A superb museum focussing on the early history of Arles, particularly the Roman period. There are some stunning exhibits displayed in spacious areas, particularly the Roman boat discovered in the river Rhone. The subsequent excavation and preservation of the boat is documented in a short film, which runs continuously with English subtitles. It is a pity that there are few English... More

We really enjoyed this museum; interesting artifacts from the history of the area. There is a Roman boat on display that had been under the river, and many other interesting exhibits.

This antiquity museum opened a few years ago transports visitors back in time with the help of antique artifacts excavated in the region of Arles. From prehistoric times to the Golden age of the Roman occupation. You will find several astonishing exhibits; the highlight consisting of a restored Roman barge found in the Rhône. Entrance fees are very reasonable it... More

Very well executed museum showing life in Roman Gaul. The various models are excellently crafted, showing flour mills, the arena and its construction, daily life, and more. I had never seen Roman lead water pipes before...how modern they looked! A rather large cargo barge recovered from the Rhone is on display, along with typical cargoes of tin, copper, stones, amphoras,... More

This one floor Museum of Ancient Arles provides a modern presentation for its collection, with artifacts organized into several periods including Arles before the Roman conquest; the Roman era, reviewed from several perspectives; and Arles in the Christian World. The highlight of the museum, however, is the Greco-Roman barge and associated amphora and other artifacts discovered in the Rhone river... More

This was a great museum. We walked to and from the city centre. There is also a free bus that stops at the entrance. The majority of the descriptions were in French and very little was in English. One of my favorite aspect of the museum was all the dioramas. You can actually see what the Ampitheatre and Theatre Antique... More

The museum is great and the found and restored Roman boat is breathtaking! Overall the museum is wonderful and organized fairly well. It could be a little larger, but that's a compliment to the interest of the items contained within. The outside garden area, which is free, is a joy. Many children were playing and having fun as there are... More

This is a great display of artifacts particularly from the roman period. The large commercial ship lifted from mud of the rhone river is spectacular; not too much english but enough to make it worth a visit.

A modern, light-filled building, housing a large and wonderful display of Roman artifacts excavated from the silt at the bottom of the river. Most impressive is a restored preserved Roman barge, with an excellent video (with English subtitles), describing the intensive salvage process. Outside are lovely gardens on the site of the old Roman Circus.

I agree with all previous positive reviews. Our stop was part of a bike tour and we didn't have too long in the museum. What we saw was well presented and documented. The age and complexity of the roman sculpture and the boat are so interesting. Amazing what they could create with none of our modern tools Would have liked... More
