I heard about the the French Cavalry museum by reading one of General Pattons Biographies. After WW1 he toured France and made stop in Saumur to visit the Cavalry School. Reading this I new I had to go. The Museum had so many artefacts. The attendant was a member of the military and seeing my interest, despite a slight language barrier was more than happy to answer my questions. He showed my a pair of riding boots and a helmet donated by General Patton himself!

We visited towards the end of a day of museums, but found the staff friendly and helpful and the displays well worth a look.
Once again, it was interesting to read alternative perceptions of historical events.
Most of the displays did have English translations - which is helpful.

Musée de la Cavalerie is literally the chivalry museum and it is located in the surroundings of Saumur, in Loire Region, in France. In fact, it is a museum of the war, when the chivalry was very important for the war. It is an historical and you can learn about the wars between France and other countries. Interesting.

I arrived early February to visit, but it is closed until later this month. Tripadvisor shows it open, but it is not. Also, their website is only in French, and I could not find a calendar for it. On their door is the schedule for the year.

This is nice as it was part of the Saumur Castle, it was worth a walk around. I would not recommend that you go only here.

This museum, located in the equestrian and military quarter of Saumur offers two wings of dioramas which are very well done. They certainly have a lot of material culture from the history of the French Cavalry. The first part was more interesting to us because of its emphasis on horses -- the saddles, etc. The second wing focuses on the 20th Century, so it is all tanks, guns and not so interesting.

I have very little knowledge of French history and therefore wasn't too desperate to go to this museum but I was pleasantly surprised. There are some great artifacts and I learned a few things. Worth a visit if you have a couple of hours to spare.

Quiet in September , therefore can view museum in own time.
Good Access
Details plaques in French and English. Fabulous costumers over a period of time through to modern day.
A section on Women's role in the forces, this was not in English but ration books etc were. Uplifting music to accompany this exhibition on Women's role.
Small gift shop.
Toilet Facilities
Very interesting for people who are particularly interested in dates /French History and Costumes.

I came to Saumur to see this museum and it didn't disappoint. I found the displays very informative. There is a large parking area close by to it as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
