We were pleasantly surprised and pleased with this exhibition. The city of Arles has "mined" its river and the resulting artifacts ( Roman as well as pre Roman ) which it displays are well laid out and in large open spaces which make the displays easy to see and appreciate. The restored ship taken which sank centuries ago is worth the visit... Excellent museum. The restored Roman barge from beneath the Rhone River is worth the trip. Excellent collection of ancient mosaics. The sarcophagi are impressive.

This museum helps you to build on your understanding of Roman antiquities in and around Arles. For example we had stumbled upon a Roman acqueduct close to Fontvieille, the ruins of which puzzled us but thanks to a model in the museum, showed us that it had actually powered a flour mill. The Roman barge mentioned by other reviewers is... More

The highlight was the Roman barge found in the mud of the Rhone but everything is beautifully displayed and all very interesting. Aesthetically the mosaic floors take a lot of beating.

From the outside the museum looks horrible. But on the inside it's got a wealth of exhibits. It's wonderful if you want to understand Arle's heritage and it's connection to the ancient world. Nice space.

I'm so glad I didn't miss this - astonishing display of Roman-era relics, with two stand-out pieces: A Bust of (probably) Julius Caesar, and a recovered 31-meter (100 ft.) long barge, recently (2006?) recovered from the bottom of the river. The museum isn't especially EASY to drive to, but it can be done! Some free parking outside, a good walk... More

From the outside it looks like an unfinished IKEA - the worst illegitimate son of Pompidou Centre imaginable. But once inside, what a wonderful space! And a space filled with superb Roman artefacts magnificently and spaciously displayed to set off their full aesthetic impact. We were bowled over by statues, mosaics, artefacts of daily life and above all the superb... More

I love Romans and was looking forward to this visit, but found elements of the museum disappointing. Mostly, because they'd allowed a graphic designer to give them dark gray text on a gray background. Tres chic but very unreadable. In addition, for a museum of such importance, little effort was made to provide multi-language explanations. Arles has an incredibly rich... More

For a relatively small town this is a very impressive museum. It has some wonderful displays of mosaic, pottery, statues and a wooden boat. Entry to this was part of our multi-site tickets

About a 20-minute walk from the walls of the city proper, in a kind of no man's land, this monumental structure houses some of the most interesting and beautiful pieces from the region's pagan Roman and early Christian history. Not to be missed are the mosaics and early Christian sarcophagi. Definitely worth visiting for a couple of hours when you... More
