The Dragon "Tarasque" is defeated
Oct 2012 • Friends
We visited this church just by chance and were delighted to discover the myth of the slaying of the dragon by St. Marthe. Marthe, along with Mary Magdalene, landed in Les Saintes Marie de la Mer but Marthe went up the Rhone where she tamed the dragon " half animal and half fish, bigger than a cow, longer than a horse and with teeth like sword-shaped horns and armed with two shields." as Jacobus of Voragine described the amphibian monster, the Tarasque, in "The Golden Legend” (1255). Unfortunately for the dragon, she marched it around the city where the mob killed it. Lovely little church close to the Chateau de Tarascon. A replica of the dragon is carried through the streets once a year. Avoid or choose Tarascon on Tuesdays as that is market day.
