain scenery. In some coaches on the daily 9:23 AM train to Tende from Nice there is an excellent running commentary that is optional. No commentary on the return for other trains. The construction of the tunnels, bridges,... More

Two days ago we took the Train des Merveilles to Tende. The scenery is beautiful and you can stop off at the many historical villages on the way or for hiking if you have the time. Tende is a beautiful village high up in the mountains. They have a great historical museum which is a must do. The information centre... More

The train des Merveilles is a great day out - except that on my Sunday-only trip it poured with rain. Nevertheless, there were great sights on offer - deep valleys with rushing rivers, small towns hanging off steep cliffs and tucked into unexpected valleys. There was an informative commentary throughout the trip up. Later in the season there are more... More

The Zou pass is only available in the high season (June to September), we bought a family pass (Pass Isobelle - 35E) which worked out slightly cheaper than the full fare for two adults. You also get this from the Zou office near the car hire places. On our train (May) the commentary was only in the back half of... More

I made the journey in April, when the organised tour was not running. There are regular SNCF trains that run to Tende and return. If you want to be clever you can alight before Tende and take a return train from Breil-sur-Roya on an Italian train to Ventimiglia and then the frequent coastal train back to Nice. You need to...
