Strange and quirky - like the man himself
I sort of expected the museum to reflect the personality of Eric Satie and it did. It is an unusual experience and in its way quite refreshing as it is slightly off beat and all the better for that. You learn quite a bit about the man and his music as well as hearing plenty of it as you go around the museum. Not sure why but I was completely captivated by the automatic piano playing a series of pieces by him.

weird museum for a talented but weird guy
You need to know something of Satie besides his music to have any chance of understanding this museum. This is not a place to learn about him from the beginning. It also helps to know French. There is an English audio guide, but written explanations of exhibits are only in French. You won’t get the full experience otherwise. The museum fits the man’s personality. Or the myth of the man. It will be interesting if you are a fan. If not, you’ll be scratching your head. The player piano was spooky. That was my favorite part.

    Far out indeed
This museum is very strange, which suits the man it's an homage to! Before you go you should read a bit about Eric Satie and his time. Besides you might profit from a couple of audio excerpts of his works. Don't go in without an audio guide or you'll be lost in space. There are a couple of exhibits which you can touch and work, such as a merry-go-round that you can mount and which you have to power yourself like a bicycle. If you do that you'l see Satie's unplayable instruments such as the dictionary accordion. Take enough time to imbibe the atmosphere. Best to visit in bad weather as many rooms are dark anyway.

“The Satie House and Museum (Maisons Saties) is dedicated to composer and musician Erik Satie. Born in 1866 in Honfleur, this genius worked with such great names as Picasso or Braque, and inspired artists like Debussy and Ravel. During the visit, you will walk through the different rooms with an audioguide which will be triggered according to the room where you are. It’s really immersive!”

The triggers were difficult to manage. The slightest move and it would restart again. You had to be extremely still.

I loved the interactive piece that you could participate in.

It’s an interesting museum to say the least but I am a bit bummed I didn’t get to enjoy the whole audioguide triggers to its fullest.

Not sure what we were expecting, but it sure wasn't this! Super fun and interesting, but if you are looking for a retrospective of Satie's musical development, this ain't it. What this is instead is a multi-media fantasm of Satie's artistic spirit. Fantastic!

Was in Honfleur a few years ago and visited the Erik Satie House - absolutely loved it. We are returning to Honfleur next month and we are so looking forward to returning. A real gem and intriguing. Loved Satie's music and love this House.
Thank you.

This place left me speechless (almost!) This musuem is truly incredible and a testament to the nature of Satie. It's whimsical, fun, interactive and informative. Part fun house, part music museum. A feast for all the senses. I back tracked and went thru it twice! It's pretty indescribable. Something you really need to experience. I was familiar with Satie as a composer but did not know his other talents and no idea what to expect from the museum. He was quite the odd character. The 'flying pear', cafe, white room and 'carousel' are my favorites. The visuals and the audio guide that 'trips' sensors to tell his story are genius. The eavesdropping element to the guide is addictive. You want to hear more!

Is it performance art? Is it theatre? It's certainly no usual museum but a truly special experience we shall treasure for a long time. The music is sublime and the visuals ravishing. Surreal

Gloriously whacky, inventive and fun. I had no real interest in Satie prior to visiting the house whilst holidaying in Honfluer, just knew a few of his piano compositions. This brilliant 'museum' not only revealed much about the inner and outer worlds of Satie and his set, but sets a gold standard for an entertaining, creative and ultimately memorable 'museum' experience.

I like Satie's music, I understand that he was an eccentric and I wasn't expecting a typical museum experience. Bearing that in mind, I still didn't find that a visit to the Satie House offered very much.

The way the tour worked is that they gave you an audio guide. You then followed a path through a series of themed rooms each dealing with some aspect of Satie's life, music or philosophy. As you moved from room to room or sometimes even within rooms the audio guide would sense where you were and provide information specific to that location. The technology was more interesting than the information. There wasn't that much of it, and it wasn't particularly coherent. Some of that may have been due to the nature of the technology, some to a preference of style over substance and some to the fact that maybe I just didn't get it.

Whatever the case, it wasn't a particularly satisfying experience. If it hadn't been included as part of museum pass, I would have been disappointed in having paid 12 Euros for a visit.

Never heard of Erik Satie before deciding to visit but this was one of our favorite stops in France. The infrared headsets are sensitive but it was neat to walk around rooms to find the various 'hot' spots. Sort of performance art but in-doors. Oldest son is learning French and the staff was most accomodating in helping him translate for us.

Satie's former home is now transformed into a visitor attraction which seeks to unlock his mind for the uninitiated visitor. It's immersive, surreal and deeply experiential - cabinets of dry and dusty exhibits banished in favour of flying kinetic fruit, pedal-powered mushroom sculptures, talking mechanised chimpanzees. I knew Satie's music but not the person, but this place absolutely captures the imagination, and does a great job of making him real. We brought two teenagers with no particular interest in classical music...it enthralled them as well. If you find yourself in Honfleur, do buy the ticket and take the ride...

Even if you've never heard of Erik Satie, you'll have definitely have heard his music (in particular his 3 Gymnopedie piano compositions), and this gem of a tiny museum captures his life and music through installations, sound, light, music and truly surreal museum pieces.
The museum is experienced via headphones that activate each installation and commentary (in various languages - ours was English) with the result that you get an incredibly personable insight into this eccentric, innovative composer.
An immersive experience that will delight people of all ages, and certainly made our day in this lovely Normandy harbour town. And for less than 5 Euros. Upgrade to a museum pass for 7 Euros and you get to go into other museums in the town.
Children will love it.
