- Adiona_TravelsKingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom210 contributionsA Truly Impressive BuildingThis building is truly impressive and well worth a visit. As we arrived late into Rouen and were leaving early the next morning or visit wasn't a particularly long one (about 15 minutes), but was worth taking the time to walk to the Cathedral. The architecture is stunning and the interior vast, well adorned and extremely interesting.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 3, 2023
- robwwLondon, United Kingdom525 contributionsWonderful masterpiece, must seeFree entry, but recommended to make a donation and or buy a souvenir. The cathedral is around 800 years old and has the tallest tower of any church in France at nearly 500 feet. Take a city guide tour to make the most of this amazing place and the other historic buildings here. Rouen is a fantastic city and you may need a few days here?Visited November 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 13, 2023
- RonL40Utica, New York3,720 contributionsStunning Gothic cathedralThe history of Notre Dame de Rouen is as interesting as it is impressive. Started in the 12th century, rebuilt several times because of fire and war, the cathedral thrives. A marvelous edifice that is as impressive inside, especially as one looks down the nave, as it is looking at the portals and the towers. Must see cathedral.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 1, 2023
- dccv1Toronto, Canada306 contributionsIn the Centre of RouenThis is a classic French Cathedral but seems to have more light than many others. The external stone work is both interesting and beautiful. There is also an interesting exhibit on the restoration of the Cathedral followwing the Second World War.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 12, 2023
- Guillaume AShizuoka, Japan2,117 contributionsAstonishing gothic church! This is the landmark of Rouen. Very impressive building with a very tall tower "flèche ". You really have to take the time to look at all the details to realize how amazing that building is. It was painted many times by the famous painter Claude Monet.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 11, 2024
- BigAdventurerTrinidad, California341 contributionsSpectacular Rouen Cathedral; don't miss this other Notre DameRouen Cathedral is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture. With Notra Dame de Paris still under renovation, it was wonderful to visit this marvelous cathedral with its stunning stained glass windows and beautiful interior. After a leisurely daytime visit we were invited to return for a late evening choral concert, a highlight of the trip. Amazing acoustics and the beautifully directed and accomplished singers left us spellbound. Unforgettable!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 29, 2024
- sodalissemperWashington DC, District of Columbia16 contributionsUnlike Any OtherA must see in Normandy. The cathedral displays building styles of different eras, starting from romanesque stone, to high gothic and further. Each of the three towers is different. Currently undergoing some renovation, but you can see all the important parts and the entrance is free of charge. I was specifically interested in seeing the effigy of Richard the Lionheart. His heart is actually buried there. Amazing history.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 9, 2024
- MummysunshineRyde, United Kingdom96 contributionsTruly amazing sightSuch a breathtakingly amazing place to visit. We were free to wander around inside, it is amazing and well worth a visit. Candles are available to buy inside. The history inside is wonderful but mainly in French so have google translate on hand or just enjoy the architecture and stained glass windows. Incredible. Currently outside the main spire is covered in scaffoldingVisited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 14, 2024

I must admit I am not a big fan of church visits but the architecture of Notre-Dame de Rouen was simply amazing, both inside and out. Well worth the time for a stroll through. In the evening we came back to see a light show projected on the cathedral and again this was well worth the time spent.

This Cathedral is stunning and absolutely worth a trip. I have seen the Cathedral twice now and it's spectacular no matter how many times I see it. In early Aug, I had the opportunity to visit for the Cathedral of Lights 2021. If you have a chance to go to Cathedral in the evening for this spectacular evening show, I highly recommend it. The audio visual presentation is about 30-45 minutes long. The projections overlay the Cathedral and it's a really unique way to see such an amazing piece of history.

The exterior of the cathedral is covered in lace like carving. Inside you can see some of the statues that used to decorate the outside and its great to see them face to face. The Julian window is lovely as are the library stairs. It is free to enter.

Truly a stunning cathedral! You must go see if you are in Rouen. It's easy to get to and find in the city - just look up. Parking is a little challenging in the city in general so if you find someplace to park - you are better off walking around the Old Town area.

