Exceptional museum. Hidden gem that's a must visit.
The museum is free and has a great collection that very much surprised us. If you visit the galleries chronologically, it begins a bit slowly. There is a wonderful Caravaggio and a great Van Dyke but the strength begins in the 19th century... beautiful Delacroix and a large Gericault group are followed by a superb impressionist collection is led by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley (more than a dozen great paintings by him) and much more. Don't miss the modernists on left side of the museum.. DuChamp, Modigiani, Duchamp-Villon, Valadon lead the parade but there is much much more. Remarkable group of art that surprises with its depth after 1800.

    A Top Attraction in Rouen
This was an excellent old style art gallery. It featured classical art with a range of paintings and sculpture. I found the works of the Impressionists to be of particular interest. The gallery is located in a lovely old building. Well worth a visit.

Great museum well worth a visit
This is a very good museum with some beautiful art. Spacious, well lit and free and packed with great stuff. It currently has a Hockney exhibition which I am afraid looks unimpressive surrounded by all the great old paintings, but interesting none the less. There is even a car park very close. Recommend this if you are in Rouen.

    Interesting collections and exhibits
May not be as impressive as the world's top galleries, but it is worth a visit for its outstanding items, such as a painting by Caravaggio and several Monets. The museum has interesting temporary exhibits and the building alone deserves attention. The staff is very welcoming.

    Beyond our expectations
This free museum is architecturally fascinating and surprised us by having paintings by many famous artists. They certainly have a lot to be proud of. We found several paintings in which Rouen was the subject, including one by Money of the city's stunning cathedral.

probably our mistake, that we expected more based on the reviews here. but if you are not totally into the religious art of the middle-age and other pre-modern painting, then this museum is nothing for you. the 19th and 20th century do not eixist here... Rouen lives in its past, at least when it comes to this museum.

We didn't get there until 5:15 pm after wandering around the city lost. Too bad, as it closed at 6 pm. I dashed from one room to another looking for the Impressionists, asking each guide "ou et la salle du Monet"? As this is a free museum with lots of French art over many centuries (and no crowds), well worth including this in your planning for visiting the city.

Free art museum! Many masters present and no crowds. One of the only things open on Monday. Gorgeous and well worth an hour or so. I would have loved an audio guide or even a map/pamphlet- but nothing like that was available

We came (again) to go round the impressive collection of Impressionist paintings, that a coal baron managed to put together in the 19th c before Impressionism became fashionable. Loads of Monet, Pissaro, Sisley, and a host of others we had never heard of but also very attractive.
We also went around part of a collection of local artists, which we intend to continue next vist!

Having worked at an art museum and visited them throughout the world, perhaps my expectation were too high but, really, could they at least have the old and unreadable wall texts redone so you know what you're seeing.
The poor place looked sad and depressing. Old fashioned wall colors, horrible lighting and signage and, given the Calder sculpture outside, there were very little 20th century works.
But, if you're into religious works, then you'll enjoy it...if you can see them as the lighting isn't good. There were some nice Impression-era works however with decent lighting.
Sorry to be so negative but I just can't recommend this museum.

Wow - this place would grace any capital not to mind a regional French city.
Has a huge range of art from about 15th century to 20th with paintings from well know names such as Velázquez, Carravaggio, Monet etc.
And its free to everyone!!!!

It has a sizeable permanent collection spread across two large floors. An extensive range from medieval through to twentieth century. The obvious highlights were the two caravaggios and the collection of impressionist art. Apart from Pissarro, Monet and Sisley there were some stand out works from the lesser known impressionist artists. It is an overall extensive collection that needs up to a couple of hours to do justice to.

A beautiful building and staffed by friendly and helpful people. The paintings were well exhibited and I was especially stunned by the impressionist rooms - one section almost appeared that the paintings were back-lit! Anyone who has never quite grasped the importance of light to Impressionism would certainly “get it” from visiting this gallery.

We visited the museum twice to take in the surprisingly extensive collection. We especially liked the works by Caravaggio, Delacroix, Renoir and of course Monet. It is located in an impressive building, renovated a few years ago, near several other museums.
