- HD883Elbeuf, France141 contributionsFormer guide during my national service during the weekend of this fabulous museum in 1980, I always return there with pleasure. It is the armored museum richest in material from the origin of the battle tank to today. Its presentation is very educational and its store is well stocked. It should be noted that many of these vehicles are in working order and can be seen dynamically during the carousel.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 20, 2024
- BeotienChatou, France455 contributionsWhat a collection!! A remarkable museum that should appeal greatly to children interested in wars that we would have preferred not to know of course. Beyond this consideration, let us highlight the research and development work of about 200 German, Russian, French, American tanks... A visit lasting at least 2 hours. To favor rainy days.Bonjour Christophe, Merci beaucoup pour votre retour ! - silmar651,833 contributionsThe museum is not to be missed because its collection of armoured vehicles from all periods is magnificent. This was our second visit to these places and we never tire of seeing these relics in working order. The entrance fee is also low. Allow at least 3 hours to go around.Bonjour silmar65, Merci beaucoup pour votre retour ! - sgavoyagesParis, France10,614 contributionsThis museum is one of the most famous armoured museums in the world. Not to be missed. It is located 30 minutes walk from the city center. Complicated to come by public transport. Two huge hangars hold tanks from all over the world. German part not to be missed. No restaurant on site.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten July 1, 2024
- Philippe PNovalaise, France20 contributionsTaking advantage of the international model show, we visited the museum. It is a monument of armoured vehicles, very well arranged with good explanations. There are even sectional views of vehicles that allow to see the interior. Inside and outside, all well placed and clean. There is plenty to do for fans and the uninitiated. To discover for the memory of our elders.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 28, 2024
- MeliiinaBasse-Normandie, France1,805 contributionsVery beautiful museum which brings together a multitude of tanks and tells their stories. Several pieces, main countries represented. Some armored vehicles still in working order. Free tour. Allow at least 2 hours.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 7, 2024
- AnthoSens, France3 contributionsSince the time I wish to go! I wasn't disappointed at all, they have an incredible assortment of blind vehicles spanning several generations, the information goes to the point and there is some more detailed story about characters or even important. Honestly if you take the time to read everything there is easy for 4h visit, I spent 2h30+ without having read everything! I'd like to see some particular tank like: ELC AMX, T29/T32/T95 (US), but we can't have everything haha. I highly recommend to all History enthusiasts!Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten September 14, 2024
- thierry t66 contributionsA must for history buffs, one of the best armoured museums in the world. Between museum and toy store for young and old. Personally at least 4th passage and not the last. My 5 year old son loved it, we spent 1h30, the cold pushed my wife (and unfortunately us with) towards the exit. The shop is also nice.Bonjour Thierry, Un grand merci pour vos gentils mots ! - Stephane P89 contributionsAn impressive collection of vehicles restored or in their juice. The additional guided tour is worthwhile as the Guide is passionate and captivating. Count at least 2 hours of visit or much more. In the regret section, no restoration point, a model space little highlighted and old toilets.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 21, 2024
- Bernard PWavre, Belgium231 contributionsAnother visit for me to the Museum of the Armored. An exceptional collection of armoured vehicles and a paradise for the lover of military history, the modeller or simply the tourist. I also regularly visit the other reference in this field: the Tank Museum in Bovington, Great Britain. The two are generally equivalent in terms of pieces but the museography is more neat on the other side of the Channel. I think that the space available (and the budget?) is not unrelated to this: the armoured vehicles in Saumur are tightened against each other, in line, with the exception of some models, in a suite of hangars.. Models lack a bit of realism and explanations are limited to a panel in front of each armored vehicle. All this exudes a military sobriety. Indeed, as their website says: "A museum by and for the military." The shop is also more limited. Hats off to the volunteers who maintain this heritage.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 22, 2024

Huge museum with an impressive collection of armored vehicles. Minimum visiting time: 1h30. But it can last for hours if you wander around. I appreciated the QR code for a virtual tour of the interior of certain armored vehicles. I would have liked to ride in one of them but I can understand that we respect these machines.
Nice visit.

