We were disappointed with the management of the hotel. Things are not coordinated and not properly thought through.

1. Having been asked what time we would arrive (2pm) and arriving at that time, we were informed check in was 3pm. (Why not tell us 2pm would not be possible?). We waited until 3pm, but then had to wait another 45 minutes before the room was ready. This all after a long drive. No refreshments offered. Nothing…

2. There was no offer to help unload our bags from the car or carry them up to our room (3 flights of stairs)

3. On our first day, we left the hotel to go to Aix at about 10.30 am. We got back after 3 pm. Our room had not been touched. The cleaner walked in, unannounced at about 3.30pm

4. Crying baby nearby to our room at 11.30pm

For the price we paid for a family suite, and the meals we had at the restaurant (good food + service, but not cheap) I would have expected much, much better for a five star hotel. Travel lodge housekeeping at £50 per night is more professional.

I think the hotel is understaffed, and do not blame the individuals. But if understaffed, the rooms should not be sold.

We informed reception about our thoughts a couple of times during our stay. Our stay was certainly not all bad but, other than the price, it was definitely not a 5* experience.

A bottle of wine at dinner or another small gesture may have avoided this review.

Under his eye.

We spent 2 nights at the hotel. Since our arrival, in our suite, there was a really strong sewer smell. This was particularly unbearable when we later came back to the room from having dinner in their Michelin-star restaurant. The morning after I spoke with the concierge complaining about it. They told me that they were going to take care of the problem and that they would have eventually changed our room. When we came back in the evening everything was still the same, same room and same smell. I complained again, and after 10 minutes a lady appeared in our room and started spraying all around the room and awful deodorant with the only result that the room smelled like a public bathroom for half an hour before the original sewer small came back. I complained again telling the concierge that we were not okay with sleeping again in the room and that, at least, since "Chateau de la gaude" is a Relais Chateau (5 stars) they should have compensated us for the discomfort suffered. The lady at the desk wrote everything on the computer, said she was going to take care of it and that was all. Nobody checked on us again, they didn't offer us neither a new room or anything else (a free breakfast might have been at least a sign) and when I checked out, the same lady who knew everything about the smell didn't say a word about the problem.
One more thing, our neighbor on the first night had a really bad cough and it was like having him in the bed: poor sound proofing for a 5 stars hotel.

There is so much potential for this property. It’s on beautiful grounds and has a beautiful set up. There is an impressive wine store and extraordinary art throughout the hotel. But there were a lot of problems. My partner and I read the reviews about the poor quality of service, as well as the responses from the owner saying he was aware of these issues and was working on addressing them. So we decided to give this a try. Unfortunately, the service still was so lacking with every experience we had. I struggled to get the right attention and the right service. I had to constantly remind the front desk of our requests, and stay on top of them - like a babysitter. Another issue we had was that we were staying in the room/ pod that was “off the grid” from the main hotel -meaning across the wine vineyard and about a 5 min away away. I understand that the owner wanted people who’ve stayed in those rooms to have a natural experience, be at one with nature, etc. but we found it really unpractical. There was no phone and no wifi or even 3G or 4G. We had several problems with our room and had no way of calling the reception. Our mobile phones didn’t even work. I asked the hotel, what would happen if one of my children back home in london needed me? Or if I had an emergency ? I had no way of reaching out to the hotel at all. When I asked the front desk reception about this, and asked for the rational behind this, they shrugged their shoulders and said that this is what the owner had decided to do with the rooms and they agreed with me.

Finally, I left a note when we checked out for the owner with my email address, and offered to give him my feedback if he could contact me. He never contacted me. I would say give your business to another worthy hotel until this one has it’s actually together.

Spent three idyllic evenings here. It was just bliss!
The bedroom interior was absolutely lovely, very comfortable bed and great air conditioning. I was a little worried as we were on the ground floor and there were tables and chairs close in the courtyard close to our room (my husband is a very light sleeper) however there was no noise, so it was not an issue.
The grounds are spectacular, we had lovely walks, including around the vineyards.
The pool area is absolutely wonderful, we swam and sat around there for hours.
La Source Restaurant, the brasserie was the best hotel restaurant food we have ever eaten. It was so delicious, very well executed and the service was amazing. We could not get over how good the food was, my Husband is a chef so and was very impressed. The burrata mouse is an absolute must. Really cannot recommend the restaurant more highly.
I needed to use a room for a work call and the staff went out of their way to help me find somewhere private, it was much appreciated.
Overall it is a wonderful place to escape to for a few days. It is also only about a 15 minute drive to the heart of Aix en Provence.

Luxurious resort set in huge well maintained grounds. Exceptionally polite staff and excellent service. We happened to be late for dinner one night because our car broke down and we thought we would have to go without dinner but we were in for a surprise for soon after we reached the hotel, the restaurant manager himself came to our room and saw to it that his staff laid out the dinner in our room. We were really touched by this hospitality. I would certainly recommend the Chateau de La Gaude to anyone who visits Aix - en - Provence.

This property and the setting couldn’t be improved upon.
The setting is glorious…the accommodation is very very good…the food and staff in the Michelin restaurant are absolutely perfect as is the setting.
The group hotels should look at this owner operated hotel and learn from this unit.
It’s not inexpensive but not overpriced.
Upon arrival Gregory was charming …helpful and friendly….forget about no elevator the staff carried the heavy cases in seconds with no issue what so ever.
The place deserves GREAT SUCCESS….. not forgetting fantastic artworks throughout the property.

We stayed at chateau la gaude in the summer of 2021. The hotel and gardens are very nice. The service was terrible. We arrived early, the room was not ready which is understandable. But then we only got the keys 1 hour after the expected check in time. 2hrs of wait. No communication. Next day we headed out for the day, came back around 3 in the afternoon, and the room was not made. They explained they were short staffed. For the price you pay that’s not an excuse. We did comment on all this and barely got an apology. I would definetly not recommend this place.

Stop looking and jjust stay here! We are frequent 5/6 star travelers and I wanted to move in here. There’s so much to do/see in Provence that’s beautiful but I didn’t even want to leave the grounds. Staff was fabulous, from start to finish. Food was amazing and the artwork is incredible. Like living in a museum with luxury surrounds. I know there are a lot of beautiful chateaus in the area - but I’ve never been so blown away by the one. Please do yourself a favor and stay here. Thank you, Chateau de la Gaude!

Beautiful property and grounds.

Pool area is very attractive.

Rooms are on the small side - the bathrooms are large - might have been worth ceding a little space in the bathroom to make the bedroom a touch larger.

The bathrooms are very nice - however the basin taps are sensor activated , we were not able to make the water cold. Perhaps this is possible , we just couldn’t work out how to change the temperature.

Only La Source restaurant was open the night we stayed - the other restaurants are closed two days a week - this would have been nice to know before booking.

Our meal at La Source was OK , although overpriced. Also there appeared to be some group visitors who received more attentive service.
