You can spend apleasant half an hour here but not much more. Quite a small museum, not a great deal to interest families. Lots of cafes and bars around this area.

If this is your first Honfleur museum, buy the Honfleur Museum Pass and go see the rest of them.
Marine Museums are so important, as most of our early civilization took place by the sea or rivers. Transport over land was much more difficult.
This is not the best marine museum I've ever enjoyed. But it may be the most "up close and personal". Don't touch, but you can FEEL the ship models, the oh-so-necessary documents, the diving suit, the carvings.
It's wonderful that all this history was not lost.
Exhibit labels are only in French, but you are presented with general information in English.

We spent a day in Honfleur recently and started with this museum on a Monday. When I asked the lady if I could buy a multi museum ticket, she said yes I could buy either a two museum ticket or a four museum ticket (the others being the Ethnographic, Satie and Boudin museums). She then told me that the Satie and Boudin museums were closed which I knew not to be the case.
We bought a ticket for the first two, neighbouring museums and started with the Ethnography one next door. When we returned she very apologetically admitted that the other two museums were indeed open!
The Marine museum is located in the oldest church in town - it had be desonsecrated. As such it was very small and only really of interest to people with maritime leanings. On its own it is also quite expensive and not worth it. Only go there if you are planning to visit the other ones as well.

This museum covers a remarkable span of history. It reveals the very important role played by King Henry VI in its development, and how it came to be associated with the
creation of French-speaking Canada. The models of ships are of varying quality.

Interesting, but small and only worth it if you by the combined museum ticket (recommend) so you can see all the city museums for one price.

Musee of 19 ieme siècle vessel models primarily. Wonderful old church with not much of value to view inside other than a decommissioned church.. In a historical maritime location such as this I expected very much more. Plan on about a ten minute visit.

Interesting but sadly mostly information is in French. I was able to understand some of the descriptions of items due to school French lessons. Would be useful to have other languages as it is an interesting little museum.

The Musee de la Marine is adjacent to the old harbour and for an extra 1,50 euro each you can also visit the old prison around the corner 'Manoir d' Ethnographie' a much more interesting museum. For this small maritime museum there is a fine selection of model galleons built with great attention to detail. Something that caught my eye were the 2 huge pulley blocks near the entrance which you can see quite clearly were hewn from tree trunks. Amazing. Add a selection of maritime paintings and assorted artifacts, all described in French, bye the way, and you sum up this museum.

For an extra E1.50, one can visit the prison (it has a street named after it). It is next to the museum and according to Annie, more interesting by far. It certainly shows the punishments prisoners underwent, but also life in general at the time; clothing, utensils, art, living conditions, etc. Because of the delicate nature of the original dresses, uniforms, etc. (yes ORIGINAL!), photography is forbidden (I really cannot understand why a seasoned photographer who disables his flash cannot take pics, but I guess they have to cater for the modern smart phones). Warning; if you are a tallish person, keep your head down! This place was built in the middle ages when people were much shorter. Remember LittleJohn (of Robin Hood fame) he was 6ft 1 inch. Most secondary school kids these days are that height...

If you are an adult, speak & above all read fluent french and are interested in a disjointed, almost random series of bits of port history in a tiny one time church, then this tired display is for you . You will gather that it was most definitively not for me - even if it did highlight the British beating the french !
