modern times did not come here yet
Jul 2020
probably our mistake, that we expected more based on the reviews here. but if you are not totally into the religious art of the middle-age and other pre-modern painting, then this museum is nothing for you. the 19th and 20th century do not eixist here... Rouen lives in its past, at least when it comes to this museum.

An Amazing Free Museum
Aug 2019
I spent a very enjoyable hour-plus inside the excellent Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen and highly recommend it as a change of pace from the more well-known tourist sights in the town core. If you have already visited the cathedral, this is your chance to view an actual Monet painting of that famous church, as well as some Renoirs and other impressionists.

There are a healthy number of French painters, of course, but also some thought-provoking modern art and some impressive mixed-media pieces that provide some welcome relief from the rooms filled with canvases. And best of all: the place is free!

Nice way to spend a rainy afternoon!
Mar 2020
I wanted to visit to see the Monet painting of the cathedral, but was pleasantly surprised at how nice the art collection was in this museum. We had a less than perfect weather day and this was a great way to spend an hour or two in the afternoon to wait out the rain storm. They did have a temporary exhibit on British modern artists that were sprinkled amongst the other art pieces, and that was a bit odd. Otherwise, it was very nice.

Impressive collection

Some great paintings and pieces of art displayed in a wonderful setting. I also appreciate the fact that the permanent exhibitions are free to visit.

The only reason for not giving 5 stars is that there is a lack of information in English or other languages. I believe there is an audio guide, but it is 2020 some multiple language painting captions would not be hard to introduce

Another great Museum
Oct 2019
What a wonderful museum. There never seems to be enough time to really enjoy and let the pieces fill your soul. But wait, did I see a Caravaggio? Yes What a great surprise as he is one of my favorites.

A bit disappointing
Oct 2019
I had understood this museum to be a stand-out in France but I didn't find that to be that true. It did have a nice Impressionist collection as well as art from throughout the centuries but I was a bit disappointed. The permanent collection is free which is nice and the building is beautiful.

Boring collection

Not a great collection, unless you like rooms and rooms of religious art. Terrible graphics. You almost need a magnifying glass to read. 20th century collection rooms are closed, with no explanation.

Superb museum
Sep 2019
The Musee des Beaux-Arts at Rouen is one of the best provincial museums in France, so if you are in Rouen on a rainy day like I was (or even if it isn't raining!), I highly recommend setting aside a couple of hours for a visit.

The Cathedral Notre-Dame in Rouen was a recurring subject for Monet when he lived in nearby Giverny, and this excellent museum displays one of these canvases, along with works by Gericault, Boudin, Sisley, Renoir, Caillebot, Delecroix and many others. The paintings collection is especially strong, but there are also many fine sculptures and objets d'art.

The whole museum has a very modern and professional air.

And it's free! Unbelievable for a museum of this quality.

Free museum. Includes a few paintings by Monet, Sisley, Renoir, Caillebot and Delecroix to name a few. This is a small museum housing paintings from a variety of different periods. It is worth checking out if you like art. There is also a-room of Joan of Arc paintings. Ask for the plan of the museum at the reception area to help you get around.

Great museum all to yourselves
Sep 2019 • Couples
There were hardly any people in the museum today. It’s a good quality museum, lots of good art and the second largest collection of impressionist art in France. We enjoyed it very much. And it’s free to boot.