The number and quality of the armored vehicles make this visit unmissable for enthusiasts.
A few drawbacks, however: a large number of identification signs are missing. For those existing, they are more than summary, bordering on contempt
In winter, the halls are freezing, so cover up.
The shop sells trinkets made in P.R. of China, Heimdall publications overpriced like everywhere, and the two employees present are obviously paid to hang around.

We visited Musée des Blindés in August 2021.
The museum itself is special as it is housed in a warehouse run by non-profit organisation. Money is tight and spent on restoring vehicles, not the building.
As a result, the museum itself is a museum of how to present artefacts 20+ years ago, but in a good way. There is a feeling of honesty to the displays and pride for the work.
The collection of tanks is one of the best in the world, with a sole running Koenigstiger in the world and an otherwise almost exhaustive collection of Word War II tanks from the German, UK and US sides. Russian period armor is limited to T34s.
Notable as well is the collection of French tanks from World War I to contemporary ones.
Explanations are limited but sufficient for the casual observer. Fans will benefit from researching in advance.
Highly recommended.

A priori, such a museum does not attract crowds but rather enthusiasts... and yet it is quite impressive. The machines from 1914 to the present day are surprising. We quickly let ourselves be taken in by the atmosphere, by the tanks, by the armored vehicles, by the evolution of contemporary history which is totally associated. Unique in the world. Not to miss !

The static displays of armour and weaponry, in this excellent museum, must be amongst the best in the world. Care has been taken so that you can look around each of the exhibits. The information boards contain relevant facts in English. What was amazing is there must be nearly 50 tanks outside, not on display, as well.

My husband and I spent a very happy and productive 3 hours at this museum and it was worth every penny. My husband is a Military Historian and has a profound love of armored vehicles and tanks. He was in his absolute heaven. I have never seen him take so many photographs for reference. I have accompanied him on museum visits across the globe but the quantity and quality of the display vehicles is superb. Thank you!!

I have a subscription for this really very interesting museum with beautiful, well-maintained machines. At the foot of certain vehicles there are QR codes which allow you to virtually find yourself inside the machine. A real plus. No problem parking, the parking lot is large.

What an amazing and eye opening experience. You don't realize how big they are until you are standing right beside them. The vast array of tanks and dioramas kept every inch of space interesting. The layout was very well done. I still can't believe I touched an actual piece of the Berlin wall! And the price is extremely reasonable! This is definitely a must see if you are in the area of Saumur.

It was a great and positive surprise. We only realized this museum existed once we arrived Saumur and we decided to visit it. It was worthi it. If you are keen on military and history you should visit it. It has lots of tanks very well organized. All the famous one from WWII are there and very well displayed, even with 3 D visit trough app. They also have more recent tanks and all the "new" one from different countries are there will information displayed correctly.

Getting here from Nantes - is it possible by public transport such as train?

I would like to know when the tanks actually start up and drive down the streets?
I will be there around Mid June.

Hi, can anyone tell me if tickets give you access over more than one day like Bovington and some other attractions, ie pay on the day and then get free return visits for the next year?

Planning a trip to Paris this summer and would like to visit this museum; is it necessary to rent a car or is there a tour company that provides a trip to the museum? When I google how to get to Saumur, it says to go to Tours and then use regional SNCF but that looks not very reliable. Thank you for any help that can be provided.
Written January 20, 2017
Hi, I visited the tank museum in Saumer last week and travelled via train from Paris (albeit Charles De Gaulle airport.) I got the TGV from the airport to Angers but the Tours route you mention is similar but brings you into Saumur from the other direction. I found the trains very reliable, clean and ok time. The TGV itself is a real experience too if you like trains and a bit more relaxing than driving.
From Saumer railway station it's 10-15 minute walk into the town to get a bus (no 34 stops about 100 yards from the entrance) or jump in a taxi right outside the station.
Not sure how well you speak French but all the trains and the buses I went on have screens (as well as voice announcements) showing the next stop so you don't have to rely on someone reminding you where to get off or listen all the time.
Hope that's some help and hope you enjoy your trip.
