Description:

The first thing you notice about the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux-MuMa...

The first thing you notice about the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux-MuMa Le Havre is its breathtaking coastal setting. As you approach the spacious, light-filled museum building, Henri-Georges Adam's monumental concrete sculpture The Signal heightens the experience, framing a slice of the maritime landscape that inspired many of the works in the museum's collections. Le Havre has nurtured artists like Monet, Dubuffet, Friesz, Dufy and Braque. And MuMa is a pillar of the city's art history. Inaugurated in 1961 by André Malraux, then France's Minister of Cultural Affairs, MuMa is known for its late-19th and 20th-century collections. From the Impressionists to the Fauves, the museum's collections have been enriched by gifts such as works from the studio of Eugène Boudin and the Marande donation. More recently, Hélène Senn-Foulds donated an impressive collection built up by her grandfather, Olivier Senn, in the early 20th century. Thanks to the donation, MuMa's collection of Impressionist works is today one of France's largest, and the public can now enjoy works by Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas, Courbet and Corot.

I saw this collection when I was a child and it was housed in an indifferent space, but we went, as my art lecturer parents said it was the best collection of French Impressionist paintings outside Paris! Now it is in a magnificent space and is a joy to visit. Le Havre was pretty much flattened during World War 2... More

As said above. Good collection of impressionist paintings, worth seeing. Unfortunately, one of the exhibitions was only being set up, so we didn't get to see everything the museum had to offer.

We visited the Museum because it was pouring with rain and we like Art and photography. Some of the regular art display is well worth seeing and the special exhibition by the photographer Jaqueline Salmon sounded interesting. Sadly, we were frustrated by this because we could not really see what she was trying to achieve apart from experiment. The first... More

This is a super museum with amazing choice of artists. I think because this is a walk from the centre of town not many people go there which is a shame as it definitely well worth a visit.

Amazing tarte au citron in the café, good shop with arty educational toys for kids, that would make good presents. The paintings are fab of course. It's not all about eating and shopping! Raoul Dufy was born in Le Havre so they have quite a few of his paintings, and there is a huge collection of Boudin, since he lived... More

Excellent collection viewable up-close without crowds, without guards peering at you, we felt as if we were in someone's private home. Nominal admission, small gift shop, complimentary backpack check room. We walked there from the cruise port shuttle drop-off at the Volcano; delighted we ignored the ship's museum expert tell us "all the museums in LeHavre are closed on Mondays":... More

Enjoyed the experience. But only the paintings. The building and the halls are not fit to the brilliant pictures.

We were so surprised by this museum. We really did not expect to find a collection of this quality in Le Havre. Unfortunately we had just missed a Boudin exhibition but their permanent collection is wonderful. There is a whole wall of paintings of cows by Boudin, also some lovely, Renoirs, a gorgeous Matisse, Manet, Pisarro, Monet - it really... More

My experience of the gallery centred on the works of Boudin because there is a large exhibition on display at the time of my visit. Upstairs were fine things including an endless supply of Boudin cows but other superb things too. Worth a visit of a couple of hours or so.

We usually would not visit an art gallery on vacation but this one was amazing and we spent more time there then i would have thought. This place is incredible and they have done a great job with the displays.
