- alisonbarrow1Fougeres, France3 contributionsA grown man's dream come trueMy husband and I spent a very happy and productive 3 hours at this museum and it was worth every penny. My husband is a Military Historian and has a profound love of armored vehicles and tanks. He was in his absolute heaven. I have never seen him take so many photographs for reference. I have accompanied him on museum visits across the globe but the quantity and quality of the display vehicles is superb. Thank you!!Visited March 2020Written March 10, 2020
- Guillaume RGothenburg, Sweden1,022 contributionsWorld-class tank collectionWe visited Musée des Blindés in August 2021. The museum itself is special as it is housed in a warehouse run by non-profit organisation. Money is tight and spent on restoring vehicles, not the building. As a result, the museum itself is a museum of how to present artefacts 20+ years ago, but in a good way. There is a feeling of honesty to the displays and pride for the work. The collection of tanks is one of the best in the world, with a sole running Koenigstiger in the world and an otherwise almost exhaustive collection of Word War II tanks from the German, UK and US sides. Russian period armor is limited to T34s. Notable as well is the collection of French tanks from World War I to contemporary ones. Explanations are limited but sufficient for the casual observer. Fans will benefit from researching in advance. Highly recommended.Visited August 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten August 14, 2021
- Cian Mongey5 contributionsA real eye openerWhat an amazing and eye opening experience. You don't realize how big they are until you are standing right beside them. The vast array of tanks and dioramas kept every inch of space interesting. The layout was very well done. I still can't believe I touched an actual piece of the Berlin wall! And the price is extremely reasonable! This is definitely a must see if you are in the area of Saumur.Visited August 2021Traveled with familyWritten August 26, 2021

The static displays of armour and weaponry, in this excellent museum, must be amongst the best in the world. Care has been taken so that you can look around each of the exhibits. The information boards contain relevant facts in English. What was amazing is there must be nearly 50 tanks outside, not on display, as well.

It was a great and positive surprise. We only realized this museum existed once we arrived Saumur and we decided to visit it. It was worthi it. If you are keen on military and history you should visit it. It has lots of tanks very well organized. All the famous one from WWII are there and very well displayed, even with 3 D visit trough app. They also have more recent tanks and all the "new" one from different countries are there will information displayed correctly.

Must be the best tank museum I have visited. Especially the german section with WW2 panzers is second to none. I was very impressed with the whole collection. Only tank the miss must be the impossible-to-get "Maus".

Advertised as the biggest tank museum in the world with the only working King Tiger left in the world. Easy to find and very easy to spend an hour or two. Well laid out and well worth a visit.

Outstanding! This collection is unbelievable. Plan on 2 hours Minimum, better make that three! I later donated to the museum, I hope that they keep up the good work. Had an amateur with me, he was most heavily impressed. Not for Children, of course, but for History fans.

Great collection but very little which offers interactive things for younger visitors. Surprised that such a new museum hadn't thought to do this. It could do with a little more history plus a mention of the casualties from tank regiments.

The Tank Museum in Saumur is a must for any armour enthusiast.
Located near the town centre it's well signposted from the visitor information centre. Entry charge was very reasonable.
The Museum claims to have the worlds largest collection with some 200 exhibits ranging from the 1st World war to contemporary Israeli battletanks.
Quite a few French tanks as you'd expect but also wonderful examples of T34/76 & 85, King Tiger, SU 100, Sturmgeschutz III etc etc. If you never grew up this is the place for you!
Historical interpretation was brief but includes English.
A modest cafe with vending machine and a shop selling military related items.
My son and I loved it and for me it was a highlight of a two week tour of France. My wife and daughter hated it and camped out in the cafe. Women!!

Considering myself almost a regular at the Bovington Tank Museum, I thought I had seen it all - how wrong I was! The collection is second to none and they have some real gems in Saumur. Amazingly, most of the beasts are still in working order. An absolute must for anyone interested in tanks and military history and well worth the trip to Saumur.

In the heart of the Loire region you will find one of the most prestigious tank collections in Europe. It goes beyond saying that the French have made some severe armoured vehicles and, of course, the proud French put these all on display in Saumur. Well done. Hoewever, by far its finest collection is obviously the German WWII vehicle exhibitionm, as you will probably find 90% of all Wehrmacht Panzer types here in Saumur. The setting is rather conventional, not very modern and not very attractive either, but for people who are interested in WWII armoured hardware, this is definitely the place to be. At level playing field with the other three major institutions in this field, located in Bovington (UK), Munster (G) and Kubinka (RUS) is Saumur well worth a visit too. And hey, do yourself this favour: buy the optional photography license. For just 5 euro's more you'll be able to enjoy the exhibition at home once again.

I would like to know when the tanks actually start up and drive down the streets?
I will be there around Mid June.

Hi, can anyone tell me if tickets give you access over more than one day like Bovington and some other attractions, ie pay on the day and then get free return visits for the next year?

Planning a trip to Paris this summer and would like to visit this museum; is it necessary to rent a car or is there a tour company that provides a trip to the museum? When I google how to get to Saumur, it says to go to Tours and then use regional SNCF but that looks not very reliable. Thank you for any help that can be provided.

Hi, I visited the tank museum in Saumer last week and travelled via train from Paris (albeit Charles De Gaulle airport.) I got the TGV from the airport to Angers but the Tours route you mention is similar but brings you into Saumur from the other direction. I found the trains very reliable, clean and ok time. The TGV itself is a real experience too if you like trains and a bit more relaxing than driving.
From Saumer railway station it's 10-15 minute walk into the town to get a bus (no 34 stops about 100 yards from the entrance) or jump in a taxi right outside the station.
Not sure how well you speak French but all the trains and the buses I went on have screens (as well as voice announcements) showing the next stop so you don't have to rely on someone reminding you where to get off or listen all the time.
Hope that's some help and hope you enjoy your trip.
