Inside this cathedral contains a number of side chapels, the ones behind the altar being the most interesting. It’s a pity that a lot of the original statues and stained glass have been removed so most of what remains is much later. The cathedral could do with a clean, as the ceiling is stained from centuries of candle-smoke. Worth a visit, particularly if you’re following St Theresa through the town. ALso a nice square outside, and free parking (if you’re lucky enough to get a space)

Church where St. Therese and her family went during their time. Her parents are now saints and her siblings also became nuns. Beautiful chapels, history and prayers. Walk the footsteps of St. Therese!

The Cathedral of St Peter is one of the must-see places while on a pilgrimage to Lisieux, albeit this applies to all devotees of St Therese, the Little Flower. This was the parish church (and it is still) where St Therese attended weekday as well as Sunday Mass prior to her entry to Lisieux's Carmelite convent.

Visitors may start from the left side of the front entrance (though I entered from the front right side door), where one can pick up a leaflet that highlights the 'spots' to visit in this ancient cathedral. For those who forgot to bring their reading glasses, you cannot miss the same information conveniently posted on a big display board with spotlights.

The highlighted spots to visit include the confessional where St Therese made her first confession, the chapel where she prayed for Pranzini a public criminal of her time, her family's private chapel where she prayed for her vocation, the high altar donated by St Therese's father, Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel where St Therese's sister prayed for her vocation and Chapel with the Holy Face where St Therese often prayed in contemplation. At the family's chapel where St Therese received her vocation, there is a logbook that you may wish to drop a message of thanksgiving or of petition.

Overall, the cathedral is an indispensable place to start/or complete a Theresian pilgrimage in Lisieux. Contrary to the magnificent basilica that was built after St Therese's canonization, every spot in this ancient catheral reflects the presence of the great saint; for it was in this very church that the workings of the Holy Spirit began in her soul.

What was really amazing about Cathedral Saint Pierre was that it was built between the 12th and 13th century and has a tie to St. Joan of Arc. It is stark, cold, huge inside, high gothic cathedral ceilings, alters along the side and in the back. The Martin family had their own alter where they gathered for services (not sure why, never heard of this), and relatively speaking the Cathedral is not too far from where they lived. I found the paintings over the side alters beautiful. One could look at them and note just religious art. The story they told me was of a faith that has been handed down through the centuries.

We literally stumbled upon the Cathedral, not knowing its history or wealth inside. It is one of the most unique churches I've ever visited.

I've visited this cathedral many times and still find it awe inspiring. I especially like the chapel built by Bishop Couchon in reparation for having Joan of Arc put to death. Thomas Becket was Bishop here for a while (several relics of his are displayed in the nearby hospital chapel bizarrely!) and some say that Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine here too - although some say it was elsewhere.
The architecture is stunning, and there are some beautiful examples of religious art, including a crucifix of about 15ft in length carved out of a single piece of timber.
Inspite of it's size, this cathedral provides a peaceful place for contemplation for tourists and is definitely a must see if you're passing through Lisieux.

The gothic architecture, the many chapels, and the informative guides to the history of the Church and its religious significance all make this a very worthwhile place to visit in Lisieux.

We called at Lisieux on our way back to Calaais.

Magnificent cathedral from the outside. And inside was fabulous too.

The photographic exhibition on the life of St Therese, in English as well as French, filled both sides of the building. Very interesting and compelling. Excellent use of text and photographs
