I am happy we took a guided tour of the Camargue because the guide was very informative. He bought us to pet the white horses of Camargue. He explained the differences between Camargue and Spanish bulls. Took us to a small village on the sea called St. Marie and finally we went to observe the flamingos ... All of this in about 4 hours.

This lovely French National Park has sights of wild horses, fauna, coypus, and birds. But nothing beats the 1000s of Flamingos. L mating and chattering and just having a grand old time. F

Of course you can pay to go horse riding and visit private nature reserves to see the other animals - but this may not be necessary. We drove to Les Saintes-Maries de la Mer and then around the lagoons. There are frequent stopping places and hides where we saw flamingoes, wild white horses and not so wild black bulls. Of course you may not get close to them but at least you will have the satisfaction of finding them yourself. There are also plenty of areas to walk but the driving tour can easily be done in half a day on quiet roads.

We had never heard of wild horses in France. The Camargue Reserve which is the Rhone River delta area is fascinating and our visit there was the highlight of my trip to Arles. We saw the the wild, white horses, the black bulls raised for bullfighting, and hundreds of flamingos. The area is also known for rice growing and salt marshes. We had a wonderful lunch of the Camargue red rice at a little open air restaurant in the town of St. Bertrand. You will need to rent a car or take a tour of the Camargue... I am not sure if there is bus service to the area... there aren't very many people living in the area.

What can we add to the stupendous reviews of this magnificent park?
We’ve itemised a few specific things we did and places we visited in other reviews here but do try to get off the beaten track. If there’s a narrow road, take it. We did just that, driving down to St-Maries-de-la-Mer and found a lovely free ferry near Le Petit Sauvage with a bar next door. Leave the road down to Salin de Giraud and head along small roads to Etang du Fangassier and the Tourvieille Ruins.
We just didn’t understand why you’d choose to go on a 4x4 ‘safari’ – what’s that about? It’s not Africa! There are no hills or bushes! We saw them all the time, just stopping by the side of the road to view things from a distance so it could be ticked off.
Segways were an even more astounding choice as you have to trek in a line and only on pavement! See the park from a horse or a bike or just use your own car – ours is a regular hatchback not an SUV.
You’ll love it!

Before our trip I was reading about the flamingoes only arriving in May. Now I am no expert on the pink bird but we visited on 22 March and must have seen about 500 of them and we did not go to the bird park!
The lady at our B&B said we should go to a certain pond where they breed. We drove there, on a small road towards Salin de Giraud and turned onto D36c. We parked the car and walked on the path from where we saw plenty of flamingoes. We then drove further on the small road which follows the water closely, towards Villeneuve. Again we saw lots of birds, even close by.
We had lunch at Aiges Mortes, visited Saintes Marie's sur Mer. From there we drove back to Arles via Cacharel where we saw more flamingoes.
It was a lovely day out. We also saw plenty of wild horses, buzzards, a hoopoe and other birds. There were hardly any people around and it was just wonderful.

We spent a lovely day in the Camargue during a short trip to Arles. We only did a small part of the nature reserve, but if you are a keen cyclist/hiker you could easily spend 2-3 days exploring the many paths around a huge area.
We started at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer and had a boat cruise up part of the river to see some of the bird life along the edge of the river. We also saw a traditional Camargue cowboy with some of his herd of white horses and bulls.
We went for a bit of a drive afterwards, ound to the east - it's easy to find the flocks of flamingoes round here.
In summer it does get very hot, so take adequate protection. And the main problem in the Camargue, as anyone will tell you, is the amount of mosquitoes and biting insects!! You really will get bitten to death, so take a good repellent with you.

The Camargue is a delta straddled between the Mediterranean Sea and two arms of the Rhone. It's a natural reserve, and feels uniquely different from anything we’ve seen or visited in France.
We spent half a day exploring this region by car from Arles. We took the D36 down to Salin de Giraud, where there's an observation deck for the salt pans.
The Plage de Piemanson, is a short drive from here, and the long stretch of sand seemed to stretch infinitely.
We then drove the road circling around the lagoon - the Etang du Vaccares - where we frequently sighted flamingos in the wetlands around La Capiliere.
We saw many rice fields, horses and bull farms in the area round Domaine Mejan.
We passed by the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau (needs a few patient hours, we didnt go) but spotted a heron along a watercourse, just off the road.
Our final stop was Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer with a nice stretch of beach and a quaint old town centre. We finished in Aigues-Mortes.

We ended up spending two days in the Camargue. We were there in January so we had to wear long underwear but there were no mosquitoes. My kids LOVED playing at the beach in Sts. Maries des la Mer (and eating churros and french fries there), loved the flamingos at the Bird Park (6-8 Euros admission, 1-3 hours), and LOVED LOVED LOVED riding horses (25 Euro for 1.5 hour ride). Highly recommended, especially for family's that need places for kids to roam, climb, and basically blow off steam (especially after visiting a high stress city like Paris.)

Hi will be visiting Nimes in early June and grateful for any advice on trips to the Camargue or is it best to hire a car ?
We are keen birders but would also love to see the wild horses if they still exist.
Many thanks

Buonasera ,

The beach from Salin de Giraud is a paradise for dogs. Just miles of sand and dunes. However, there is nothing else there. No bars, rstaurants, sunbeds or loos which is what makes it such a paradise. Good road down almost to water's edge.
Saints Mairies de la Mare on the otherhand, is a nightmare with a dog!

Hello! We are driving to the Camargue from Arles and will be birding and such. Did you take the little train that goes to the salt hills and the pink lake?? I would very much like to do that but cannot seem to figure out where it is exactly, or how to get tickets. Can you tell me, if you took the train, where it is? Thanks very much.

Hello,
Yes there are oganized 4X4 tours which can take you to less accesible areas. What I prefer is the park Orninthologique: tehy mage to gather there most animals and plants of the area. It Takes about two hours to visit and there are many information and interesting facts available all around.
