Place Albertas is a small square in the center of Aix-en-Provence. It was created in 1745 - 1746 on a private initiative. Marquis Henri d'Albertas bought private houses on this site and demolished them, and his son built a small square on this site.

This place is beautiful when finished, but I expect it will be under construction the rest of the year. So be warned when you intend to visit.

This square and the surrounding buildings were built for the d'Albertas family in the first half of the 18th century to the plan of a Parisian model of royal palaces. To achieve this end the family purchased a number of adjoining properties surrounding theirs and had them demolished. The family's houses were then built with uniform facades that had wrought iron balconies in front of the large windows with a cobblestone square in front.
A fountain was erected in the square in 1862 but was then replaced, in 1912, with the current structure which has a circular pond which catches the water flowing from a large metal bowl that sits on top of a pedestal. It is difficult to see if there is anything sculpted onto the bowl or pedestal as it is largely covered in moss.

This is the most beautiful of all the fountains in the Old Town of Aix en Provence. It was created relatively recently (1912), to complement the attractive rococo square that bears the same name. This is a popular place for locals to sit in the shade and chat with their friends.

Place d'Albertas is one of the small scale square with a fountain in the Old Town. Nice architectural buildings surrounding the fountain are having iron balconies. You will not miss this spot when you stroll around the area.

Place d'Albertas, with one of "1000" fountains in the center of Aix-en-Provence. The Fountain was placed in this square in 1862.

This is a small square with a fountain in its midst. I didn't notice at the time, but in researching on the web about Place d'Albertas, there is much discussion about the iron balconies having a phallic symbol design.
