About
Tourisitc visits of Ackerman's cellars in Saumur and tasting. A three-part visit at the heart of troglodyte cellars: a trip throughout history, an artistic experience and a break on the Loire river... Founded in 1811, Ackerman is the leading producer of Loire Valley fine sparkling wines. Situated in Saumur, on the banks of the Thouet river, a tributary of the Loire, at once informative and entertaining, the cellars of the House of Ackerman combine charm, heritage, and prestige. The wines of Ackerman are true to type, well-balanced and elegant. Thanks to a large selection of fine sparkling wines (Cremant de Loire, Saumur Brut) and Loire Valley still wines (Saumur-Champigny, St Nicolas de Bourgueil, Chinon, Sancerre...), you will be able to appreciate the prestige of a great brand which has seduced consumers world-wide over the past two centuries. Ackerman is bubbly, luminous and enticing. The House's still, sparkling, organic and alcohol-free wines are available at its boutique all year round. Discover Ackerman's world of wines.

- C SLondon, United Kingdom49 contributionsGreat visit!Really interesting and informative self guided tour in French and English in the cellars, so jumpers needed. Wonderful art installations then traditional games at the end of the visit. The staff were welcoming and friendly and we tasted several sparkling and 2 still wines which were all delicious. There is an extensive selection of their sparkling and still wines to purchase at very reasonable prices. A great way to spend a couple of hours and learn about the methode traditionelle.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 5, 2024
- Polly Mackay6 contributionsFun self guided tourWe dropped in unplanned on way up north to ferry. Was a really fun 1 1/2 hr visit which even the teens enjoyed. We did a self guided tour which was fun. Loads of info along the way and then a wine tasting at the end with alcohol free options. Caves are eerie and chilly so wear a jumper! Good value.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 30, 2024

Did we visit the same place? We get the tour was too long and in places under it and claustrophobic. Our tour guide seemed to have a programmed patter and was uncomfortable answering questions. Yes, the art work in the !side was very good, but the 4 wines we were invited to taste were simply awful. But at an average of 7 euros a bottle you can't expect much I suppose!

Hello,
We thank you for your message.
We are sorry to read that you feel that we did not explain much about wine. The caves you have visited are the historical site of the company where we used to produce our wines. Today, we have a new production site near Saumur. As we don’t use anymore those caves for the production, we have created an artistic residency: that’s why we welcome different exhibitions in our caves in addition to the traditional parts (history, traditional process…).
During the tour, we first use the old tools to explain you the traditional process, and then show you a video that explains you the new process. Plus, since last year,
our historical Royal Crémant de Loire (about 40.000 bottles) is back in our troglodytic caves for ageing.
Unfortunately, as you may have come with a tour operator, sometimes the guide of this tour operator asks us to shorten the tour because of his or her schedule. So of course, we must adapt the tour and we are not able to tell the visitors everything.
As for the tasting, we are sorry to read that you did not find any wine at your taste. And yet, our wines get regularly awarded (For example, Crémant de Loire Royal Brut 2019 (Ackerman) obtained a gold medal at the 2023 National contest of Crémant).
For groups, we select several wines to taste for practical reasons. But if any member of the group wants to taste any other wine (we have a large range of wines), it is of course possible on demand.
We hope to welcome you again soon. Don’t’ hesitate to contact us to organize your next visit.
Best regards,
The Ackerman team

We visited Ackerman's again this year after first visiting in 2017. The caves are really interesting along with the art installations. They really do have some lovely produce and the Royal Rouge is a personal favourite, we ended up getting 7 bottles.
However it is very disappointing to find you can get it all cheaper by €2-3 a bottle at the local Carrefour Market Distre. When you are buying 12 plus bottles like we did this makes a huge difference in price.

Hello,
We thank you for your message.
We are delighted to read that you enjoyed your visit of our caves amongst the highest in
the region in which you discover different art exhibitions in addition to the traditional parts (history, traditional process…).
We are also happy to notice that you had a good time while tasting our wines.
Unfortunately, you are right, sometimes you can find cheaper prices in supermarkets because they buy our wines in big quantities and negotiate the prices. However, in our shop, we offer you special cuvées, that you can only find in our shop, and that you can taste on our team’s advice.
We hope to welcome you again in our caves when you will be back in the area.
Best regards.

Well that was unexpected, went for wine tasting ended up literally in an art installation. Wine tasteing and museum are all good but art was worth admission alone. Also old style games to play at end. Amazing space and quite other worldly with acoustics and visual art pieces.

Great way to spend a good hour or so of your day. The caves and the story behind them are very interesting. I won't spoil it, but the creative way in which these caves are presented are beautiful and very unique. Suitable for all ages. Enjoyed wine tasting at the end. I'd never done wine tasting before but the member of staff was very friendly, helpful and down to earth. We bought 3 bottles in the end!

My wife and I enjoyed the tour and wine tasting although the young lady who was looking after us, Claire, was pushed as there were quite a few customers and at times she was on her own. I have rated this as a two as we spent over €200 only half an hour later to find out that what we bought was far cheaper in the Leclerc down the road. This left a sour taste.

We were also very lucky! A personal tour with an intern who told us all about the history of Ackerman. In addition, the impressive works of art. Not really into art myself, but this was special. Finally, after tasting different wines, we selected three delicious wines, thanks to a fellow countryman. An organic wine that we had not selected ourselves was a winner.

Excellent Tour of the caves with some history of the wine and an incredible art installation that invites you to take part. The wooden games room was also appreciated by both myself and the kids. Wine was lovely and we came away with a case. There was also wine tasting for the kids who thought that was great and a good choice of alcohol free wines for them to try. Not bad for 12 euros (kids were free) in total!

We spent a couple of hours here on a particularly hot day. Self-guided tour was leisurely and it was a very quiet day so not many other people around really. The exhibit is informative and the art displays were good too. We enjoyed the free tasting at the end and bought 6 bottles to take home. Not all the bottles made it home as we drank them on holiday so I will have to find somewhere in the UK which sells Ackerman Cremant de Loire.

Saumur, France
Hello and thank you for your message and for the interest you have in our wines,
You have two possibilities to visit the caves :
- self-guided tour (with panels in French and English) : 6€ per person
- for the same price you have the possibility of using a digital tablet (French and English).
It is free for people under 14 and there is no need to book before.
Somebody explains you the main information and, of course, you can taste the wines after the tour (we also suggest some sparkling grape juice).
The length for the tour and the wine tasting is around one hour and a half. We advise you then to come one hour and a half before the closing time.
The tour is rather complete with History, Wine making, Art and Games. New in 2019 : Chapuisat brothers’ art exhibition in partnership with Fontevraud. You can still see the works of art of Julien S, Bertrand Gadenne and Séverine Hubard. More details on our website
Temperature in the caves: between 10°C and 12°C. Don't forget to bring cardigans or jumpers.
Accepted means of payment: cash, credit card.
Waiting for seeing you,
Regards
The Ackerman Team

J'ai reçu de votre adresse une proposition d'un certain Jean Paul Luneau qui laissait entendre qu'il était le vigneron du lieu !
Qu'en est il, réalité ou pur marketing trompeur?
