The woods are now beautifully peaceful but very moving to realise that 100 years ago the woods were the scene of ferocious fighting at close combat. There are trails to follow with plaques giving details of the fighting.

Without exception, this tour with Gilles Lagin was the best battlefield tour I have ever taken and probably the best tour overall, I just can’t remember them all. Gilles, “jeeel”, is so passionate about his research of this specific moment in history that he can’t...More

Learning about the famous USMC battles at boot camp is one thing but actually coming to the location of one is quite another. I'm sure that it looks different after 100 years but it is a very solemn place.

My grandfather fought as a USMC officer at Belleau Wood. I have heard about the place all my life and more recently read about the awful battle there. It is very peaceful now. The trees have grown back. You can still see the foxholes. Anyone interested...More

We stopped on our way to Paris and it was an amazing experience. The cemetery was sobering and a deserving tribute to those who made the sacrifice. Even after 100 years it is well kept. Bellau Wood brought on a lot of emotion to be...More

Being a bi-national French American citizen , I was stunned to hear about Belleau wood battle as the most important WW1 site for the Americans, while no French citizen knows about the story. I therefore decided to visit and bring back some water from the...More

The grounds are very nice. There are relics left over from that battle. If you go to the cemetery below you can get a map of information about the woods.

This monument appropriately honors the participation of the USMC in the Great War. During my visit I was pleased to see a large French tour group standing around the monument and receiving a thorough orientation from a French tour guide.

We didn't use a guide. Our time was short because there were a few other USMC places in the area that we wanted to visit that day. So we just drove to the the Marine Memorial and walked around the wood.

I would check with the US government: or with US Marines as so significant in their history.

WWI Marine Memorial at Belleau Wood (5 Replies)
On average, how much time does one need to see Belleau wood and the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery?

Neither is huge but it really depends on your level of interest. I spent about 30 or 40 minutes at each place. I assume you'll have a car as you can't reach either place by public transport. I've done a lot of exploration of that area and I responded on a thread a while ago about WWI sites near Château-Thierry and you might find some helpful info in that thread. My reply is in post 11 but I bet you'll find good info in the other responses as well: ...More

Itinerary help in Champagne. (4 Replies)
We could use some suggestions regarding visiting this area for two days before our flight out of CDG. We will have a car and will be coming from Strasbourg. We will be in France for a 23 day drive this October and this will be our last two days. We do have days to add, but we’d need to remove from Alsace. So before booking hotel reservations, want to plan our sightseeing first. Number 1 on our list is to visit the WWI Marine Memorial at Belleau Wood, which as I see is around...More

Thanks again. And also, that we can do the Champagne visits ourselves. I have all your website suggestions marked. Regarding our whole 23 day trip, I still have too many stops, but it's so hard to pick and choose areas. But to make this final few days, I need to cut a day or so somewhere.
