The mossy fountain on the Cours Mirabeau isn't particularly beautiful in the traditional sense like it's distant cousin the Fountaine de La Rotonde further down the boulevard. But it is interesting and unique in a historical sense. Over 350 years old, the fountain is really nothing more than a large green ball of moss with water slowly trickling out...but it is calming and reassuring in its consistency and presence.

One can't missing it while walking the Cours Mirabeau...nor should you!!

We arrived at the fountain early in the morning and were just totally blown away by its awesome beauty. We arranged our chairs on the pavement and the first few hours passed in the blink of an eye. At 10 am we paused for coffee and returned to find that our chairs had been removed while we were away. My son purchased four more and we continued our vigil admiring the way the little streams of water trickled down the mossy surface.

Foolishly we left our new chairs there while we went for lunch and when we returned, they also had gone. Second son went to purchase some replacements. Unfortunately, he is totally colour blind and only sees in black & white. All four chairs were bright pink and as we continued our vigil there were some sniggers from other visitors at the design and colour of our seating arrangement.

At 4 pm we risked leaving our chairs again, assuming that nobody in their right mind would nick our pink apparitions. We descended on the Hagen Dazzzz ice cream parlour and were relieved of 60 Euros in exchange for some fairly exotic ices.

Shock - horror! Our pink chairs had been taken! This was too much and we protested by sitting on the pavement for our final few hours at the fountain. This proved to be most beneficial as passers by assumed we were homeless and living on the streets and started donating Euros. By the time we departed for our ten bedroom villa we had actually made a profit on the day!

Tomorrow the Hotel de Ville!

The fountain had some moss; it was mostly foliage. At first we were extremely disappointed by this. However upon reflection we decided that the foliage fountain was quite charming. We will tell everybody at home about this ill-named fountain: our accidental highlight.

It`s a fountain, it`s covered in moss and it`s in the middle of the street. I don`t even know why I am reviewing it. Just because that`s what I do I suppose. Glance at it by all means, but don`t get over excited. Sorry.

It's a fountain of moss, who can complain? It's free, and it's mossy. If you're a fan of bryophyte so would highly recommend this fountain.

It is said the water of this fountain stays at 18 degrees, if you come in winter you can touch and feel the warm temperature and see vapour come out.

The Cours Mirabeau is one of the main "drag `em in" places for bars and restaurants (and as such, a bit on the pricey side) but is a popular hot spot for street entertainers and frequent markets. The fountain is very popular with the local pigeon population.

The city, as with most towns and surrounding villages are famous for their variety of fountains and crystalline waters. This one is exceptional as it is fed by warm waters and hence its abundant growth.

In the middle of a busy tourist area sits an unusual moss covered fountain. With the help of a local guide we discovered it's history as a watering spot for sheep being driven from summer to winter pastures. Though smaller than its original size, the remaining fountain is a quaint reminder of the importance of local agriculture and farming.

Ok. It's kind of cool in the sense that this fountain has been standing there for so many years and that its powered by the natural hot spring sitting underneath this fountain. Other then that it's completely ordinary. If I didn't know this fountain is famous I would just pass it by and not give it a second look. I guess you can check it out if you are passing it by but certainly do not go out of your way to see it.
