Lively at night , stalls and much seafood!

During summer this port is lively with all you can think about. I could not sleep in my apartment with the non-stop outside sounds going on until sunrise. Restaurants start arranging tables & chairs after sunset awaiting customers arriving by hundred who stay until early hours of next day. Artists painting, musicians playing, kids, dogs, bicycle riders, vendors, 100s of... More

A lovely place to stroll around in the summer sunshine, with lots of street entertainers, market stalls etc. going on. The streets off the harbour are full of delightful medieval buildings. We visited in July, as it was the only time suitable for us, but another time we would go in June or September - less families and children!

Old port in La Rochelle is very nice with towers, old Lighthouse nearby, old gate to city and many nice bar and restaurant. Only problem was large crowd of tourist (we were part of this crowd:) ) so big that sometimes it was difficult to walk. But at 6 am port looks even better and is without people.

I lived close to La Rochelle some 25 years ago. Each time I go back I still enjoy the vue and the ambience around le vieux port. Lots of cafés and small restaurants with terrace facing the port and and the towers. Don't miss the streets of the old city behind the clock towers. Over the last 20 years a... More

The old port is picturesque, with historic buildings, modern yacht havens, museums, bars and restaurants, and adjacent shopping. Lots to see and do here.

Nice architecture, huge variety and number of eateries, fantastic street entertainment from gymnasts to magicians and all kinds of conveyances; walks, bikes, buses, water taxis and cruises. Found out that the police here speak little English but will help you file a report for insurance purposes after some cretin(s) steals your bikes. Try to not let it ruin your holiday,... More
