Eglise Notre Dame d'Esperance stands over Cannes as is a very visible landmark. We happened by on Easter Sunday as the crowds were gathering for mass. The best views of Cannes are from the courtyard.

The church was built between 1521 and 1627 and is the oldest church in Cannes.
There is an interesting side chapel dedicated to the community of fishermen and their families with model fishing boats and intricate carvings. The magnificent nativity scene which, for 1 Euro will be illuminated and the models ‘come to life’. As well as the stable and crib it depicts the workers going about their everyday tasks, the blacksmith, the baker, the women washing at the stream etc., it’s a splendid sight.

The views from outside the church are stunning. Also visit worth a visit is the Museum and climb the tower for even more spectacular views.

It’s a 10-minute walk from the beach - take the gradual path (off Rue Felix Faure junction with Rue Georges Clemenceau to Rue Saint-Antoine, Rue du Suquet, Traverse de la Tour) to the panoramic lookout point which passes shops and restaurants. On the way down walk down the many steps which end near the bus station (Gare Routier) whose office building has a beautiful mural above the entrance, or take Rue Mont Chevalier and walk past the prison where the Man in the Iron Mask was kept briefly kept prisoner.

This church is nice but the view from the hill which it sits on is the real draw. Stunning views of the beach and harbour can be had from the walls of this church. Enjoy the tiny shops on the easy walk up Le Suquet to get to this spot. The walk is not challenging at all.

We took a visit on the tourist train, always a good way of seeing things you may otherwise not. The bonus was it took us up the hill and let us out for 10 minutes to wander. We ended up staying longer and walking back because the cathedral alone was worth more than 10 mins. A lovely place of worship at the top of the hill, so pleased we got to unexpectedly stop there. There was a viewing platform which gave a brilliant view over Cannes. Go visit, if need be get the tourist train, it's an hours trip and the drive up the hill was worth it alone.

We visited here twice withing a week: the first time was by ascent of Escalier de la Tour passing the Musee de la Castre - which was quite hard going following our walk around Ile Ste Marguerite an hour or two earlier.

The second time was by the 'Little Train' which climbs up the Suquet and waits for about ten minutes giving chances for photos and visiting the Eglise.

This time, and being a little cold in the breeze, we went in, I lit a candle [suggested donation of €1.50] and then walked around the inside.

The nativity play is quite a large masterpiece in itself: worth a look.

Nice cathedral, with superb views of the city from the area just outside. Nice garden area just below.

Perhaps the biggest attraction of Old Cannes, the Eglise Notre Dame d'Esperance also provides a vista of Cannes, its harbor, the Promenade of Croisette and its beaches. A very worthwhile place to visit.

This church is on a hilltop in the old part of Cannes. We went here on "le petit train" which stops here for 10 minutes. The old church has a very musty smell on hot days. The views of old Cannes and the waterfront are very good though!

The Notre Dame interior is a worthwhile visit especially the area in and around the grounds. There are great scenic views from the various lookout points. A very enjoyable area.

It's a steep trek up through the old town to this rather sombre church with its landmark clock tower.
