If at all possible, avoid the motorway and spend an hour or two longer, taking this route, you will be grateful for it, I promise! It’s absolutely stunning and the traffic won’t be an issue. If you want to turn it up again into something really fantastic, drive along to the sounds of Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony, it gives inspiration a new meaning!

We spent 2 days traveling the Route de Napolean. Stunning. Gorgeous views from Grenoble to the Mediterranean.
My favorite part was the Route de Souvenir Francaise. Old, old narrow sections weaving the gorges and cliffs, many 1 lane sections are exciting.

If you are a car fan and love driving this road just has to be driven. We started at the Grenoble end and worked our way to the coast at Cannes . There can't be a better way to arrive at the Cote d Azure . Every mile of the route takes you through the most stunning scenery and the road is very good quality free from pot holes and the twists and climbs make for a very memorable days driving. Do it you'll love it.

We flew into Nice and hired a car. Loved Nice, Cannes not so much. Drove along very good roads to Grasse which had a lovely old town to wander in, but didn't look so good for a stopover. Fabulous scenery as we drove on to Castellane the first night and stayed in the Nouvel Hotel De Commerce, highly recommended as is dinner at La Voute.
Drove the Canyon de Verdon the next day and this was definitely the best part of the trip - do not be tempted to bypass it. We spent 8 hours there and then drove on expecting to stay in Digne-Les-Bains, but we did not like the town, so carried on to Chateau Arnoux, where we really should not have stopped as the hotel was awful (although there was an option of a chateau hotel at €290!). Views all along the way are fantastic.
Drove into Sisteron for breakfast, a really lovely town with lots of streets to wander through. Then on into Gap that did not warrant a stop, before having lunch at La Poste in Corps, nice restaurant, but not a lot to the town. Again, the views are brilliant everywhere and we never tired of the mountains.
On our way to Vizille and Grenoble, we stopped for a drink at the Grand Lac de Laffrey, a lovely spot in a very sunny day, so much so that we stayed the night at the lakeside hotel, very relaxing.
On into Grenoble as the views start to decline.
I would highly recommend this route to anyone who enjoys mountain scenery, we had expected difficult mountain roads, but it was all in very good condition and not a difficult drive.

We wanted to avoid the expensive tolls as we drove to Cote d'azure and got a recommendation for this route. It was dramatic, stunning, and 100% worth whatever extra time it took! Truly, the journey was as great as the destination.

We drove the Route Napoleon from Grenoble to Grasse on a clear sunny afternoon. What a stunning drive. Filled with many climbs, mild switchbacks, breath taking views, tiny villages... this drive has it all. Not quite as demanding as the roads we travelled in the Vecors the day previous, but an absolutely exhilarating drive from start to finish. Plan on 8 hours easily as this is a drive not to be taken quickly and meant to be savoured and photographed. Highest possible recommendation.

Is a very tiny hamlet, just 12 km from Grasse and is the first stop along the Route Napoleon. Its set on a high plateau, overlooked by the high hills. it began as a Roman stronghold and contains a Romanesque church dating back to 12th century. St. Vallier has a great picnic park and play area for your kids. For the adults, charcuterie, bakery ,deli hotels and gas stations.
Now you start climbing up the Route napoleon.

This was the third time I've traveled this route and this time I did it with my husband and our adult daughter. We wanted to share with her the beauty of the route (as we remembered it from 29 years ago :-) ) and the great places we ate at along the way. We were not disappointed. The road is still scenic, taking you through some of the most beautiful French countryside. Many of the small towns along the way remained the same, but many have grown, too. It was good to have a navigation system on our rental car because the route is not as clearly marked as it once was. This is a trip I recommend to everyone I know that intends to visit Europe...it is so worth it! And if you travel this route, be sure to stop at the Hotel de la Poste in Corps for a meal. It will be a memory of a lifetime!

We did a little bit of it on the way to Nice and it was spectacular. The views of the mountains, gorges and valleys are mind blowing, I just wish there had been more places to safely stop and take photos. The road is sealed, good condition but it a very winding road.

This road is amazing, typical mountain road with lovely villages to pass through, i suggest you visit the Verdon Gorge which is about 30 minutes from Castellane, you will not be disappointed.

We intend to drive this route in September after staying in Bormes-Les-Mimosas, about an hour from Cannes, so will be travelling North. Any ideas about which towns to stopover, good hotels, great restaurants, detours worth making? We have five nights before we catch an afternoon ferry from Calais to Dover so we can concentrate a good 3 days into the Cannes - Grenoble stretch.
Many thanks,
David.

Bonjour,
J'envisage de prendre la route Napoleon la semaine prochaine.
Conseillez-vous des pneus neige en cette saison, ou est-elle, ainsi que les jolis villages qu'elle traverse, suffisamment déneigée ,
Merci d'avance pour votre réponse
