- gerdom59Paris, France96,471 contributionsBuilt with wood from the Touques forestPlace Sainte Catherine in Honfleur (14), this church built in the 15th century, the largest in France in wood, is the work of the inhabitants. For construction, they used wood from the Touques forest. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1879. A superb visit.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 12, 2024
- luciussilvaeVilvoorde, Belgium5,414 contributionsUnique must see in Honfleur.Ever seen a completely wooden church? This is your chance. Moreover, the church was built by shipbuilders in the half of the 15th century who were used to working with this material. The church even has a bell tower and the same dimensions as a stone church. A real gem, even the apparently slate tiles seem to be made of wood on closer inspection. The church rests on a number of gigantic wooden pillars, all in one piece, which reminds you of the gigantic trees that preceded this church. Mighty and unique, I saw one before in Tromsø in Norway above the Arctic Circle. This is a real must see, because you rarely get an opportunity like this. In principle, anyone can work wood quite easily, but such a structure is of a different order.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- gersfeldNew York City, New York78 contributionsHonfleur is worth a visitWas in Honfleur during inclement weather which was not ideal but helped with the number of tourists you’d otherwise encounter. It’s a lovely, quiet, atmospheric town worth exploring especially if you wander away from the tourist hub. At night the streets are almost completely empty and the architecture is just incredible. The Boudin Museum is worth an hour or so but I mainly enjoyed wandering around.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 4, 2024
- Brendan SArlington, Virginia2,175 contributionsUnique French cathedralThis church is unlike the soaring gothic cathedrals that seem to be ubiquitous in France. Rather, it’s an all-wooden church with a ceiling evoking a ship’s hull, consistent with Honfleur’s nautical focus. It’s not a very big church and there’s not a lot to see here, but it’s worth checking out for that feature.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 29, 2024
- KINE64Lens, France6 contributionsA wonderful, relaxing place, a masterpiece! Do not missA magnificent church in the town of Honfleur. The nave is entirely built of wood by marine carpenters and will make you dream of having the impression of having a wooden boat hull on your head. It would be a shame to visit Honfleur without seeing this listed historic monumentVisited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 10, 2024
- NomadeMarseille, France615 contributionsNot to be missed 🤩🤩🤩A historical nugget: a church built in the second half of the 15th century (left nave) all made of wood with the shape of an overturned boat hull. The bell tower is built at a good distance from the wood to avoid fire in case of lightning. The right nave in Gothic style dates from the 16th century. The porch dates from the early 20th century. It is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 10, 2024
- alessandra_biondi3Ferrara, Italy30,639 contributionsWooden church with doubled interiorChurch built to replace the previous burned during the Hundred Years' War (against the British). Built by the axe masters (around the place there were huge forests), its peculiarity lies in the duplicity, it has two altars and two twin naves, the bell tower is detached. Inside, the patron saint of Normandy is venerated and the devotion to St. Teresa of Lisieux is also deeply felt. Surely the church is worth a visit.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 16, 2024
- markusdue2018Hilden, Germany150 contributionsDefinitely worth seeingActually, a must on a visit from Honfleur. This beautiful old wooden church. Impressive that the church tower is opposite. With us was just market when we were there therefore the subject for photographing was somewhat limited. So make a detour from the port to this churchVisited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 11, 2024
- Teacher91 ❤Temple, Texas49,581 contributionsJaw Dropping Beauty InsideWhen the Mr. and I visit Europe, it's a given that I want to see the churches. We recently stopped in Honfleur on our way to Rouen. While enjoying a walk around the old town, we stepped into Saint Catherine's Church. I literally gasped when I saw the gorgeous interior. I've seen some beautiful churches over the years, but this one is definitely one of my all time favorites.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 25, 2024
- leboralLille, France1,277 contributionsRareDedicated to sailors, this church is a rare example of architecture that has spanned the centuries. Admission is free. The interior is splendid and original with the double nave-shaped roof and the bell tower separate from the main building.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten October 28, 2024

A really beautiful building, both inside and out. The separate bell tower seems very unusual, a northern European campanile with a clock with a wooden face.
The half timbered structure has a long house feel, and the interior looks like the inside of a boat with a hull-like roof and wooden columns. Some lovely carving on gallery, columns and the southern doors. A wonderful escape from the crowds and tourist shops of Honfleur.

Saint Catherine’s Church was built entirely in wood, gathered in the nearby forest. This 15th-century cathedral is the oldest surviving wooden church in France and the largest with a separate bell tower. FREE ENTRY The church is famous for its original shape: its roof is formed by the double hull of an inverted ship.

This town retains a large proportion of its medieval architecture which is really quite amazing. The tall, 5 storey, thin buildings arranged higgeledy piggledy round the harbour present a façade I’ve not seen before. It’s a unique place.
There are lots of tourists shops to browse, cafes to sample and make sure you visit the wooden church in the town centre.

A nice wooden church tucked away up a side street in busy Honfleur. Not easy to get good photos with so many folk about, delivery vans etc.
Recommend downloading an offline street map to make it easier to find.

A church built as two naves is a rare and very spectacular sight,
It is definitely worth a detour. So beautiful with the two identical church rooms. The tower was built a short distance from the church due to the risk of fire

Worth a visit, the entire framework and walls are made of wood, 2 altars including one for sailors. This place invites reflection and calms. In addition there is the market on the square at the exit in the city center.

The church dates from the second half of the fifteenth century and was built by the inhabitants of the city after the departure of the British. They used wood as a building material and combined it with their knowledge of shipbuilding. It is the largest church in France built of wood by shipbuilders with a separate bell tower.
Especially because it is an entirely wooden church, this church exudes its own unique atmosphere. You must see this church when you are in Honfleur.

The beautiful Norman port town of Honfleur boasts the largest wooden church in France! A unique building where you can feel the seafaring past! It even smells a little like decayed wood in the interior, it is very worth a visit!

Cute Honflour is also a wooden church. It’s the largest wooden church in France, and a dazzling church with 500 years of history
The whole church is built with trees brought from the surrounding jungle. This gave the church a unique warmth and a natural view.

Incredible travel back in time. Amazing wooden church, in the middle of a small plaza, really speaking about old times. To be visited inside and admired from outside. You will understand why it is considered the most famous place in Honfleur.

Is there s flea market here or anywhere in and around Le Havre ?
Sunday ?
Written December 10, 2016
Not knowing when you are going I would say "possibly".
The easiest method of locating is via search engines le Harve tourist information office".
If you are there and want to while away a damp Sunday afternoon - try going to the Muma museum of modern art on boulevard Clemenceau - opposite the lighthouses on the river seine in LH closed on tuesday. Check website. For entrance fee and opening hours. A good place to see a very much rated contemporary of Turner Sisley.
Be aware that we had a very expensive coffee in the new shopping centre in the warehouses. Far cheaper to eat with the French in LH centre. Going north west up the coast you will meet LH plague (seaside) Again the euro does not stretch too much.
Last visit here was in the really hot period at the end of August. 111oF in the shade.
Have fun, take care and enjoy.
Off to Madeira in a few weeks time. :-)