Our visit to the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Rouen was perhaps the top highlight of our brief stay in Rouen. While we visited several impressive cathedrals in Belgium and France during our European vacation in 2019, the one in Rouen was particularly stunning. It was easy to see why Money chose this beautiful structure as the subject of several of his paintings.
Inside the ceilings soar under the Gothic arches that the marble columns hold up by sheer force of gravity. There are many impressive architectural features in the church, but probably most impressive are the dozens (hundreds) of carved statues that adorn the exterior of the church.
If you happen to be in town during the summer and the cathedral is holding its evening light shows, do not miss it! This was one of the coolest things we saw over the entire three weeks of our holiday, and we still talk about the images, music, and animation today. The photos and video you might see online do not do it justice, so if you have a chance to see it in person, don't pass it up!

We hadn't really intended to stay long in Rouen, just an overnight stop. The Old Town, though, kept drawing us in and drawing us in, with ever more interesting architecture. Then, we came to this absolute jewel of a cathedral.
We had come to expect a cathedral to be on a hill, big square in front of it, sunshine shining on it. This was different. Approached by narrow roads. Only its scale set it apart from other Medieval buildings. Rather dark, and even grimy on the outside.
Until we started t look closely. Then, we were captivated by the detailed carvings, the gandiose vision, the very scale of the place. Went inside and found it just as captivating there.
This may be tucked away in the Old Town, but is certainly one of the great European cathedrals.

Both the exterior and interior of the cathedral are spectacular, its sheer size is awe inspiring.
There is no entry fee, however if you wish to make a donation this can be done via card or collection box.
The interior while vast, awe inspiring and beautiful is not well lit and can be dark in places.
It is well worth the time to visit, however as others have said it is still undergoing repairs. This means a good amount of the architecture is not visible, especially inside where it is covered by scaffolding.
A beautiful building, senselessly damaged by war.

If you're a Monet fan you should through Rouen and see this beautiful cathedral. It's beauty in person and you can walk around and see all the angles that Monet painted it from. Go in the beginning of your walk around Rouen and come back later to see how the light has changed the cathedral.
Don't miss the Joan of Arc church nearby.

Almost every city in Europe has a magnificent cathedral but after awhile, they all seem quite similar. But this is one cathedral I would recommend visting because 1/ it is the tallest church in France; 2/it has 3 different towers with 3 different styles of architecture (destroyed and rebuilt many times); 3/Monet painted this cathedral many times so you can compare to his paintings. It is relatively large but still manageable. Beautiful statues of apostles and saints on the outside, ornate chapels in the inside. We spent 2-3 hour just wandering around looking at the chapels, the stained glass window and the exterior.

We were on a cruise that had cancelled a port in Hamburg and added Le Havre . Decided to take a train journey to Rouen and spend the day sightseeing.
The Cathedral with its gothic church spires ( of different designs) is impressive. Built between the 8th and 16th February you stand in front of it in awe of its design.
It was damaged in WW2 during the Normandy landings.
Inside we we visited there were a number of school children singing carols .
The stained glass windows are spectacular- and you should look for the tomb of Richard the Lionheart which is there.

Are there organized tours in the cathedral in different languages.
Most interested in the various royal tombs.
Written August 2, 2018
We did see docents in the Cathedrale giving tours in several languages... we did not see where you arranged these tours. Looked in the gift shop but no luck.
Don’t miss the Joan d’Arc museum near the Cathedrale. Very well done! And of course the gorgeous light show at 11p on the Cathedrale was fabulous!
We love your city and need to return soon

Is access to the crypts and tombs only with an official guide and if that is so do I need to book?
Written June 12, 2018
I have no idea... didn't even think about visiting the tombs, the cathedral is really amazing inside and outside, and one should see it at different times of the day, like Monet did... at twilight, at sunrise, midday, etc.

We are planning on visiting France from mid-June to July. We would like to see the Rouen cathedral laser light show. Is there a schedule for that event for 2018? Thank you.

Ohhh!! I don't know but normally it's at 10 pm. You should ask in the tourism information point in front of the cathedral for more information. It's very beautiful the light show!! You shouldn't miss it. Tania.

I think morning would be best if it sunny so you see the effect of the sun on the windows. But any time would really be fine as it is such an impressive site. We visited mid morning on a rainy day and it was still impressive.
