A gorgeous looking old building. Very unusual architecture. A real sense of old France and the lovely facades of houses

Impressive old structure
Sep 2019
There are many historic buildings in Angers, among them many houses, but this is one of the most impressive, with its elaborately carved wooden exterior. These days it houses what we would call an art and craft centre, but you don't need to go inside to enjoy the aesthetic of a very handsome old structure. It is included in the itinerary of the Petit Train Touristique road train, but it is worth walking back afterwards and having a more leisurely look. You may also be tempted to buy some of the arts and crafts within.

Very nice Middle Ages building
Aug 2018 • Family
Maison d'Adam is probably the most beautiful Middle Ages house located in Angers, a city in Anjou Region, in Loire Valley, in France. It is located in the old town, in the Place St-Croix and it is a very different house. It is built with wood and it is really very beautiful. If you walk around the old town, when you arrive to the square, I am sure you know what is this house. Very nice.

Built around 1491, Maison d'Adam, just behind the Cathedral, is one of Anger's best preserved medieval houses.
Whilst walking around the city we suddenly came upon this house and were mesmerized at what beheld us. It is also known as the house of Adam and Eve or, the Tree of Life.
A half- timbered building, at the crossroads of Montault street and Sainte-Croix place , it is now known as the 'Craftsmen's House of Angers'.
The exterior carvings can be seen from the street and the facades and building itself is classified as an historic monument.
At the Revolution, revolutionaries destroyed the figures of Adam and Eve with the serpent, leaving only the apple tree. There are ornamental patterns such as the knots of trees, religious subjects and a range of secular and vulgar scenes and figures. The figures portray a character or an animal.
It is important to try to imagine that all the decors would have been adorned with bright colours which disappeared after modifications to the building in 1814. The last major restoration was carried out in 1994

The ground floor of the interior is now a gallery shop selling handcrafted glassware and sculptures as well as other artworks. The shop is open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The building was on our list to see places but we had been expecting a type of museum? A must to see!

Very interesting Half Timbered House
Sep 2018 • Family
While many of these houses are interesting this one stands out, There are perhaps fifty carved figures on the facade. Really interesting, plus trying to find the male figure with his pants pulled down always fun.

Very pretty to photograph & window shop
Aug 2018 • Family
We came across this whilst having a walk around the town on the evening we arrived. It was sadly closed, so we couldnt look inside but what I could see through the windows was lovely. Not sure if I would go in with young kids, mine are 7 & 9 and I'd probably be afraid they would accidentally knock into something (!!!) from what I could see! The outside is BEAUTIFUL - old with the wooden decor and the carvings on the outside are fascinating. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Angers as part of the city's history.

Extraordinary Shop

Just love this place. Located in a very old building on a couple of floors. I have been before and just find it fascinating to walk around. The staff are helpful but not pushy. I particularly like the Murano glass pendants etc. A must for any visit to Angers.

A glimpse back to the past
Jun 2018 • Couples
Amazingly this lovely old building has survived into the modern age. One can but half close one's eyes and think of it in the days when it was one of many. It provides a real contrast between those earlier years and the succeeding centuries
