Reputedly the oldest house in Angers, the Maison d'Adam dates to 1491. It is the most famous of the 40 or so timber-framed houses still in place near the Cathedral in Angers city centre. It is most known for its wooden carvings displayed all over the house's exterior -- some of which are a little risque. The carvings can be seen anytime from the street. The interior of the shop is an artisan gallery selling unique local arts and crafts.

Like many others, we chanced upon this extraordinary piece of mediaeval architecture by accident whilst heading to see the Cathedral ion Angers. It has the most wonderful wooden carvings on the exterior, including the famous one of a local man with his trousers down, known as the 'Tricouillard'. The interior is not open to the public, except that the ground floor is now a shop. Very glad we found it.

Built around 1491, Maison d'Adam, just behind the Cathedral, is one of Anger's best preserved medieval houses.
Whilst walking around the city we suddenly came upon this house and were mesmerized at what beheld us. It is also known as the house of Adam and Eve or, the Tree of Life.
A half- timbered building, at the crossroads of Montault street and Sainte-Croix place , it is now known as the 'Craftsmen's House of Angers'.
The exterior carvings can be seen from the street and the facades and building itself is classified as an historic monument.
At the Revolution, revolutionaries destroyed the figures of Adam and Eve with the serpent, leaving only the apple tree. There are ornamental patterns such as the knots of trees, religious subjects and a range of secular and vulgar scenes and figures. The figures portray a character or an animal.
It is important to try to imagine that all the decors would have been adorned with bright colours which disappeared after modifications to the building in 1814. The last major restoration was carried out in 1994

The ground floor of the interior is now a gallery shop selling handcrafted glassware and sculptures as well as other artworks. The shop is open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The building was on our list to see places but we had been expecting a type of museum? A must to see!

This maybe the most stunning beautiful well-kept old house in Angers. We had visited the shop in the first floor and be amazed about what they offered. Must go place in Angers.

While many of these houses are interesting this one stands out, There are perhaps fifty carved figures on the facade. Really interesting, plus trying to find the male figure with his pants pulled down always fun.

Just love this place. Located in a very old building on a couple of floors. I have been before and just find it fascinating to walk around. The staff are helpful but not pushy. I particularly like the Murano glass pendants etc. A must for any visit to Angers.

Since the shop inside is housed in a legitimate historic monument, you'll find the quality of the goods offered (as well as the prices) to be higher than the usual, as one would expect. I bought a number of tapestry pillow-covers that were easy to pack to take home and constitute a lovely souvenir of our visit to the Loire Valley.

Thank you for your comment ! It was a pleasure to welcome you in our shop. However, we have to clarify that our shop is suitable for all budgets; as a matter of fact, that is one of our concerns to offer good quality artists' creations at affordable prices. We are looking forward to see you again !
