Extraordinary collection of religious paintings especially from the nativity and Jesus’s later life. The depictions of Jesus evolved over the centuries covered and I loved spending time here. Best of all, we were admitted free.

The museum is medium size by American standards. The collection on display is mostly religious art of the Middle Ages and a few from the early Renaissance. It is free to visit. Try to go early in the day to avoid crowds.

This museum is a hidden gem, both for the building itself and for the numerous paintings of the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance in it, including one by Botticelli and others from his school. I recommend seeing him. It is also free and in the same square as the palace of the Popes

I was unpleasantly surprised to find that only part of the collection can be visited because there are not enough staff to supervise visitors. I've never seen that. Could we imagine the Louvre depriving you of its great gallery when here Boticelli and Carpaccio are thus made invisible?

Very high quality collection. Drastically higher level than at Musee Calvet. Unfortunately, even here almost .only French labels or explanations. It's a shame. English should already be possible. The museum has potential.

I only had time to see Botticelli's 4 paintings in Room 10. Rushed for time, I asked one of the gallery assistants to show me where Room 10 was and she took me there directly which was so appreciated! This room would not have been too easily found by myself and I would have been distracted by all of the other beautiful paintings in the art gallery. Botticelli's paintings were small, not wall sized. One could get very close up to view these paintings. I could see his outline of the figures which were then filled in, the facial detail, brush strokes on the garments. There were 2 of his Madonna and Child paintings on the wall. This art gallery is free so definitely worthwhile for just a short visit for tourists with limited time in Avignon. This art gallery is located at the end of the square - Place de Palace - with the entrance on the square.

Although this museum is free, most of the rooms/works of art were closed off. Thankfully I did get to see Botticelli’s Madonna & Child, but whereas I’d normally spend a good couple of hours in an art gallery, I was done in less than half an hour.

I was also looking forward to enjoying a coffee in the courtyard, but the café was closed and it looked like they were renovating or getting rid of it!

The museum is really not related to the Papal Palace although it is riich in Renaissance art. Definitely worth a visit for the museum lover as there are several unique pieces. Anytime a collection has a Giotti or two, it's the real deal!

We went to the petit museum expecting to spend a couple of hours. As it turned out we spent about 15 minutes, as there were two rooms open with a very few paintings to show. It was a big disappointment. It's a good thing it was a free entry museum or I would have been more upset! But the museum building itself was gorgeous!!!

An excellent exhibition of Italian (Siennese, Luccan, Pistoian, Florentine) gothic and early renaissance paintings along with a few outstanding medieval sculptures. Beautiful old ceilings in a few rooms. At the end, very well executed series of Florentine renaissance "Theseus" series on the topic of mythical heroes (Phaeton, etc). Also, there is a very nice quiet courtyard cafe.

Lovely, quiet museum, less physically taxing than the Pope's Palace. Beautiful collection of gothic and early Renaissance art, naturally heavy on Christian themes. If you are seriously interested in this period, it is a great collection for comparing iconography (how various symbols and themes are portrayed among all the paintings). The cafe was closed.

The building is very nice, and during the evenings when the Helios lights and sound show us on, it's truly amazing (it was our favourite part of Helios show, when to see it 3 times).
There are works in the museum, and only part of it can be visited. Main focus on religious pieces of art, combined with some modern works. Interesting combination, although I found it a bit too strange. My daugther (8) lost interest pretty quickly. The visit was free, and the staff very nice. All in all, a nice visit.

It's free!

Hot walk across a concrete square to a museum of early art. All focused on early Christianity. Not everyone's cup of tea. Other galleries worth viewing a few minutes away. Plus much of the building closed off.

Only a stone's throw from the Palais des Papes, this houses a collection of mainly mediaeval paintings and sculptures from the surrounding area in a historic building. It's quiet - no Chinese portfolio freaks here! - and, best of all, there's a bijou tea room in a walled garden where a tired tourist can simply enjoy being on holiday, with nowhere they need to go and nothing they need to do except enjoy the peace and the birdsong - bliss!

When you get done with the Pope's palace, walk next door to this museum. It's small but the collection is very well curated and it's free!

Very interesting to see some of the other artwork available that used to adorn the palace and wonder at the artistry of so long ago.
