There is not an alley, road or building that is not picture perfect. Everywhere you look you see postcard beautiful buildings, flowers and vines. It is just so lovely and quaint and visually perfect. It felt peaceful and a step back in time. Took over 100 photos. It was one of the European highlights for me. Far, far better than commercial Eze ! you must go see it!

If you like history and art, this is an easy day trip from Nice. Take a quick and cheap commuter train ride from Nice central train station to Cagnes-sur-Mer. Follow the signs to Renoir's home and studio; this is a lovely site with family photos, Renoir paintings, and beautiful garden views of Haut de Cagnes. Then walk down the hill to a free bus shuttle up to Haut de Cagnes, a medieval village with gorgeous views of hills and sea. Stop at the Chateau Grimaldi; you may or may not like the art, but some of the rooms have beautifully preserved tromp l'oeil ceilings. Follow the stairs up to the rooftop for 360 degree views of the area. Then amble around the town; it is small enough to cover on foot and very picturesque. The downhill walk back to the train station is easy.

Hidden gem near Nice. Never expected to find a medieval village hidden in the midst of all the tourism. It is quiet, beautiful, and well worth a visit. No garish shops. Locals live here. Ther is a lovely square surrounded by cafes. The views are spectacular and there are many great restaurants. We stayed in the village for 5 days and wished we could have stayed longer. We learned the hard way that cars do not belong in medieval villages; alleys too narrow and limited parking. Take the fee shuttle #44 from the town below.

We stopped off here early one morning on our way north from Cagnes-sur-Mer, to explore the mountainous country of the Alpes Maritime. There are so many lovely, quiet little hill towns in this region, that you can come to expect excellence - and Haut de Cagnes does not disappoint. Pretty winding stone alleys, immaculately clean, lovely views - as we were quite early, the castle was not open, but the village is well worth a visit. There is a small, convenient car park at the foot of some steps, where we managed to find a space.

A beautiful, unspoilt and generally untouristy medieval village. Definitely worth a visit but give the modern town directly below it a big miss. The beach promenade is nice, but a little inaccessible from Haut Cagnes, requiring two changes of bus. Haut Cagnes village is definitely worth a visit, but you can see it in one day easily. The restaurants are quite expensive, but the view is awesome.....so I guess it balances out. There is a free shuttle bus from the bus station below the high village, and if I'm honest I would say that the whole "middle" region between the high village and the sea is unattractive and unpleasant. Stick to the beach or the medieval village is my suggestion.

We were staying at Antibes, and we visited Cagnes. Whilst down at the seafront, we could see a castle up on a hill in the distance. We later saw brown signs for Haut de Cagnes, so we decided to take a drive up there. As you get closer the street become narrower, and steeper :-) just before your reach the castle, there was an unexpected underground car park. Unfortunately the height limit was too low for our car, so we had to continue our drive upwards.
There was very limited parking at the top, but we managed to squeeze our car into a spot. A little walk, and we were in a little square with petanque pits and a couple of restaurant/bars. The views were great.
We took a little walk around the castle and surrounding streets. There's not much to do other than partaking in a quick "biere", but it is well worth the drive.
Just for drivers of larger vehicles, we drive an Hyundai i800 which is 1.95m high. I can't remember what the height limit was of the underground car park, but I believe it was in the region of 1.8m.
Thanks for reading

I agree this is a gem of a little village. I wouldn't go as far as some posts that say this is their favorite spot on Earth. (For those people, I'd suggest you go to a place like Bruges and you will feel like you stepped right into a fairy tale!).
It's a beautifully little village but it's very small. It doesn't take a long time to walk through it. Some of the views are really great to the city below and in some parts you can see the ocean in the yonder.
Driving up (if you have a rental car) it won't be difficult as there are tons of signs leading you into the direction. Follow the brown signs that say "Haut de Cagnes". Part of the path up the road is very windy and small roads. At the top, there is a parking building. A bit different as you pull in and turn off your car and leave the keys and it takes your car to the basement. €1.30 per hour.
There are several bars and restaurants at the top near the Castle. Nothing special type places that look touristy but a good spot to grab a bite to eat or grab a drink.
We went about 7 PM when it was still very bright here (as it stays sunny even until after 9:30 PM during the summer). The only downside is there were lots of mosquitos. I got bitten about 5 times so if you're prone to mosquitos maybe go during the day.
Definitely it's worth going to if you're already in the Riviera and want to see something different. But if you have already gone to a place like Bruges, it won't feel like anything too special.

This is my favourite perched village to holiday in each year. It is like going back in time and not as commercial / touristy as others. The free shuttle from Square Bourdet #44 runs about every 20 minutes, making access easy. There is usually at least two restaurants open during the quiet winter months and offering good meals. This location is an excellent jumping off point to do day trips to many interesting places. I have used rivierabreakaway.com for my accommodations the last four years with much success. Staying longer than a week? Ask for a longer stay rate.
Its like going back in time when you explore all the narrow streets. The chateau Grimaldi is the jewel in the crown here. All you need is just at the bottom of the hill closely. Wear comfy shoes with support due to hills and cobblestones.

If you want nightclubs and bling-bling, go somewhere else. If you want to experience medieval happiness and exquisite food, come here. Even off-season you may choose between several top restaurants first class meals, and the sights are stunning at every corner. Don't bring a car unless you have to. There is a free bus service every 15 minutes from the down-town bus depot.

This very pretty medieval village has many enjoyable restaurants (although few serve lunch in the fall), lovely views and the Grimaldi Chateau. The streets are very steep but well maintained. If you are driving, pay close attention to street signs on your way to the AutoParking garage. One wrong turn and you suddenly find yourself negotiating the ancient narrow streets. It's not as exhilarating as it seems in the movies...

Not within walking distance. If you mean Polygone Riviera you will need to get a bus from Cagnes sur mer. There is a free bus from Haut de Cagnes into Cagnes sur mer. Hope this helps. By the way there is a shopping mall in St Laurent de Var in the way into Nice.

bonjour!
je ne comprend pas votre question! si c'est pour un restaurant ou bien pour se promener en ville dans le quartier du haut de cagnes?

I have heard that there is a shuttle bus to Haut de Cagnes. If so, where does it leave from? We will be staying in Hotel Chantilly, not far from the Station.

The No 44 free shuttle bus runs up to the village every 15 mins from the town centre at Square Bourdet (central bus station).
Search "Square Bourdet" in google maps. The bus will go from the stop at Allée des Platanes side.

I am very curious. I inherited some silk scarfs from my aunt that have signatures on them: Marouchka (a symbol) and then Haut-de-Cagnes. I wonder if these came from a local shop? Or artist? I tried looking them up on-line and could only find a picture of a pillow in a very similar pattern to one of the scarfs. I hope you can help as I have no one left on that side of my family.

I read your messages and I can answer your question. I had an art program in southerm France and in NIce, sponsored by the University of Windsor in Canada. Every summer, I would take my students to have lunch at a restaurant on the place by the castle. In a small street, there was Marouchka's boutique. I fell in love with one of her scarves and bought one on the spot. It is a marvellous piece of silk with a yellow rooster.Superb. I just looked and found it in my drawers, brand new. Marouchka was a very beautiful woman who talked with a very feminine voice, and, honestly I fell for her. She told me that she had been a model, and lover of Modigliani in her youth and I believed her. I think she was Russian born. Jean-Pierre de Villers, University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada

Interesting. I stayed for a week in Haut de Cagnes a couple of years ago. There was only one shop in the perched village itself. a boutique selling clothes and gifts as I remember. Might it be from there? The boutique was right by the castle.
